New Vegas Crashing Entire Computer

Post » Sat Feb 05, 2011 11:56 pm

I've seen plenty of posts about crashes on this forum, but haven't seen one that mentions my issue. Apologies if this is a duplicate.

New Vegas isn't just crashing my computer to the desktop. It's completely turning my PC off.

First, my specs.

Windows 7 Ultimate: 64 Bit Edition
Geforce GTX 260-216 896MB
Intel® Core()TM) 2 Duo CPU E8500@3.16 GHZ
4 GB DDR2-800 RAM
850 Watt Power Supply

My first thought, naturally, was that a crash of this magnitude indicated a hardware problem. So I installed a couple of programs to monitor temps on the various items in my CPU. All my temps are running fine. I've also run programs like Prime95 and 3DMark for extensive periods of time with no issues.

I've tried the various fixes out there for New Vegas crashes. I've tried running in Windowed mode. I've tried turning off Autosave and avoiding Quick Saves. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both from disc and from steam. I've tried running in Windows XP Service Pack#3 Compatibility Mode. I've tried both rolling back to older video card drivers and using new ones. I've tried the various DLL/Ini fixes that modders have created, which if nothing else do a great job of fixing the extreme choppiness of the game. Nothing eliminates the problem, though avoiding auto/quick save reduces the frequency.

It should be noted that my wife does computer technical support for a living and has been helping me trouble shoot. Neither of us are novices when it comes to maintaining or fixing a computer.

Right now the average time before a CPU crash is 30 minutes.

No other game that I have causes this issue. I can chug along on Dragon Age or Starcraft 2, for example, endlessly without issues.

I'm highly disappointed and unsatisfied with both Bethesda and Obsidian. Both have deserved reputations for releasing very high quality and enjoyable games that I've spent literally hundreds of hours on. Sadly, both also have a reputation for extremely buggy game releases. I've waded through these issues before, but nothing that comes close to the magnitude of the problems that New Vegas has given me.

Don't get me wrong. I love the games that Betheda releases, but I think I'll buy them about 6 months after release date from now on to get the finished product. I'm stunned that a game would be released in this state that is, on a very modern, powerful, well-maintained computer.

Any error messages at all? On start-up? in windows error logs?

I've been having the same problems. It seems to happen whenever a new dialog box comes up, whether it be inventory, talking to an npc, accessing a computer, or hell, even when the name of the place you just discovered comes up. Upon restarting I get the option to send an error report to microsoft, and further investigation from that points out that the restarts are a way of preventing data corruption or loss in the event of a driver error.

I got the updated drivers from nVidia, the patches for the game itself, turned off AA, bloom, HDR, , anisotropic filtering, etc, but still no luck.

I've also tried switching everything to low / off and running it in Windows mode. Played 40 minutes today and it's just BSODed again.

This 'game' is doing serious harm to my PC. As another poster explained here, the game obviously affects different PC builds in different ways - some PCs are able to withstand the 'stress' that this game inflicts on their system, and others buckle under it. This is entirely the fault of the developer for not stress testing their game against a range of different popular hardware configurations.

If Obsidian do not address this issue in the forthcoming patch, there's no way in hell I'm going near another one of their 'products'. I feel that Bethesda must also take responsibility for this disastrous release. Surely as publishers they must have some influence on quality control? (or in this case, the complete lack of it!)

Hi nocoolnamejim.

I am quite sure this is a GPU problem, i have the exact same problem on other games. (Napoleon: Total War, Cities XL 2011, Sid Meiers Railroads.) There is a little eeeeee noise coming from my computer and sooner or later it reboots. My advice to you is to go see a computer technician, reinstalling your OS or upgrading/downgrading doesn't make a difference. I upgraded to 7 from Vista and it still ain't fixed, so that's how i figured it out. Do you still have a guarantee on your computer? If so go to the store you bought it in and demand them to take look at it. If you bought the parts separately demand them to look at your computer.

This indicates it's a laptop?

If your computer restarts like that it's typically due to a few things:

  • Your power supply is not adequate enough to provide the power needed to your system when running under heavy load (keep in mind you lose something like 10% capacity over the course of a year). I doubt that's your case.
  • It could be faulty memory. I doubt that's your case.
  • It could be outdated drivers. And seeing your NVidia driver revision @ 8.17.11.9745, being 197.45 or around that release, I am more than inclined to think you should update your drivers first, especially since Nvidia has been adding in improvements to fix issues in Oblivion and Fallout.
  • It could also be that it trips the/a watchdog timer which fully resets your computer if the graphics card locks up (which might be due to the driver bugs).

I found some info, I was getting BSOD's too, and I used this utility (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html) to read the dump files they create. Every single BSOD that occurred while playing NV pointed to my soundcard, which was an old audigy soundblaster 2. I've since taken out the card and so far I haven't had any crashes.

I had nothing but problems with the sound and have the same
card... I think it's time for an upgrade to a card that's new
and supported by win7 64-bit... I think that's the main
problem- because when I look at the sound device in
control panel the only option available is 16-bit audio
and it's a 24-bit card... I couldn't get the sound to
work at all until I changed the output to 2.1 stereo..
and the card is supposed to support dolby 5.1 - 7.1..

just a thought..

Ah, I totally forgot about that. The newer Windows by default hide the BSODs by rebooting straight away. I always turn them back on via the Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings window and deselect the "Automatically restart" option. That way whenever you do get a BSOD it will be back in your face instead of flashing by and missing it.

Good to know you managed to find that the sound card is most likely the culprit.

First off, thank you to everyone who replied so quickly with suggestions. I really appreciate it. You all make good points about the blue-screens, but in my case, I don't get either a blue-screen or a reboot. I get a shut down that requires a hard reboot, in other words I have to press the power button to start the computer up again. Event viewer gives no clues either.

Oh, and yes, I know the driver nvidia is an old one. The game shuts down my computer far more often on the most recent driver, that's why I rolled back. I did look at the sound driver and discovered that it was indeed outdated, so I installed the most recent version, started a new game with auto-save off and no quick-save, d3d9-fix applied, and started playing. It lasted for about an hour, then the computer shut down again, out of nowhere.

Back to square one, I guess...

I have the same problem, BSOD and complete hardware freezes. Both seem to be sound related.

I updated everything that could be updated, and followed all hints and trix I could find here. When nothing worked I contacted Bethesda's support with error-reports and DxDiag. Got the following reply:

Hello,

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you, and we are working on fixing the problems associated with the game as soon as possible. If you have any additional question or concerns feel free to contact us.

Thank you

Since they don't even try with the normal reply "reinstall..., update..., hardware...." etc.etc. my only conclusion is that it is game related and the only thing to do is to wait for future patches. At least when you updated everything you can and diabled old soundcards and so on.

Make sure you provide feedback about the Nvidia driver over on their http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showforum=213.

A shut down out of nowhere from one moment to the next (no freezes or weird effects) typically points to a power supply or heat problem. Since you mention it happened an hour in, it could have been a heat issue. If you can, try to monitor the temperature on your graphics card and system during play. See if that stays within tolerances.
If you have problems with software or drivers you would sooner run into crashes to the desktop or BSODs or similar results.

The problem with these kind of symptoms is just that it is quite difficult to remotely try to troubleshoot. :\

When you hard boot the system again, upon OS load does it show you the list of options (safe mode.....normal boot etc)? Are there any indications in the event log of a unexpected shutdown? If so, the issue might be driver or hardware related since something is causing a shutdown outside the OS which can indicate an issue with hardware. Ashemedai is correct that this type of behavior usually indicates a temperature problem or a faulty power supply. A CPU that reaches a specific temp threshold will cut itself off in order to protect itself against burn out. What program are you using to monitor the temperatures? You should also take a look at voltages too. Are you overclocking anything? I would recommend you run tests on your system for faults and stability. Prime95 or intel burntest are a couple programs to start off with.

Another thought I would like to add is are you sure your os isnt giving you a blue screen. Is there anything in the event log about Critical system failures? Are there mini dumps in the windows directory? You can disable the auto restart feature before a blue screen by right clicking My Computer->properties and selecting advanced system settings. From there click startup and recovery and uncheck the auto reboot checkbox. Perhaps your computer is shutting down rather than rebooting. Just a thought.

THis is a unique problem that probably has nothing to do with fallout 3 new vegas. PC gaming is different from XBOX or PS3 gaming. XBOX and PS3 all have static hardware that go through rigorous testing before they are sent to market.
Many PCs are built by do-it-yourself system builders and have different hardware from many different manufacturers. I doubt that many of these PCs go through much testing for either faults or stability. Bethesda cannot be held accountable for all the possible permutations of every PC system configuration out there NOR could they account for them. Not to say XBOX or PS3 systems DONT have their problems but the PC market has always been a challenging market for troubleshooting games.

This isnt directed at anyone who has posted here. I'm just responding to bakedpotatoes comment.

Look at how stable unreal engine and even EA's games (of all companies) are! If Epic games can make a rock solid engine that works FLAWLESSLY on most systems then gamesas/Gamebryo sure as hell can!

"runs FLAWLESSLY on most systems" is a bold statement to make. Your trying to talk statistics which youo cant gauge just by reading forums. Be interesting to see how many PC users DONT have problems running F3 new vegas.

i am runnign a server operating system called windows server 2008 R2 x64 and dual booting with windows 7 pro x64. I also have a windows 7 pro x64 machine as well. I cna play any unreal engine based games flawlessly on even my server operating system with the latest nvidia drivers, my windows 7 machine plays them flawlessly as well.

I also have a server 2008 R1 x64 system (media center pc in the living room) and it works the same.

and FO3 and FONV crash the same on all them. Nothing new. even running windows 7 on the dual booted R2 machine has the same result.

How is that unreal engine can even work on a server OS which game companies normally discourage, but gamebryo based games like the stuff gamesas makes can't even work on a normal windows 7 OS without problems.

The only people that are not having any problems are people with virgin windows xp 32 bit installs and ATI cards. or people which barebones gaming OS installs with not even aero or klite installed. You shouldnt have to have to do ANYTHING to get the games to work. they just should.

If a company is good enough and has a good enough technical team it would.

Locate your falloutnv.ini file, under your profile,

At the top, in the [general] section, add this item:

iNumHWThreads=2

For me, I have this as =6, since i have a i7 980x, but as with Fallout3, many people with crashing reported that setting their thread count to 2, or even 3, would fix issues for quad cores, or even dual cores (setting to 2)

Also, find the entry down in the INI:
bMultiThreadAudio=0

If it's on 0, change it to 1. If it's on 1, change it to 0

Gettting way off topic. Your crashing his computer is shutting down. Apples and oranges. Anyway your still talking statistics but you seem to basing them off of your own personal experiences. Again it would be interesting to see how many people dont have issues with F3 NV. Incidentally I dont have any issues other than some performance stuttering. I know of others who DONT have problems either.

LOL games should just work!?! I love it. Oh if only it were that easy.

I've played a ton of games from different sizes of dev teams. I've even played games made by ONE PERSON that were much more stable than gamesas's thousands of team members.

No game I have ever played has been more unstable the FO3 and FONV.

I was a beta tester for cities xl and it was more stable then FO3 and NV.

I alpha tested a very complex MMO for a dev company made of only 15 people and it was way more stable then FO3 and NV.

If you want to fully excuse a company with bad QA that be my guest. They had 3 games to get the engine tech right and they failed.

I am just very upset at this and I have waited a very long time for both titles and I love bethesda softworks as a game company. I still do. I want to see them succeed and improve.

Yes, it shows the list of SafeMode, Normal Mode, et cetera.

I mentioned in my first post that I've run Prime95, but I wasn't very specific about it. So just to let yo know what we (=me and wife) have done so far, here's the specifics:

I use CPUID HWMonitor to check temps. Prime95 runs for hours on my CPU without a single error and the temps on either core never go above 65C. Then I ran FutureMark, with the Win7 compatibility patch for best results, on the GPU and the temp never went over 70C and there were no errors. Memtest is clean. I am not over-clocking anything. The event log shows that absolutely nothing is wrong with either windows or my drivers, and the auto-reboot box has been unchecked since the OS was first installed. Rolled back to an earlier driver, after seeing several posts here saying that worked better. It did make it a bit better... it took longer before it crashed. Turned off auto-save, stopped using quick save, ran the game windowed -- it makes no difference. The game still shuts down my PC, more or less at random.

The worst part about all of the above is that it rules out everything except the power supply, the only component in the entire system that has never been flaky or unreliable. The thing it, this only happens with New Vegas... not with anything else. I would expect the PSU to collapse during the stress tests, or during other and more demanding games, if it's bad.

Next attempt:

There was a new patch released today. It has been installed and after seeing the thread where a few 260 owners confirmed that performance issues improved significantly with the new patch I'm updating the driver to the latest again, and then I'll have the wife test it for me, since I've become a bit too frustrated to want to make all that progress in the game just to lose it to a yet another crash. Though if the game works now I might not get the PC back... this could backfire!

UPDATE:

Well, I guess the good news is that I'll get my PC back... New Vegas crashed in full screen mode as well as in windowed mode.

I'm about ready to give up on this. Past a certain point the cost-benefit anolysis just doesn't add up. I think I've spent more time trying to make this game run, and run decently, than I've spent actually playing it. I'm really starting to question if it's worth it.

Have you tried a clean boot to windows and then play the game? By this i mean shutdown all the background programs and thrid party (non-microsoft) services. This can be done with msconfig.
Make sure all your drivers are up-to-date. Probably the more important ones at this point are the motherboard drivers. The sound card you should also look into. It sounds like you tried the video card driver.
When installing anything on your system make sure to run it "as admin" by right clicking.

What kind of motherboard do you have? Some BIOS have Temperature threshold warning, shutdown settings in them. Usually under PC Health or something similar.

IF you have another known good PSU kickin around you might try that also to rule out the supply.
