A new country was formed Saturday, and the news never talked

Why don't news stations talk about things relevant in the world?

It was all over the news stations I've been watching, both Canadian and American. I suppose there has been the endless stream of "Casey Anthony" anolysis to sift through, but I definitely saw stories about Sudan. Are you outside of North America?

The OP is in the USA so I guess he just missed it. I picked it up and am in Spain, I suppose it depends on the news channel watched and the amount of other news that is being covered at the time.

Oh, let's not follow the politics of the reason for South Sudan being formed.

Why don't they talk about it? I can't answer that without breaking the rules... So I wont...

I saw a large number of major news outlets discussion the election that approved this, and the disputes that followed. I haven't seen much about it's technical independence, but after weeks of news stories about South Sudan most of what can be said has been said.

I'll admit I do pay extra attention to international news stories, I subscribe to Foreign Policy, and I regularly check their website. However I saw quite a lot on the websites for major American news channels as well.

I didn't see it on the news, either OP. That could be because I never watch TV, though.

That's interesting... and this is strangely the first time I've heard about it. People are too obsessed with the verdict on a certain murder trial and going against the flow of the American justice system to convict her "because she's so totally guilty and the system needs to overhauled because this one, single case is an outrage" and blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, now it seems I get my interesting update. The founding of a new country... I'm liking this. Where can I get the most information about it? I don't think news channels are really talking all that much about it, here.

I noticed this, I guess our news has been preoccupied with accusing Rupert Murdoch of causing WWII.

All rise for his Excellency, Rabbi Barry White!

"I was promised a microphone THIS big"

I guess it's less newsworthy as it's really been on the cards for years now.

As much as I hate to admit it I do have to suprsess a giggle whenever (north) sudan is in the news... I always mishear "Khartoum Government" as "Cartoon Government" and a picture of the Looney Tunes characters trying to run a country jumps straight into my mind.

Back on topic, I saw plenty of news on South Sudan. I guess you need to change your news sources.

I saw it on Yahoo news. That's the most news I get. I don't get a newspaper and I prefer reading my news. I assume it was on most news stations though. Is a country forming really a big deal though? There are a lot of countries. It doesn't really seem like big news to me. I'm saying this about the country by the way, it's huge news if this helped people, but I haven't really kept track of it and I know you guys can't tell me without breaking rules. So I guess I've got some reading to do.

In Sudan and Africa it is. This is the end of a civil war, but the start of a whole new mess. South Sudan is prodominantly Christian and Oil Rich. North Sudan is mostly Muslim (so there's a significan cultural difference), not rich in oil, but most of the oil is going to have to go through there in order to get into the international market.

There's a lot of bad blood - but these two very different nations are going to have to get on as they both need each other (South Sudan needs the North's transport links, and the North needs some Oil money from its transport).

The Darfur genocide was one of the saddest events in recent history, I was involved in a club dedicated to it and got to meet several of the refugees. They all came to tears when discussing it. Congratulations to the South Sudanese for never giving up and the best of luck to them.

Saw it on Fox News and in the LA Times, so it got coverage. Just not a whole lot. I think a lot of folks were expecting something like this to happen anyway so it didn't come as much of a surprise.
