Need advice regarding trading in games

Post » Tue Nov 29, 2011 3:48 pm

So, I have a bunch of games I want to sell/trade-in, and right now Gamestop has a +50% trade-in credit for any used game. I'm not having luck trading these on Switchgames, and I only registered to Cheap Ass Gamer today. I'm also considering trading in games I like, such as God of War 1 & 2, Shadow of the Colossus, and ICO, because I know they are getting/have got HD collected editions for the PS3, which I intend to purchase at some point. I've played the GoW games at least 4 times each, and I have a lot of other games to keep me occupied until I get a PS3. Can you think of any reason I should hang on to the PS2 versions?

I know I could get more money if I tried selling on ebay or even if I waited for someone to buy it via Cheap Ass Gamer. But I'm sick of having these around taking up space, and the longer I wait, the lower the trade-in price will become. And the +50% trade in credit ends this Sunday, so I need to make a decision very soon.

Games:
Legend of Kay
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
WipeOut: Fusion
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
DnD: Tactics (for the PSP)
Sega Genesis Collection
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Devil May Cry
The Hobbit
Shadow of the Colossus
ICO
God of War 1
God of War 2

What would you do?

How much do you actually need the cash/store credit?

PS2 games will get you next to nothing when traded in. Unless you're absolutely confident that you'll never want to play these games again, I would keep them. I traded in Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 on PS2 a couple of year back and I really regret it.

This. Most of the games you have listed will be worth less than 2$ trade in value. Gamestops in Canada will flat out say, "We aren't taking this anymore."

They already do it on current gen titles, too.

Most the games on the list I don't really want. Or I played them for a while, and decided I did not like them, or I know I won't have time for them and I'd rather play other games.

I don't need the trade-in credit, per se... but something is better than nothing. I had success trading in some PSP. Wii, and Gamecube games last time, got a total of about $50 in trade-in credit.

I can also try to sell (for cash) to a local comic book shop that also buys video games, but the guy I called said I'd probably only get a dollar at most for the PSP and PS2 games, so I'm not really hopeful there. I suppose I could try listing these on Craigslist, but I've not had much luck selling any of my games on CL at all. I do have an ebay seller account, I could try selling the games there or on Half.com, but I don't like how they take a % of the profit, and all the nickle and diming ebay does for the listing.

I tried DnD tactics, absolutely can't stand it, I couldn't finish the tutorial. So boring.

I don't like Citizen Kabuto, Legend of Kay, Warrior Within, Wipeout. I don't really like Sly Cooper, and I don't have much attachment to Ecco. DMC - I tried it once, couldn't get into it. I could give it another shot, but I really do like God of War better.

Do it for games you have NO intention of ever putting back into the tray.

Less dust on the shelves.

I read over that list again. They are some awesome games.

If you're determined to get rid of them, bring them to Gamestop. Get a price.

I will give you that plus 50%, plus P&P, for all of them. I will pay through PayPal. I am completely serious.

That is good advice... but the only ones that I might want to play again are the four that have their own PS3 re-releases. I'm 99% sure I'll buy a PS3 at some point in the next year or two. That's why I was even considering selling Ico, SotC, and the GoW games - because I can get them again, and they'll be updated to HD and stuff, too! The money I get from trading in them could be put toward purchasing the PS3 collections when I have a PS3.

:ahhh:

Honestly, you'll get next to nothing for those games. I'd be surprised if you even got $40 for all of those.

first rule in trading games. game stores will turn them around and sell them for profit. so you always get the least desirable deal when trading with them to maximize their profit.

Don't trade SotC or ICO to GameStop. You could probably get at least $25 from ICO if you sold it online.

I would use Ebay anyway. Sure, there is more work involved and waiting too, but I think GameStop and similiar game chain stores just rip off their customers when it comes to used games. Even with special deals, which really aren't that special.

There is a GAME store here in town, and their used games are often more expensive than it would be to buy the game new from some other stores :meh:
