New Vegas Crashing after selecting New Game : Fallout: New Vegas

Basically my game would play the intro video for 1-2 seconds and then suddenly crash. I read this topic http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1142283-loading-crash/ and practically tried everything suggested. I even attempted to do a few things suggested here http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes/ and it still didn't work. Please help, I got this game as a gift for my 18th bday and I would like to start enjoying it.

Extra info: I moved the intro video (.bik file) to see if that was the problem but I guess it isn't. Now when I hit new game it shows the loading screen for 1-2 seconds and it proceeds to crash again.

Your video drivers appear to be out of date. People have bee suggesting catalyst driver set 10.10e and the hotfix- though 10.11 is out as well (doesn't include some fixes in the hotfix for 10.10e), Since you have already tried steam's game cache validation that is the only thing I can think of. Though I would be surprised if it were a driver issue if this had not had an effect on your previous playthrough.

I don't see 10.10e though just 10.11 but there's a good chance it's still newer than what you have. Computer vendors can be a little slow about releasing graphics driver updates espescially for laptops- there's always small chance you will need to roll back to a previous if they don't work.

I think the "catalyst software suite" will pull down the required files for you. It looks to be a web-based installer.

Get the 10.10e driver from here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1901/AMD_Catalyst_10.10e_Hotfix.html

It worked perfectly fine for me.

EDIT: Do not get the 10.11 from the AMD site - it's an older driver than the 10.10e I pointed to you above!

^ Ah thanks- the ATI/AMD driver site even seems to recommend the version 10.10 driver set over 10.11 but I could not find a download link.

It now seems to be fixed, although Im not sure of the EXACT fix, but heres what I did prior to it working (beyond the intro)

First, go here..

Then follow all the appropriate changes and make them accordingly to this guide in your fallout_default.ini file (NOT the fallout.ini like in F3)

Doing this seems to have solved THIS problem. I was going to do this anyway, but hadnt got round to it. (Wanted to fire up the game and see what it was like)

It has helped some people. Up to you if you want to try it. It does state that some other programs
like divx or powerdvd might not work after you run this program. You might need to reinstall them.
This might be a good way to tell whether or not a codec confliction is involved.

Can you play the bink video? use vlc to try the bink video located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data\Video.
You can download VLC here: www.videolan.org/vlc/
Did you try verifying the game cache?
Do you play anyother games (steam or non-steam) that work well?

Something else you might try. Change the compatibility mode for fallout 3 new vegas. Find fallout 3 new vegas in your steam directory.
Right click the main exe (falloutnv.exe) and goto the compatibility tab. Click the checkbox and try windows xp service pack 3 or other modes.
Then right click falloutnv.exe and select "run as admin".

Also you have a laptop. You have it plugged into the wall while your trying fallout 3 new vegas? Make sure there are no obscure power saving feature as well like adaptive etc.

I'm also using a lenovo ideapad y560 (i7, 64-bit, 4gb, ati radeon 5700) and I've got the exact same problem!

I hit new game, the video starts and it 2 seconds later it crashes. Interestingly enough the game worked before the patch.

Hey Filledwithowls - do you have any of the Lenovo software still installed on the laptop? Mine came with an application called Onekey Theater. That may be the problem.

Using Debugger Diag I did a memory dump of the CTD and (with the help of a friend) foudn the following info:

Basically it looks like this DLL ActiveDetect32.dll is causing a problem. I went ahead and did an uninstall of OneKey Theater, did a reboot and then ran the Fallout launcher as administrator. I was able to start a new game, get past the intro movie and make it to the begining of the game.

I didn't get much farther than that (I am at work) but I figured that this might be something to consider.

1 - remove OneKey Theater
2 - run as administrator
