I need an advice about light

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:46 am

Hi. I have passed a few weeks on Oblivion and is just restarting playing Skyrim. It's all fine but what's embarrassing me is the lack of light. I use candle light (it's the same as mage light: 5 for 60 secs) but it's not enough for me, after playing Oblivion with full light. With candle light I could hardly see the dead hags to loot in a dark dungeon.

What are you using (I don't like torches) or casting?

Thanks to you in advance:-)

Besides torches, magelight spells and cranking up the brightness, I'm not aware of anything else you can do.

Usually I can still see decently enough to get around in dungeons without light. I especially love it because I can sneak all that much more efficiently. If that's not enough, use both of the light spells to help you through. In a worst case scenario if not having light in dungeons bothers you that badly either make a Khajit, or become a vampire.

Follower, there're 3 thing they excel at. Meat Shield, Walking Chest and Torch holder (seriously, they only use 1 torch)

Why don't you just turn up the brightness in the display settings?

It's refreshing to see "there is too little light" post after seeing so many "there is too much light in dungeons" complaints in other posts.

Candlelight has always worked for me - invest the Alteration dual-casting perk to make it last longer :)

You might be right...

I thought of that. Just now I've tried flames but it doesn't work. All it does is putting fire to the whole place.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't sneak. I tried both mage light and candle light (together) but it doesn't change anything.

I could yes but my problem is only in dungeons that I feel quite blind haha. That's why I don't want to turn brightness up. :geek:

Of course darkness is better for thiefs and assassins but I'm not. I try to play good though it's not so easy

Excellent... I will follow your advice. I have checked and must admit that I was not aware of the result of Alteration Dual Casting Perk which says: Dual casting on Alteration spell overcharges the effects into an even more powerful version. So then it means, I suppose, that candlelight will bring more brightness... My next perk will be for that... Thanks :goodjob:

I like to zap my follower with Magelight, then he will carry a bulb of light around.

But to actually see something while playing with sunlight shining through the window next to the monitor, I really prefer to be a Khajiit or vampire.

I hate when I look at something bright like a torch, then I'm blind for a minute.

Use vision of the tenth eye or whatever that illusion ritual spell is called. Or be a Khajiit.

Aside from rolling Khajiit since they've Night Eye as a racial, or the aforementioned Candlelight/Magelight/torches, you can also become a Vampire. They have a minor power that's essentially exactly the same as a Khajiit's Night Eye except you don't have to be Khajiit obviously.

The fire breath shout creates a good amount of light. I used a realistic lighting mod and fire breath helped a lot. Try fighting a draugr in a totally pitch-black chamber and only seeing its glowing eyes.

The lack of night eye is one of several things I really miss from Oblivion. I didn't know about Vision of the Tenth Eye. Thanks for that. Don't know if it's worth all the illusion investment, though.

I suggest you develop a unicorn-like harness for Meko's head where you could put a torch in there to light the way.

I used Magelight until I found that Flames just strafed where I wanted to see worked really well for a quick look, and cost virtually nothing Magicka wise. Didn't have to switch out spells, either. It's probably not practical for complete darkness, but it works for me on an RP level too, since I like running around with my hand out shooting fire wherever I turn. :P

Other things I've used were Vision of the Tenth Eye and Vampire's Sight which also doesn't need me to switch out spells (just aren't enough hot keys in Skyrim).
