Natural Growth - Let your Hero find his way

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 11:04 am

Hey everyone,

glad you made it here

So in this topic i want to discuss a certain playstyle that i have found to be very entertaining and immersive.
Basicly you let your Hero grow the way he would naturaly do and don't bend him in any way, shape or form.

To give a better Impression of what i'm talking about here are a few examples:

1. If you find a skillbook, read it even if the point you gain doesn't fit your style
2. Act as you would do if your character were you, don't be afraid to use a bow to attack from distance and switch to a 1H/2H weapon when if he gets too close even if doesnt fit you!
3. Put perk into trees in which your hero excels in this way, let it look as if he learnt it and don't force growth

The point is, try to create a hero and don't plan nothing.Nothing at all.
He shall grow and get better at things he would when trying to survive and suceed in his mission.

There are a few problems with that playstyle though:

1. You will level very uncontroled and fast, consider to adapt the difficulty.
2. You will need more perks to simulate this growth. I personaly am using the Enhanced Perk plugin for Scriptdragon (has yet to be updated for 1.4.2). I set it up to 2 point/lvl.

I used to plan everything in advance to not waste even the slightest effort, but since i was introduced to this playstyle i don't want to go back anymore.
I find it amazingly interesting and immersive to play that way. It just feels right.

So any opinions/critism on that?
Do you want to try it?
Are you allready doing it?
What are your experiences with it?

Let me know please, i'm very interested.

Thanks

One big problem:

You're always an influence on your character, always.

This is how I tend to play. Let the character itself choose the way. Kind of :)

Hmmm sounds interesting but that's kind of how I started with my first char. I just picked up a pair of axes and, well, never put them down again.

Influence is neither a bad thing nor is it forbidde, it makey your charcter unique in the end.
Key is that you don't plan!

I've been doing this since Morrowind. I don't plan any of my characters. Of course, by mid "level" they just kind of settle on certain things. Like currently, my Nord Adelaide in Skyrim is a Thief, Assassin and uses a bow quite effectively for everything. But he does use 1H swords in close quarters and an occasional dagger. He also uses a 2H sword when he feels like. He also likes destruction magic (but I don't really put any points into it.) He reads every book he picks up too.

Exactly, it works for me since fallout 3.

In morrowind and oblivion I ruined lots of characters because I planned them and I couldn't follow the line.
