Musical Recommendations Thread

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:29 am

Hi guys, this thread is basically just for you to share your musical interests and post the names of bands that you like, recommend what you like to other people that have the same taste as you or if you forgot the name of a song or band but know some of the lyrics to the song come here and I'm sure someone can help you out.

I'll start off, I listen to a wide variety of genres but mostly listen to the heavier stuff like Metalcore and Deathcore which involves bands such as: Motionless in White, Woe is Me, Memphis May Fire, Chelsea Grin, Whitechapel etc. But I also listen to the classics and some post-hardcoe like The Beatles, Queen, Frank Sinatra and for the post-hardcoe stuff; Deaf Havana. So if you happen to like Metal/Deathcore (which I doubt many people here do) jazz or post-hardcoe feel free to check those out.

Now that you've got the basic idea of how this thread works, START POSTING!

You might like these hardcoe albums (you should, they're genius)

http://www.allmusic.com/album/miss-machine-r700276
http://www.allmusic.com/album/alaska-r790705
http://www.allmusic.com/album/petitioning-the-empty-sky-r340051
http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-shape-of-punk-to-come-r378774

In some ways, they are more aggressive and complex (and well, better) than the bands you mentioned, and they paved the way for the entire genre.

For the most part, they are much more aggressive and complex than the bands you mentioned, but they paved the way for those bands.

I love every single one of these bands, and you were correct in saying that they are more complex, but only for some of the bands. Both Chelsea Grin and Whitechapel have very, very complex songs that will test your limits with guitar, if you haven't been playing for a while already. But anyways thanks for the suggestions guys, keep em' coming.

I forgot to post some links :P

Whitechapel is a great band as in they are all great at their instruments but the vocalist is too.... too one dimensional (Too much done in lows) (and virtually un-interpretable) most of the time IMO

Edit : I guess this is for suggestion so I may as well suggest again

I prefer my harsh metal vocals have variety like this

I completely agree with you with the vocal's, I wish that he would at least try to go higher.

Yeah and the worst part is that he actually can but doesn't... cause he does do it a little bit in at least "This is exile" but overall from what I've heard out of the band he goes low like 99% of the time

I mostly listen to two types of music.

One I'll call 'clank' because that's what someone else called it and it fits, but up until then I just called it "experimental electro indie" - it overlaps somewhat with math-rock and art-rock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkgQ88G8Hj8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uomm1uli7OM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ1LI-NTa2s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iIfkBztfow

The other lot, which does not have a genre-type name, uses huge, bombastic orchestral arrangements. I spend most of time listening to these latter bands, who only fit together because they don't fit anywhere else.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbe33jNTKz4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTD-SxLKqTQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=028KfrPNpPs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vP1r1DCz6w

I'd certainly recommend all of these acts to any music fans, though I note they are "acquired tastes" and probably a little hard on the ears of any Coldplay fans out there. All of it could broadly be described as "psychedelic".

Here's some good music I've been listening to lately, not hard at all really but somebody here will most likely enjoy them. Everything I link to I highly recommend

This is a really sad song by a fairly well-known band called Eels, the whole album is amazing. Eels is an alternative/acoustic indie rock band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3S3QSNOE88

This next song is by one member of the band Animal Collective, an experimental group. This whole album is also highly recommended (album is called Down There).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz2VGEQ4x-Y

This next song is by Strand of Oaks, really beautiful album. Genre is folk I believe. This whole album is also absolutely amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQzDW1IdgQ8

This next song is by a gem of a band called Snowmine, I can't understand how they're not more known already. Genre is indie/psychedelic, or at least that's what I've been told. Album is called Laminate Pet Animal, the whole thing is amazing, free download on their bandcamp page. http://snowmine.bandcamp.com/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIqqcjMzavM

This next album is also pretty well known. By an alternative/post-punk (or something) band called The Replacements.

And I'd link what I else I listen to, but I'd either get flamed for too much pony in a non-pony thread, or I'd get banned for forum-inappropriate content.

Albums I've been really into the past few days:

http://www.allmusic.com/album/since-i-left-you-r522636 (see Cowboy run-with-wolves's video in post http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1251814-musical-recommendations-thread/page__p__19072253#entry19072253, it's all you need to know)
http://www.allmusic.com/album/within-the-realm-of-a-dying-sun-r5242 (beautiful dark atmospheric world music)
http://www.allmusic.com/album/what-sound-r645296 (sort of triphop, sort of electronica, I'm not good with these sorts of genres, but it's awesome)

Oh yeah, and a new artist I found is Daedelus. He's sort of like The Avalanches, but less hip-hop oriented. Only album I've heard so far is http://www.allmusic.com/album/denies-the-days-demise-r832442, but it's great.

Oklaaaahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain!

Actually, I can't stand that movie. But I adore Fiddler on the Roof. ^_^

Wait, we were supposed to recommend musicals, right?

I would highly re-recommend any of these bands. They're so much fun! Especially tUnE-yArDs :)

Also, for people who like metal: Here's some classic death metal by the band that essentially created the genre, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRyl_p1z9Nw
