New to Fallout Series, What should I know?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:46 pm

All I know is that Fallout: New Vegas is an RPG. Thats it. And it has something to do with nukes and whatnot. What do I need to know? Like, how does the game work, what type of weapons, etc?

Also, Can I become the guy on the cover of the game? That would be neat.

Play Fallout 3, or better yet, the originals. If you really don't want to do that, then look at the wiki http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki. Searching "Fallout World" is a good place to start for understanding lore. Otherwise, the gameplay mechanics will be explained when you play.

Also, no, you can't become that guy, it's just a form of armor. You can find the armor in game, so I suppose that is what you mean.

You can wear his armor, Basically what you need to know is that this is a post nuclear (post apocalypse) RPG. I suggest going on the Fallout wiki http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki and read up on lore. Or buy Fallout 1, 2, or 3.

Hope it helps :tops:

New to Fallout Series, What should I know?

Its changed.

*The lore and the reason it was cool enough to buy (and continue creating), is found mainly in the first one (and somewhat in the second).

FO3 is radically different, and the pros & cons of this have been up for debate here for three years. (Do you still want in?)

***edit:

I would suggest that you do not read the Wiki that will be mentioned ~at all, until after you play the game for a week. If you must read it, read only of FO1 & 2 (but its far better to play them).

The base core premise is that the world reality fractured a bit and Fallout is set in a the future of the 50's idealized assumptions of what it might be like; and a few of the physical laws of the universe are a bit warped by this, so some weird stuff happens.

The other thing to know is that FO3 was made by an entirely different studio (the new owners), and Fallout New Vegas is being made by a studio founded by core members of the company that originally made Fallout 2. So we'll see what happens.

NO INTEREST IN THOSE GAMES

Then why the hell are you on these forums? Fallout 3 is just like New Vegas. And if you want to know so much about the games why aren't you willing to give the games other then New Vegas a try?? I'm sorry but I see no logic in this.

I think hes bored so he's trolling.

I agree, no one on the FALLOUT FORUMS would not be interested in any of the frickin games other then New Vegas.

Fallout has one of the most split fan-bases for a video game series out there. If you want to retain your sanity, leave while you still can.

But honestly, if you want to get into Fallout lore, just start with New Vegas. Once you've decided whether or not you like the game you can decide what to do next. If you like the lore, go read up about it on The Vault wiki (google it) and think about playing Fallout 1 and 2. If you liked playing the game more than learning lore, play Fallout 3. No matter what you do, it would be wise of you to play Fallout 3 because it represents what the series currently is like. As Gizmo said, the series has changed, and games like Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas represent what all future Fallout games will be like from now on.

If you just care about learning what Fallout is about and have no interest in actually playing the games, go and read up on your lore on The Vault wiki.

Edit: You know, I very often find myself wondering how many people are warned every week because they aren't aware calling people a troll is a warnable offense. I see it said in nearly every topic in this section. Do you guys just like trying to get warned or...?

NO INTEREST IN THOSE GAMES

With no interest in the past series, you won't get the most out of this game... It will be a vast, and highly interactive FPS (with clunky FPS). If that is sufficient by itself... Then this game will astound and be money well spent. There are folks here with 1000 hrs playing this game [FO3] and it has no multiplayer whatsoever. FO:New Vegas will be an extension of FO3 in several interesting ways.

I agree with this. Just at least play Fallout 3. You'll be glad you did.

Fallout 3 is just like New Vegas.

i hope not. its very difficult for me to like fallout 3

I was dumbing down the statement by a mile for a noob to understand. I don't think New Vegas will be like Fallout 3 in anyway except the engine. Everything else has changed. And I'm quite happy about that :tops:

A VERY BREIF INACCURATE BORING SUMMARY

2077: China nuked us, people hide in shelters called vaults.

Fallout 1: A dude finds some pre-war chemicals and falls in. He gets mutated. He starts mutating other people to start an army of "Super-Mutants". A guy leaves his vault to find a water chip to save his vault. He discovers the super-mutants. When he goes back to the vault the send him back out to kill them. He kills them.

Fallout 2: The great grandkid of the guy who killed the mutants lives in a developing tribe. His tribe is dying. He hears of a machine made in the vaults called a GECK that will save his tribe. He goes and gets it. When he gets back to his tribe everybody has been taken away by the "Enclave" (american govronment)
He stops the "Enclave". The NCR (New California Republic) prospers. His tribe becomes a great city.

Fallout 3: On the other side of the country A kids dad escapes from his vault. He goes out to look for his dad. When he finds his da, his dad is trying to purify the water. The "Enclave" try to stop him. Again you kill them, and the water is purified

Fallout New Vegas: in 2280 a delivery boy gets shot and buried in the Vegas area. He is revived, and goes out to find who shot him, and what they wanted. He then gets tied into a war between the Caesars Leigion (slavers), the NCR, and Mr. House (owner of vegas).

I suggest you go on the wiki and read about an hour on each of the numbered games.

Make sure that you are okay with open ended style gameplay. I have lots of friends who sadly dropped the masterpiece that was Fallout 3 because they wanted more linearity to their games. They said F3 didn't hold their hand enough. It's dissapointing.

Things to know...

1: "Raiders" are just folks down on their luck. Share a cap or two with them.

2: "Deathclaws" are plush, squishy, and fun to hug.

3: The "Enclave" are a bunch of counterculture hippies that just wanna share a good hit on the good stuff with whoever comes to join them.

4: "Super Mutants" are a technically advanced society whose average intellect is genius-level compared to the rest of us humans.

I think that about covers it.

Basics of the Fallout series:

Alternate reality where the timeline spilt off after the events of World War 2, America stays in a kind of 50's like term of development. Shoot forward to the 21st century and the natural resources are running dry, tensions between each country gets worse. In 2077 those tensions reach breaking point, even more so than the invasion of Alaska by Chinese forces a decade earlier. A war lasts for two hours as the nukes fall, many die and the world is almost destroyed.

A century or so later someone leaves Vault 13 to look for a water chip and ends up becoming involved in something a lot bigger, see above in another post. A century later the descendent of this person also makes their mark on the wastelands.
A couple of decades later in 2277 a young woman/man, depending on choice at the beginning of the game, leaves Vault 101 to look for their father and also becomes part of something bigger.

New Vegas is set three years later with a new character just called The Courier, he/she is shot and left for dead while delivering an important package.

The basics of the Fallout series is simple enough: Survive. Get your levels up, improve, learn, save often. Never run in guns blazing unless you enjoy dying in a very messy fashion.

Great series. It might be best to start off with Fallout 1 and 2, maybe Tactics though it's not considered canon just like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Fallout 3 is a different approach, it's an RPG with FPS elements to it's combat. New Vegas is much the same, though with some differences according to the information there is on the game.

There's a fair amount of back history in the series which can be interesting to be read and explains a lot.

If you have no interest in playing them why do you care? I'm surprised people even respond to this thread with your "no interest" IN CAPS attitude.

OP. You can find links to the information you want in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1087573-fallout-new-vegas-frequently-asked-questions/ at the top of this page. You don't have to play any of the previous games as it can be played a a stand alone game.
