Need some help with my Radeon HD 6870 Graphics Card

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:37 pm

I think the problem is that I need to connect both DVI sockets on the card to my monitor. I only connected one but I'm not too sure what I need to connect the other. Do I just need a VGA cable connected to my monitor as well and then use a DVI adapter to connect that to the graphics card?

Or do I actually need to connect one of the display ports to my monitor as well as one of the DVI socket and if so what do I need to connect the display port?

You only need one cable from your GPU to each monitor, unless you need a separate audio jack for sound as well. The point of having multiple is to have multiple displays. Unless you have a super special monitor and want to do some sort of picture and picture set up, but chances are if that's the case you don't really need to ask this question ;).

Problem is there's no signal to the monitor and on another thread someone suggested that I might need to connect both DVI sockets to my monitor but on the instructions I got with the card (which doesn't explain anything), it looks like I need to connect one of the DVI sockets and a display port to the monitor?

That's very unlikely. Do you even have a monitor with a display port socket?? Those are fairly rare and often on the pricey side. Have to connect two DVI connects seems strange too. Fairly basic, but do you have it on the right input?? And have you tried connecting to another screen/monitor??

Is your monitor set to accept the input your sending? Monitors will normally have a button to switch between HDMI, VGA and DVI.

Another thing to note, if you're trying to output a resolution higher than your monitor can take, it won't work.

I think it's set to DVI, as it's usually connected with a DVI cable.

Has the monitor ever worked?

If you have integrated graphics on your mobo, you could have swapped it over to that on accident. You'd just have to plug into your motherboard, go in the BIOS to switch it off, then plug back in to the monitor.
