Mythbusters

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 3:07 am

A discussion of episodes new and long past!

Tonight:
Special, Men vs. Women in all manner of mythological "guys/gals can do it better!" Myths.
Driving
Cooking
Grilling
among several others that I couldn't pick out from the teaser.

Any thoughts? Predictions?
This one should be interesting.

My ideas are that they bust almost all of the "wo/men are better" myths. There's nothing that would make a man or woman inherently better at anything in particular, just by virtue of being male or female.

Sure, some individuals will certainly be better than others, but I don't think gender will have anything to do with very much tonight.

Men win them all. Except anything with eyesight and color.

Actually, now that I think about it, I bet men are going to be all cocky-as-hell that they win the driving comparison.

Only to find that women wipe the pavement with them. Haha, that would be ideal.

For driving, grilling, and cooking (the "distinction" between these last two is incredibly hilarious IMO) I doubt any difference exists. That said, there are natural characteristics that do cause a statistical favoring for either men or women in specific tasks. Add to that the societal feedback and even more tasks can be added to the categories. So it is true that with certain things an average man or woman will do better then the other.

It's actually "myths" like these I dislike when Mythbusters does them, because the one major flaw in mythbusters is their limited scope in testing. For many myths it doesn't matter, like when testing a good many hollywood myths, but for myths that have a statistical aspect, mythbusters has a horrible sample size most of the time.

I'm sure that on 'technical things' like cooking and driving, both genders will be equal, but once you get into the more physical stuff, men will come on top.

You are absolutely right. I remember the "Beer Goggles" episode was exactly like this. They even said "we need a large sample size," and so they used three whole people.

I was embarrassed for them. But it's ok, their ideas are really there as just a proof of concept. If it's possible at all, or not possible at all, then they've done their job. I don't think they really intend to profile society statistically.

Haha. Gotta keep a clean mind when reading this quote.

I think the "men do it better" thing came from the fact that we used to be more of a patriarchal society.

I doubt that episode will produce anything much valid. They did a men vs woman pain thing a while ago and they had a sample size of about 5 guys and 5 girls... Hardly what is needed if they were serious about pursuing the topic.

I'll catch an episode every now and then, skipped many seasons and caught the desert island duct tape episode where Adam and Jaimie had to survive on an island using nothing but duct tape... frankly I think there may be merit to what you said about it becoming a game show.

They did the duct tape island, and they are doing the Men v. Women, but they also did Square Wheels and Swinging Pirates. So, while I have to admit that they are not doing as much exploding and shooting as they used to, I do still think they are sticking with their old formula for at least some of the episodes.

It's been going that way for a while, tbh. Can't really blame them; you can only look at so many urban legends before you start running out of things to test. Some of the new ones are still enjoyable though, like the duct tape island one.

Indeed, there's some people I know that take this show for something more than just entertainment.. rather sad.

And I used to believe I think wrong.
Oh and the show will be PC, everyone's as good as everyone else blah blah blah regardless of whether the man or the woman is better at the particular task they have to keep our fragile little egos intact. Seen it happen a million times in a million different situations, one that stuck out in particular was Fight BS Science, when they wanted to determine if men or women punched harder. That show is normally hilariously stupid and inaccurate but this episode just topped it. Oh and the whole load of [censored] is completely useless BTW.

The episode was a complete waste of time. I mean really. If you get ten individual men, and ten individual women, and those ten men drive better, than that just means that those men are better drivers, not all men, obviously. Sometimes I wonder how inaccurate mythbusters can get before the entire show just explodes.

It's entertainment, it's not, and never was intended to be science. It's just experimenting with physics. And explosives :hehe:

I know.... if they really do wanna make it entertaining, they should get rid of Kari, Tory, and Grant so it's just Adam and Jamie.... I cannot stand those three, they constantly try to be funny and fail completely

Whaaat? I love the build team. I do like Adam and Jamie, but Kari, Tory, and Grant are certainly worth watching. Sometimes they do better work than the two Mythbusters do.
