I need help. I keep gettting an error message,"Failed to intialize renderer.; Hardware T&L required but not supported by Adapter." What exactly does this mean and how can I fix?

5 second google search tells you that its a problem with your graphics card. Your card is too old and you need to upgrade it.

Actually that message should be an obsolete one. The old Intel video chips from prior to 2005 or so didn't have T & L, but surely no one owning such a terrible old antique would be reckless enough to buy a new game now.

My guess would be corrupted graphics drivers, a bad Dx9 install, or a bad game install.

However, just in case, WHAT IS your video graphics?

(Edited out what effectively was a double negative there.)

Not everyone can upgrade their computer every year. I had one for i believe 6 years before i upgraded and that was only because of a major virus and good sales on this past cyber monday.

Then they certainly shouldn't expect to be playing new games on it. Perhaps someone on such a low budget should stick to consoles?

I've had that message occasionally after vpu recover stopped a crash. Haven't seen it for a few weeks, but I got when trying to restart following a session which included intervention by the amd's software. Rebooting fixed it.

you are utterly wrong.

skyrim got good support fr older computers. surprisingly good. better than oblivion or morrowind did.

the only truth is check the requirements.
someone even put up a lit of all supported graphic cards, along with recommended settings

I wonder why peoples like you bother new users who try to play skyrim without wasting 5000$

Wrong. Exrememely so. That was Tig ol' Bitties' list, with help from NotTheKing and Greg49. None of them are employed by Bethesda, and none of the cards named as usable in the lists would throw a "Missing T & L" error. Oblivion would never have run on a video solution that old, and incomplete, either.

Try $500 to $700 for a great computer for gaming.

The upgrade every year is a myth about computers, unless you buy the lowest end hardware out there a CPU/Motherboard will last 3-5 years and a GPU will last 2-3 years.

My gpu is almost 4 years old now, and I can play Skyrim on high (HD 4870 1gb).

Just get the best mid to high end components that are available at the time and you should be all right for quite a while. Most of the people posting with issues just getting the game to run are unfortunately using computers that simply weren't specced for gaming. Office computers and especially laptops just don't have the right parts.

Edit: Honestly the only reason this debate is here is because Gorath didn't sugarcoat the potential bad news.

My comments were neutrally stated, and given the facts, if the PC involved was 7-8 years old, with only an Intel chip, I would consider what I said was not inflammatory in the least:

I see no need to ladle on any honey there at all. Look at the very first answer in the thread, before my more polite version.

Years ago, in a more troubled era, my sense of right and wrong, white and black, good or bad, was far less acclimated to the many shades of gray everything seems to be in, these days. I'm still a product of my own times, and sarcasm was something my agemates and I, men and women, engaged in for humor, for fun and play. Because it was taken wrong so often, I used to go by the handle Grumpy. Of course, I also used some other names starting with a G ~ ~ there was something comforting about the choices.

When some people became too personally bonded to PCs, so that they personally were insulted when I called the Intel video chips in them "Crap", I had to reassess the entire experience of forum messaging, take a year off, I thought. It didn't end up being that long, but I do try harder to not use the sarcasm that's simply a part of who I am. Compare what I said with what the very first responder said.
