Need some advice, I am just getting into Elder Scrolls

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:34 pm

Hi, I just got into the elder scrolls with Skyrim. And all I can say is I love it. I thought I had the sandbox style RPG, But WAS I WRONG..... With that being said, I know very little about Elder Scrolls. And I was thinking about picking up the Oblivion Bundle, I have alot of time on my hands and I am filling it with Games right now. Will I get anything out of Oblivion other then lore, should I put my Skyrim on hold and play Oblivion through? Whats your thoughts? your suggestions?

Couldn't hurt. One could also spend hours reading about the lore on the UESP. I find it interesting (since I'm also new to TES).

Personally, I think it'd be hard to not gain some perspective from playing the previous games. If I had the time you are talking about then I'd definitely give it a go. But as it is I have to make time for Skyrim and that uses up all my free time. Give it a go, see what you think.

I would definitely get oblivion. Youll definitely get more lore and it's a wonderful game.

Give Oblivion a go it's well worth it just for the shivering isles expansion alone. That and you get more skills attributions the ability to make your own spells and other stuff i'm probably forgetting

Morrowind however offers a much deeper experience than either game if you can stomach the poor combat and animations.

though both games offer more options than Skyrim i do think Skyrim is the best of three it just feels better to explore and the combat is more fun.

I played Oblivion for over 6000+ hours, well since release and it's still installed on my other PC. It is and will always be one of my top 5 favorite games! Oblivion has a different beauty and challenge than Skyrim. I would highly recommend the game! I totally enjoyed going into Oblivion Gates and kicking some Dremora butt! The main quest is very well done and OMG I miss Martin <3 I must play OB again, once Skyrim loosens its hold on me!

Edit: If you are on PC, I highly recommend http://www.lostspires.com/ mod, as well as http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/OOO/OOO_Guide.html

If you liked Skyrim, then by all means try any of the other games in the series.

You don't necessarily have to play Oblivion to get a better appreciation of the Elder Scrolls. When I played Oblivion I didn't read many if any of the books and I didn't concern myself with history, religion, or culture at all. I hardly understood the premise behind the main quest, so I mostly just ran around and picked everyone's pockets.

That said, I didn't really get into the Elder Scrolls until I played Skyrim. For whatever reason, that game intrigued me to the point that I started reading the in-game books and studying lore on the http://www.uesp.net/ and the http://www.imperial-library.info/ website. Doing that really educated me and got me into the whole series.

Yeah, reading the books is a must. If you go back and play Oblivion after Skyrim, the graphics might bug you a bit. For a lot of other games the graphical quality is nice, but secondary - but with this style of RPG, the high-quality graphics really give you a sense of being there.

It was still a good game, though.

This is honestly the best $50 that anyone could ever spend on any game series. Seriously. With mods there are thousands of hours of entertainment right here.

Just remember to at least improve your textures via mods for the older games before playing. It will give you a much better experience if your video card has enough RAM to handle it.

Well, granted. If there were some way to change how people looked in Oblivion, that would be the biggest single fix that could possibly be made to the game. Unfortunately that sort of thing is coded into the game, and can't be fixed with a simple texture-swap.

Welcome to TES! These are probably the best sites if you want to know more about the lore or game in general.

If you go back and play Morrowind, then you really *must* download and install the Morrowind Graphics Extender. Morrowind is a great game, but by default, the engine only support really ancient resolutions. MGE allows you to use any resolution supported by your monitor. Also, you can increase the "fog distance" (Morrowind, in order to adapt to really ancient video hardware, had this fog system where you couldn't see more than a certain distance before everything got hidden by fog - by doing this, the game engine could skip drawing distant land, objects, trees, etc.). On modern hardware, you can basically turn off the fog and see for miles.

Personally, I usually keep the fog on, but increase the distance out enough that it doesn't drive me nuts.

I end up buying it for 12.49 on Steam and its all the DLC and Expand so I will be putting Skyrim on the back burner while I play Oblivion, just have to find some Mods for it now.
