New playable races: Good or bad idea?

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:01 am

I`ve been an Elder Scrolls fan since Morrowind, I love all Bethesda games, but recently I`ve thought about how nice it would be to see a new playable race included as a possible DLC content for Skyrim. It would serve as a good platform for the next edition of Elder Scrolls, as everyone would be able to test it out and relay their thoughts good or bad back to Bethesda via these forums. The question is which race would you like to see included - if any?? I`d like to see maybe the Goblins as a viable race choice  as they`re versitile little guys who could turn their hands to many different playstyles,it would certainly be both fun and challenging to do a complete playthrough with them. It`ll be interesting to see what other people think about including a new playable race,so lets hear your opinions - good or bad.

It's a bad idea. Reasons will be listed below this post.

There's a good enough variety as it is. Any new race added will likely just feel like one of the ones we already have, unless it is something radically different like a humanoid insect or what have you.

would rather have more spells, weapons, armor or quest. <----- these affect more of the game play mechanics

As far as I'm concerned, more customisation options can't be bad. Unless it's something outrageous, like bringing back the Dwemer or conjuring a brand new race out of thin air which hasn't been previously mentioned in the lore.

A new race isn't high on my wish list but I'd be open to the idea.

well there are some subspecies that could be interesting, I always wondered what the Dagi-Raught Khajiit were like and they were my fave modded race in Morrowind because it felt like it would be in the world. And a return of the cat-girl Ohmes Raugt would be welcome in my book but I'm quite happy that they made the Suthy Raught Khajiit more interesting.

Modders have added a number of new races for the PC version of previous TES games, so I expect a lot of them to pop up. Some of them even fit with the lore, many of them have abilities and stats that mark them as unique compared to the default races. Some were in the Oblivion, but not marked as playable, e.g. Dremora and Golden Saints.

The Ape people and the Dwemer. And anyone who says "Dwemer aren't returning and I don't want them to be a playable race, herp durr herp." can go die by jumping off a building for being a buzzkill and preventing it from ever happening by being ignorant.

I don't know about totally new races. But maybe a band of snow elves come back, or dwelmer. Something like that.. I think a totally new race might go the way of horse armor in the community.
edit: I find it plausable that the dwelmer experiments sent them into the future. They will return, and dissapoint us all.

I don't think the Dwemer are ever going to return. *heads to nearest bridge*

I think it's time we saw sload. I was thinking maybe the ape-men that worship the Altmer but then I realized that "ape-man" is redundant, we already have humans.

I only play games on my xbox 360,so I don`t know anything about mods etc I`m afraid.I was kind of thinking about Dark Seducers or Golden Saints as playable races, they are a type of Daedra but they act an look more human I think. They`re excellant melee fighters an pretty good with a bow too,so they`d fit in nicely.Finding a reason to introduce them as playable races wouldn`t be hard either,as Sheogorath is very inpredictable as we all know  it would be just like him to cast them out into the world.

Some of the more neutral Akavir races would be cool. Like the monkey folk.

I agree  I would love to see 2 more races also.I had a look on the UESP wiki site for possible ideas, and saw " Centaurs " who appeared in Daggerfell. They`re a sem-intelligent beast race that possesses the head and torso of a powerfully built man with the lower body of a horse.I reckon they may well make a good choice for a beast playable race

Then it would probably have to be one of the Akaviri races. As long as they would stick to lore I wouldn't mind, though I would prefer that they added more quests, unique items, generic items and factions instead.

I'd be rather strange for an Akaviri to suddenly walk in Tamriel without it being an incredibly strange occurance. You'd be so different that the entire game would have to change based on you selecting that race, so preferably no.

It can happen in a few games, if there is ever a good reason for the Akaviri to go back to Tamriel.

I would just like to thank everyone for your input so far  It may not be high up on everyone`s list but its a worthwhile subject to discuss at least. We`ve had a few great suggestions so far,so keep them coming folks, for the more people that get onboard with ideas, the better chance that Bethesda will consider the idea  I love the ideas of Sload and the Ape people, they would both make excellant choices.

Sweet mother of god no. Only if it's sub species of existing races, or MAYBE other races already in lore.

I wouldn't expect it in this setting, but there are rumors that akaviri plan to invade tamriel again. Then it'd make sense. Especially when some akaviri have as many issues with the snake race as humans would.

.. Goblins ..

Oh yes. Let's ignore eons of Elder Scrolls lore and *poof* some sentient Goblins onto existence..

There's enough to add as it is. Akaviri races, Sloads, etc. And then imho only if it fits the lore. Like a renewed Akaviri invasion.

Well, goblins already exist, but they are an aggresive, semi-intelligent race that is killed on sight :P
