New computer, stuttering

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 3:33 pm

Hello.

I had to buy a new computer as my old one is going kaput, so I've installed Skyrim on it to test it out. At first the Helgen sequence ran ok as far as I could tell, but inside the fort I did notice some wierd stuttering. When I look at the ground and walk along, it's smooth for a few seconds but then I get like a stutter, jagginess or something...it's like the FPS goes down by about half, but then it returns to smooth again, then back to stutter.

When starting the game for the first time, it auto-detected it for ultra. Thing is on my old machine it ran very well, I was surprised how well it did. Never got the same stutter on it at all. (I did get other problems, but ironed those out) The specs on my old one are:

i7 870 2.93GHz
1gb Radeon 5850
4gb Corsair Dual-DDR3 1333MHz
XP 32

Yet, on my new computer I get the stutter, a better machine. How? Main specs of that are:

i7-2600 3.40GHz
3gb Radeon 7970
8gb Kingston Dual-DDR3 1600MHz
Win 7 64

And an SSD, but I doubt it's that. I notice the same thing sort of when turning around, again that was not a problem on my old machine and was very smooth, everywhere. I cannot understand why the new one should do this. Does the monitor resolution on the resolution of the game have to match? Thanks for any replies.

Edit: Not running any mods.

Same problem here, and since a long time I'm having it, and this needs an urgent fix. Do this in the next update, Bethesda, we are counting on you. Thanks.

No stuttering on this sytem... Did you update to new drivers, chipset drivers, video card drivers, some of the SSD's need firmware updates to operate properly. The updates for SSD's can be accessed from their respective websites.

Possibly the stutter is occuring when the framerate is too high (giving the effect of a low framerate). Try running a program called DXTory, it's capture software with a Framerate Limiter option (you don't need to be capturing to use the Limiter). Just download and install the latest version (trial version is free), go into the 'Advanced' tab and turn the 'Limit Video FPS' option to 58 (assuming your refresh rate is 60). Then leave DXTory running while you play Skyrim.

Yeah, I bought it from a company that builds custum PC's, one of the things they do is update them all. I know that the GPU is completely up-to-date as I checked. Game is up-to-date also, thank you Steam.

Thanks, that somehow makes sense, (High framerate looking low) because it only does it sometimes. For every few seconds of smooth I get an equal number of stuttering. When turning around it's like I'm fighting against something, like it doesn't want to turn around because my characters head is attached to a rubber band and wants to snap back and it gets a bit choppy. Absolutely wierd thing. Seems to be worse in first person also.

Does MSI Afterburner do the same thing, I wanted that also for it's video capture abilities. I've just thought of something else, on my old machine running it in windowed mode caused quite a bit of lag also, so I'm thinking whatever caused that might help bring down the FPS on the new one, but as it has that extra oomph the FPS might even it out. Also maybe to bring down the FPS I'll ram everything up to as high as possible, specifically monitor resolution.

I'll give those a try anyway, thanks for the replies guys.

Yes, I am just finding out that:
The greater the power of the gfx cards, the more the stutter.
The lower the gfx settings the more the stutter.

Since I have two 7870s in SLI, your 7970 should be equal or less. Try setting all Skyrim gfx options to ultra.

Try putting the shadows on High instead of Ultra. Also use driver anti-aliasing and not the in-game one.

there is a mod that fixes stuttering. It made all my stutters go away. I believe it is called 64hz stutter fix, on skyrim.nexusmods

This mod is also a framerate limiter (although my computer has issues with d3d9 injectors - eg: ENB mods).

Another possible solution is to turn the Anti Aliasing right up to reduce the framerate

Hello, I had a similar problem where I was getting a lot of stuttering problems even from the beginning, and looking down at the floor or sky would produce smooth FPS entirely due to not being much to look at.
How I fixed this problem was simple, I hope it works the same for you.
  • After I re-downloaded Skyrim after 1.5 patch (this could occur on previous patches) I noticed under Data Files that the "High Resolution Packs" was selected automatically.
    • After disabling them, the PC ran fine with no stuttering and I could continue to play the game on High/Ultra High with no more problems.
To me it was an easy problem but I never thought how badly it would affect my PC. Give it a try if you can, if not then I hope your framerate issue gets sorted soon!

While frame limiters work great for "limiting frames" & smoothing out game play, it will make your load times insanely long. Yes MSI has a frame limiter, but your issue can most likely be fixed without the frame limiter. For me, the load time was far worse then then my rare occasional stutter in heavy graphic areas.

Vsync will limit your frames as well to whatever your refresh rate is on your monitor. Most commonly that is 60hz, thus 60 fps.

Yes, my old PC never stuttering, because weak CPU (AMD X2 5200), and never reach 60 FPS. This new one is X3 460, and stuttering crawling out from the dark.

I think, the Gamebyro engine is very old (from 2000, and first dual-core CPU launch was 2005!), and don't handle good the high speed HW-s because timing and interrupt ect. handling. Stuttering never become patched or fixed from Bethesda - as long as them used the Gamebugger engine.
