New SSD. How to transfer everything over as painlessly as po

Post » Sun Aug 21, 2011 8:28 am

Just got a new SSD.

What should I do to get everything from my old HDD to this new SSD, as easily as possible? I want a complete system image, so when I put the new SSD in my rig, it was like nothing ever happened.

I'm really worried about messing up my music library, or Steam library.

You can use http://clonezilla.org/ to make a complete image byte for byte. You would need to use a Windows installation/repair disc to fix the MBR. But thats easy.

Though I usually believe in starting with a clean OS every 6-8 months anyway. Install Windows on the new SSD and it would be as simple as copying and pasting over all of the music and steam library. The biggest thing to make sure to get over are your My Documents folder. Most games will save there, but some will save to random places, like the hidden appdata folder. (To get there just type %appdata% into Windows Explorer)

How much data do you have to transfer and how big is the SSD?

I just realized how much of a geek I am. The first thing I thought of when I saw SSD is Super Star Destroyer.
