I must turn into Hercules!

And for discussion, what is the most painful thing both psychically and mentally that you have had to overcome?

Getting into running shape when I joined the Navy actually. :P

I started out not even being able to pull a 4th of a mile without throwing up, but I just worked on it for about a month or two and got to the point where I can run a mile and a half in about 11:30. Not an amazing time, but it's not exactly bad either. It's average I like to think.

What I started out doing was a little program laid out in a book the recruiter gave me. It had me starting out running for 1 minute, and then walking for 3 minutes, then running for 1 minute, then walking for 3 minutes. I did this until I had moved a mile and a half. I'd do this every other day for a week, then the next week it would be 2 minutes running 2 minutes walking, then the next week 3 minutes running 1 minute walking.

I ended up doing the 3 minute run 1 minute walk forever because I was lazy, but eventually I got to where I'd do a 6 minute run, walk for 4 minutes, then run for 6 minutes if I could and walk the rest of the way. The goal was 20 minutes total I think, then I got to 10 minutes solid running, and then I shipped out before I was really able to run the mile and a half in the time I needed to run it.

Boot camp had me running for like 45 minutes straight some days, which I still believe was some superhuman thing I'll never ever ever do again, but I was able to actually run or at least jog the entire time so I guess my two months of preparing did me well enough. :P

I used to be really fit, in cardio terms, I never really 'ran' distance or jogged every day, I just played a lot of sport.

During a 90 or even 60 minute football (soccer) match it's amazing how much and how far you run.
Over time, including training and games, you really build up your stamina.
Without purposefully training, I found myself running for much longer than I thought I could, doing well in athletics in school and nearly winning the cross-country.
Now though, i've let my sporting life diminish in favour of education, I focus on sprinting, it's much easier and I can use strength rather than endurance.
Though I do hope to reinvigorate my fitness at University.

Regardless, I think it's a great way to subliminally train, by doing something you enjoy for cardio exercise, such as a sport, it takes your brain off the actual running, yet you still get the exercise you need.

Best of luck.

This isn't the only thing. We do something called 30/60s or 60/120. Run as fast as possible for 60 seconds, walk the next 120, then sprint again 60 seconds, and then walk 120. Doing these helped me on my distance and breathing.

I had to do exercises like those, except we didn't walk, we jogged. I hated doing those, even though I could run 10 miles. Guess my fast-twitch muscles were lacking.

Yea, they helped me improving my breathing and distance. It wasn't a casual walk during the 120 seconds.

That's just how I get into the house and get to the mailbox, since I lsot my keys a few months ago.

And im not really sure.. I just feel like I need to get into some decent shape.

You have to make yourself more clear. Do you just want to have healthy lungs and such with he addition of lower body fat or do you want some muscle?

Either way, I'm sure this is a great way to start

I ran 2 miles yesterday on a treadmill. Split the two miles up with a mile of walking up an incline. Was completely fine afterward. Then I ran outside for a quarter mile and almost died. The climate is really cold. I can run inside just fine but once the temperature goes down I can't run at all.

What exactly are you training for?

I've heard the Thieves Guild is recruiting again.

Breathe through your nose and out through your mouth.
Zeronetgain also made an excellent point.
If I were you, I would have a physical done at the doctor's office to rule out asthma, or other medical issues, then consult the track or cross country coach for excersises and warm ups that can help you achieve your goal.
