I need a scary movie

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:11 am

Let me just start out by saying I love being scared, especially with friends. However, I can't seem to find a truly scary movie to watch with my mates.

Last night we watched REC, which I heard was terrifying. It was a good movie, but it wasn't really scary. In fact, I can't remember the last time a movie scared me. Paranormal Activity 1+2 were good, but not that scary. The Shining is one of my favorites, but it's not scary anymore. Movies like The Grudge aren't scary in the least. We watched Sybil a few months ago, and that shook us up pretty well.

So what I need is a scare the [censored] out of you movie. Any truly terrifying suggestions CD?

There is no movie that comes close to the Shining.

You might like Rosemary's Baby. Also, The Descent was kind of scary during a midnight screening at a film festival. Open Water is pretty good.

Alternately, try reading the Shining novel, or The Dark Half (another Stephen King novel).

I'll recommend what I always recommend: Eraserhead.
David Lynch is... not quite right in the head. Let me just put it that way.

I would also recommend anything by Takashi Miike- Audition, in particular, squicked me right the hell out. And I do not squick easily.
If you haven't seen A Clockwork Orange, go do so. It's scary in quite an unconventional way; plus you get to see a young Malcolm McDowell ham it up for the camera. And who doesn't love that?

EDIT: Oh yes, also? Se7en. One of the best suspense movies I've seen in recent history.

And The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Contains the most messed-up set design in anything ever, plus a psychotic, sleepwalking Conrad Veidt.

I second the Audition recommendation.

A Clockwork Orange is one of the best films, Seven is great as well, but these are not really scary.

Phantasm is a film that scared the crap out of me when I was a little kid, but I imagine it would feel quite dated at this point.

Aw, I wanted to recommend Eraserhead.
But, yeah. Watch Eraserhead. Its not scary, per se, but it will make you ask "What the hell just happened?" throughout the whole movie.

I just saw it for the first time in December as a christmas gift and yes its not in your face fright scary but more psychological surreal and creepy and sad . My niece thought it should haved ended after the secret was revealed and everything after that just didnt make sense. Me i could have stayed lost in its bizarre euphoric daze for another two hours easily.

Here are a few more horror movie suggestions-

Cannibal Holocaust horrified me to no end, so I'd recommend that. It contains real animal cruelty, though, so it depends if you can stomach that stuff.

Can't think of anything else, TBH. Most of my other suggestions have either been mentioned already or are too mainstream to miss.

The Dark Half (another Stephen King novel).

Pandorum. I don't know why it got such lackluster reviews - I thought it was pretty darn good. Very suspenseful (and gruesome at times) with a good twist at the end.

I think at a later age we need mind thrillers to please our horror addictions.

Buried, unlike all of the terrible contemporary horror movies, this one actually does scare you.

Seriously, you found the Scary Movie franchise to be scary? They were developed as a joke.

It depends on what your definition of a scary movie is..

Is it one with many thrills? (Complete silence... then killer jumps out of nowhere!)

Or is it blood and gore? (body parts laying everywhere, where you can actually see the ripped flesh, and oozing blood)

Or is it disturbing mental images? (the thought of killing innocent little bunnies for pleasure)

Or deep chilling thoughts? (we are not alone, the end is near)

The classics? (Werewolves, Dracula, Frankenstien...)

Or a combination of them all?

---

If it's thrills... then movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and other slashers in general are pretty good.

For blood and gore, the above slashers are pretty good, but I'd like to add movies like Final Destination, Saw, and AVP.

For disturbing mental images; Seven (or 7 or Se7en), and Night of the Living Dead (1968 one, not the remakes)

And for deep chilling thoughts; Sixth Sense, Signs, War of the Worlds.

Classics; House On Haunted Hill, The Exorcist, Wolfman, Van Helsing
---

It also depends on what scares you. Zombies? Aliens? Ghosts? Classic monsters?

Cannibal Holocaust might be a little hard to find. It's not sold anywhere because of it's cruelty.

Also, if you really want to be scared, watch Blair With Project. It's some scary stuff.

It is a joke. The OP needs scary movies, so this bloke sums them up. Get it?
