New player to Skyrim for the PC

Post » Mon Jul 16, 2012 3:25 am

Hi all,

Thought I'd make a quick post to say hello to the community here!

I decided to finally give the game a try after reading so much positive stuff about it! I've a long history of playing MMORPG's but decided to take a break from them and try a single player game. I wanted to play something in the same style but move away from the online side of things for awhile.

I'm currently downloading the game from Steam and have just noticed there's a HD DLC pack which can be downloaded. Have many players downloaded that too?

Thanks!

HD DLC pack is supposed to improve textures, but I don't notice anything, and some people have reported bugs, but it is free, so you may as well download it and see if it works.

However, if you want to improve graphics, check out mods at http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/

you will need to make an account then download the nexus mod manager, but the improve graphics mods here are better than the HD pack

I didn't see any improvements with the HD texture pack, I think it improved the small things that aren't that noticeable in the first place.

Ah ok :) Well I'm going to give it a whirl and see how it goes. I'm also liking the idea of the Steam Workshop they offer there. Loads of nice mods on there to choose from!

There are a lot of videos of YouTube dedicated to mods out there, this guy seems to cover most of the worthwhile ones out there

Stay away from mods and the CK! Once you step in, there's no turning back

Another good source of mods is also http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/

Think I might start by finding my feet in the game first before I pile a load of mods onto it lol!

There really is no turning back. I started using mods with Morrowind, and... Yeah. I'll just be looking for ONE mod, and then five babies come out of that mod. Turns out, they want to come with me.

I agree with people saying that once you start using mods, you'll never go back, however for the first playthrough I suggest playing without mods. Also, you have to be a little careful when using mods, they might cause instabilities and crashes.

So, have all you guys played a lot of the Elder series? I've played a bit of Oblivion in the past but that's all really.

I have played all the main series games. Started with Oblivion, but prefer Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Skyrim.

Yeah, I love mods, but I try to always play the "normal" game first. One, to see it in it's original form. And two - so I know what I might want to change with mods. :D

Most of the mods I use are crafting ones. I love to make stuff only if I am using mods to add more stuff into the game.

I should try making a Scar character... BE PREPARED!

Most of the people here have been playing since morrowind. I started with Oblivion myself, I was too young to appreciate morrowind when it came out

Morrowind came out when I was too young, as well. Sadly... I also didn't own an Xbox or PC that could play it. I had a PS2.

The HD texture pack is free and you can turn it on or off at will before launching Skyrim. It does make the game look slightly better but at the cost of performance as expected. I personally do not use the official HD texture pack because there are some graphical problems with it such as missing textures.
