Need criticisms for a character build idea

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:20 pm

The only word I can use to describe this class idea is a sort of "reaper."

Race: Dunmer
Skills perked: Conjuration, Alteration, Restoration, Two Handed (considering others; see below)
Sign: Ritual Stone

So here's the gist: your basic necromancer who summons a battleaxe to fight alongside his zombies. Cast armor spell and Bound Battleaxe, jump into battle, raising dead along the way and, on occasion, using the Ritual Stone to amass a zombie army (see this video for a how-to, in case you're interested on raising a zombie army: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ3TfvFrnYY&feature=related).

I'm having several problems with this build.

-First of all, I've never used two handed weapons and magic in Skyrim. I loved doing that in Oblivion for battlemage builds, but having to switch back and forth (and recast my weapon) worries me. Has anyone ever used Two Handed and a magic skill, specifically the Bound Battleaxe supplemented by magic? I'd like to know if you folks think I should be using One Handed and the Bound Sword instead, that I may cast and slash.

-Secondly, I'm not sure what to do about being more than mortal. I really want this character to be a stage four vampire, as it suits the build for easy RP value (as well as gives me a powerful raise undead spell before I can get it via Conjuration), gives me 100% frost resistance while only being 50% weak to fire, makes people hostile to me, and is just generally fun. Problem is, I also am considering joining the companions for that battlemage feel, and it made me think of being a werewolf, which also sounds pretty awesome for this build.

-Finally, do you folks think I should invest in Enchanting? I can easily capture a bazillion souls since my main weapon will be a bound one, and perhaps capturing black souls has the right kind of evil feel. It would also help with attribute values, since I'll have to split between health, magicka and stamina, as well as the occasional +X% Two Handed damage and fire resistance. The only real problem is that it requires training and adding perks to another skill. Should I invest in Enchanting, or save myself the Conjuration perk and just buy enchanted equipment?

Help me out, please.

Notice: Any posts saying something something along the lines of "there are no classes in Skyrim/Skyrim did away with classes/etc." will be reported as spam/troll comments. I'm sure most of you are intelligent enough to discuss the topic for its own sake, but there's always someone who has to come around saying this nonsense as if Skyrim lacking the word "class" means that it's impossible to create and anolyze character builds.

Two handed and magic just doesn't work well. Especially if you're gonna wear robes and use Alteration. Your HP is gonna be low so you're gonna need to occasionaly recast flesh spells and regularly heal yourself. So you're gonna want to swing a conjured sword while healing with the off hand, remember you can use the concentration healing spell and swing a sword at the same time.

Experiment with conjured weapons before you decide, notice the long delay between casting and the weapon actually appearing. You'll hate it lol

Suggestion, don't use health potions ever. I don't use them, don't even pick them up. Makes the game much more challenging. Expert is actually hard.

I can always drain zombies for health, especially in the sunlight :D And yes; I've used conjured swords and magic before, which was fun and easy to manage, but something about the battleaxe makes me want it. I'm hoping to be able to do it well, but I agree with you and doubt it can be done without being annoying.

Two hand won't work for a stage 4 vampire. You'll need to do a lot of sneaking and there are no perks that increase sneak damage of two handed weapons, which means a lot of the tougher opponents will survive your sneak crit hit. Better off going one handed I'd say, unless you really enjoy the challenge.

Really you should go full mage and back you zombies up with destruction magic. Good Thralls will do most of the killing for you and being able to dual cast for impact to support your Thralls is real handy.

Drain their health? Do you mean the incredibly weak nearly useless vampire drain spell? That spell is garbage and can't be relied upon.

Other tips, followers and Thralls will use Atronach staves if you supply them with one. This will double the size of your army. They also never run out of charges.

Lastly do some smithing to upgrade Thralls equipment. Don't need perks, you won't be making stuff just upgrading gear, just skill level.

Actually, I'm gonna try the same thing. Except a Nord (umm...rp wise, I guess he's kind of from a shamanist family). The only prob I see is lvling 2h and alteration and resto.

Personally, I'm mostly going for those mage skills because of some of the passive bonuses. It's just lvling up to get there will be a little tedious. Once it's built, these characters should pretty much rock.

edit: What I mean to say is, they'll rock by having extra survivability. I'd actually not recommend conjuring though. Use a regular non-enchanted weapon and use the elemental fury shout. It's the best melee shout probably, and you can't do it with bound weapons.

Just wear heavy armor too.. avoid the mage armor perks in Alteration. It's already bad enough that you have to lvl alteration with flesh spells, and then switch out the weapon. You don't want to play constantly like that, do you? The best perks for the 2handed user are the magic resistance ones. They're just passive bonuses. And mages are their weak link. This mitigates it. Once you get there, just leave it alone. The rest of the spells are only situational or for cloth wearers. As for resto, healing is good. Especially the one that also regens stam. If you can also manage to get that one that heals a lot of points once a day, even better. You'll probably never die... if you like that kind of thing. ;)
