Need a New Video Card

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:47 am

Okay, so, right now I'm running an Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT. I need a new one. It needs to be relatively cheap, and, well, better. Any suggestions?

What CPU and amount of RAM do you have? As well as power supply brand and wattage?

I have a Pentium® Dual-Core CPU (if that's what you were asking), 4GB RAM, and I'll get the Power Supply in a second. Opening up my case.

The power supply is Antec and 500 Watt.

Do you know your CPU model number? What resolution is your monitor? All this does matter in a recommendation.

You could do that, or you could just give the juicy bits of the DXDiag.

Well as far as cards go I can really only recommend Nvidia because that's the only brand that I've ever used.

For instance, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133394 (I think. I didn't buy it off Newegg), it's pretty cheap and I can run most games at 1920x1080 without a problem. Unfortunately it's out of stock, but I'm including it for reference.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133397. The real question here is whether or not your PSU has enough power to spare.

"relatively cheap" can be interpreted many ways. :P to me, its something around $150. if your budget is more in the $100 range you might want to consider waiting for the next round of GPUs. i'm not sure if you're in the US or not, but i'm gonna link newegg anyway cuz i like their site. :)

make sure you have enough room in your case to fit these. GPUs these days are getting massive!

here are my recommendations (all before rebates/shipping):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102898 for $110
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625 for $138
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500202 for $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130570 for 160

"relatively cheap" can be interpreted many ways. :P to me, its something around $150. if your budget is more in the $100 range you might want to consider waiting for the next round of GPUs. i'm not sure if you're in the US or not, but i'm gonna link newegg anyway cuz i like their site. :)

make sure you have enough room in your case to fit these. GPUs these days are getting massive!

here are my recommendations (all before rebates/shipping):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102898 for $110
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625 for $138
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500202 for $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130570 for 160

Hm... Interesting. I have no idea which to get. Should I just go for price?

The one that says "Customer Choice Award Winner" seems..promising?

I haven't dabbled enough in this stuff to know what exactly to look for in a card.

EDIT: I've narrowed it down to either the 550 Ti, or the 5770. What do?

Something that wasn't mentioned here is card length. I don't know how much space you have in your case, but you'll need to make sure that the case is big enough to fit your new card. A lot of premades have little free space and horrible cable management making it hard to impossible to fit big cards in there.

Yes. I learned that when I tried to install a 9800 GT. Which leaves me wondering... the two cards I narrowed it down to... are they just as big/bigger? I hope I don't end up having a case too small for any new cards.

The 550 ti is 3/4 an inch shorter than the 9800GT according to nvidia (which lists the 9800GT as 9 inches). The 5770 is .85 inches shorter according to some blog I found when googling for the card length.

Both cards are two-slot cards, though (will block another PCI slot), so they are significantly fatter than the 9800GT.

Eh. Maybe the best bet will just be to take the thing in with me to the store, and see if they fit before I buy one of them.

Better: build a completely new PC, pour ligher fluid over the Pentium chip in your current PC, light it on fire and record the entire thing so you can upload it to youtube for my enjoyment

(You actually don't have one of the terribad Pentium chips, I just have an unreasonable hatred for Pentium)

..Wish I had the money to. Heck, if I did, I'd mail the thing to you and let you do it.

hee... sorry to do this, but i've got another option for you:

http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-100282XTREME/dp/B004W75ATI/ref=sr_1_12?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1319342242&sr=1-12 for $150 before rebate. this is the card i would get for only a few bucks more than the 550, and a much better performer. i'd rather save up a bit more and go for this one. don't be confused with the 5850 moniker; the 58xx series are better performance-wise than the 68xx series.

caution: this card is massive!! 11.5" long (according to amazon's listing; i'm not sure if this is the actual card or the retail box) leaves little space in any case. if this will not fit, you might want to search for some radeon 6850s and see if they are any smaller. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908 is a good one from newegg for $150. newegg's site doesn't mention the length, so you'll have to do some searching to find the dims.

edit:
card length of 6850 is 9.0", according to http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=631&Itemid=72&limit=1&limitstart=1

Something about these cards that bothers me, sure they're SLI/XFire ready, but they take up two damn slots, so how the hell am I supposed to fit them in?

Not that I've actually tried, mind you, as I only have the one card.

Well, if the 9800 GT couldn't fit, I doubt any you suggested here would.

I had the 9400 GT is my previous card, I tried to replace it with the 460 but it wouldn't even fit in the case. I ended up buying an entirely new rig and building it from scratch.

Yeah, that's what's bothering me. I do NOT have the money to do that.

..how much did it cost you?

EDIT: Couldn't I just buy a bigger case?

You need to crack open your case and measure your current card's length and height. Also check to see if you have room for a two slot card (which most decent cards are). Another question is if your power supply has a six pin connector. Unless you order something like an AMD HD 5670 or HD 6670 you'll need one (those two are like your old card - get all their juice from the PCI-E slot). Given your rather weak CPU and small monitor resolution you really don't need more than those two (and they would be a HUGE jump from your current card).

I can almost guarantee this would fit in anything but a slimline case. Tiny single-slot card, no external power connector needed, quiet fan and decent performance (about all your computer would need). Pretty cheap to boot.

I'll measure my card in a few minutes.

I want to point that I'm not trying to build a NASA supercomputer. I just want to be able to play newer/new games at decently attractive settings for the next few years or so. Could this be done with just a new card? If not, would I have to buy an entirely new PC?

I bought my PC for around $850.

It consists of these parts:

1 x ($89.99) CASE CM|RC-692-KKN2 ADVANCED RT

1 x ($69.99) HD 1.5T|ST ST31500341AS 7K 32M % - OEM

1 x ($49.99) MEM 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

1 x ($119.99) PSU CORSAIR|CMPSU-650HX 650W RT

1 x ($20.99) DVD BRN ASUS | DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS% - OEM

1 x ($99.99) WIN HOME PREMIUM 7 64-BIT OEM - OEM

1 x ($224.99) CPU INTEL|CORE I5 2500K 3.3G 6M R

That doesn't include the motherboard or GPU though.
