New Nvidia 680 card, Skyrim just locks PC

Post » Fri Jul 06, 2012 7:37 am

As above, just running along in the open, suddenly screen freezes, no nothing but a pretty screen... I haven't had a Nvidia card for yonks, so I am probably doing something real noobish...

DXDiag, truncated a bit.

What card did you have before? ATI/AMD? If so, have you cleaned the drivers out completely before installing the 680?

Also, what power supply do you have?

ALSO, why the hell have you got 64GB RAM??

I just built this PC, including a new SSD drive. The power supply has an equally embarrassing amount of quality amps available. My previous PC is in my signature as my secondary PC. The old 5870 worked just fine thank you, and a 7970 was tempting except for the length. I didn't want to lose two drive cages.

My PC was built with the idea of still doing the odd bit of photoshop work, hence the seeming overbuilt bits. The ram, I'll use about half of it for a ram drive for my scratch disk. Thanks for asking, now what do I do to get rid of the issue?

1) Make sure that all drivers and Directx are up to date.

2) Try deleting your Skyrim and SkyrimPrefs inis and let skyrim generate new ones after following step 1

I am using the Skyrim provided .ini files, but I modified the skyrim.ini to accomodate the HDC and HDC fix BSA's.
I installed directx 9.0c from Microsoft, and let Skyrim configure it. If there are some DX configuration changes I should make (can one do that?) let me know.

The nvidia driver is 301.42 WHQL

Does this happen with anything else or just Skyrim?

Please mention the programs you tested.

Also, please refresh all your INI files and your RenderInfo file.

As a test, (of photoshop) I loaded a 6+GB RAW file yesterday, made about 10 Gb's worth of changes, printed the results to screen, all no issue. (scratch disks in RAM are FAST!)

I am wondering if the fact that dx 9.0c was not loaded prior to installing Skyrim had an impact. When Skyrim detected my hardware, it set my video preferences to high quality. I expected ultimate.
