Netbook won't turn on.

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:50 pm

So I've had an Acer one - 1410 Netbook for a couple of years now. Out of the blue it refuses to power on. When I hit the power button, the battery light would flash orange, and the same would happen when I pressed the power button.

After many days, the light wouldn't flash at all when I pressed enter/power with it plugged into the wall. I'm guessing the battery was now dead.

I'm assuming that the adapters dead, but at the same time, I also heard a thing or two about corrupted battery memory and damaged DC jacks.

My brother has a similar adapter (his adapter can plug into my netbook but my netbook adapter won't plug into his laptop) with identical input/outputs and it still couldn't charge or even turn on the computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

1. Pull out battery

2. Plug it in

Does plugged-in light turn on? If so, try turning it on

If it doesn't even sputter once, then you got a serious problem and something is fried somewhere.

Bad memory can keep them from posting, it's probably the DC jack or battery(pretty common at the service center). When you plug in AC adapter no light?

Pulled, out the battery. Plugged it in. Nothing.

Could it just be the adapter though?

My AC adapter doesn't have a light on it...very helpful, I know.

If it didn't light up, then it's definitely the adapter/jack

Which is a common problem and in this case that is a good thing because most stores will have adapters available so you won't have to order one. ;)

When you said serious, I thought you meant serious. :o

I'll have to do it online I think. I went to BestBuy and Tiger Direct today and couldn't find an adapter with the same input/output voltage.

Should I just order a new battery ontop of that though?

That's IF it lit up and didn't even sputter. If it didn't light up then it didn't ever recieve power, so of course it won't turn on.

I'll report back here when it turns on! :P

Thanks guys!

Just hope it's not the power socket on your netbook. If that's damaged then you'll probably have to send it in for repairs.

Well, heres another piece of the story that might be kind of relevant. I tried cut some info out initially so people would read it.

I actually did manage to get it turned on one day, after lightly wiggling the chord. It began to charge so I left it. I came back and it worked for about an hour (its supposed to run for about 9.) When it turned on I immediately went to the battery icon in the system tray.

It was completely messed up. It said I had 32 hours of battery life or something. There was also an X on it, symbolizing that my battery was at 10% capacity.

After that day, it did the same thing as it initially did; It saved my session, shut down and refused to turn back on again.

Do you own a multimeter?

If so, test the adaptor for output voltage.
As to your brothers adaptor, it sounds like his plug is smaller than yours, correct? His plugs into yours, but not yours to his. In that case the exterior diameter on his might be too small to make contact, or his interior diameter too large. Still doesn't narrow down the problem if that's the case.

Regardless, meter out your power supply or drop by your local Radioshack and see if they can. Likely there's a universal supply there with the right voltage RANGES for you netbook. In fact check out this one. IGO are great products, 2 year warranty, huge list of compatible brands... http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3964926&clickid=prod_cs

I don't own a multimeter though that'd be the determining factor. I actually took apart the adapter to see if the insides were damaged due to heat and it wasn't. If it wasn't damaged it is now. :P

I'll hit up a radio shack / circuit city and see what I can find. :)

Try flashing it, things usually get turned on when I try that :hubbahubba:

Oops. You're in Canada. No Radioshack there. Try The Source. http://www.thesource.ca/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=iGo-HO&product=2737004... And they just started a Trade In program for electronics like video games and cell phones.

I hit up the source today, bought a universal adapter and voila! It works again!

But the problems never end.

Now when I hover over the battery life icon in the system tray, it says, battery plugged in not charging.

This is kinda seems stupid as the computer is fairly new. Do I have to buy a new Battery too? Could there be another problem?

EDIT: I think I fixed it. I had to reinstall the power management drivers in the device manager section.

While I have this thread open though, can anyone tell me why windows update uses up so much of my memory and CPU?

I fixed that too. I just disabled it from ever running again. :P
