New Vegas messed up my GPU

that is hilarious. maybe save this for the off-warranty cards right.

yes I would never do this to a card under warranty it's idiotic... lol

There ain't anything for me to do about it anyway (warranty expired). Other than i'm ditching Nvidia. It seems their cards has a habit of making the stripes. I spoke to a friend who expirienced the same red stripes with his 8800GTX some time ago. And my fathers 7950GX2 also did stripes (Altough not the same stripes) and he isn't even gaming.

My 8800GTX worked just fine for many years. I only stopped using it when I upgraded my card to a newer 460. I have no complaints. :)

Of-course they are not hacking. I was just explaining that you have to understand how software uses commands that eventual turn into machine code using bits to tell the CPU what to do. The most that an application can do is a lot more then just caping the frames. look up www.exploit-db.com these are exploits that are happening everyday that normal people do to exploit all different applications. No matter what the software is there is a flaw in it somewhere and another software can cause it to have problems. Most of the time it is just minor things and the software can correct itself. It happens all the time though. I have done testing, coding, hacking, doing buffer overflows to gain control of a CPU. It's a amazing what you see happen. If you don't have a problem with Nvidia 9800 GTX crashing then please stop posting things that don't help. Please write possible solutions. My whole point was that I have the same problem as the person who started this thread. Since I have tried many things and no one can solve it or give any answer to it at all AND other people who have the same hardware as I do are having the same problem as me after playing this game (which I really was excited to play), it can't be left to "It's not software because software doesn't cause damage to hardware". The statement is not true and mis-directs the underlying problem. Fallout New Vegas demanded certain things from our graphic card that it couldn't handle causing it to mishandle the commands sent to the CPU which in turn caused overheating or the fan to turn off or a corruption in the BIOS which then makes the graphic card constantly have the same problem over and over even when the BIOS starts up. The weird thing is that once you get into safe mode then the display will stay fine without any problems. Only in this mode is it stable and no where else. I wish there is a way to flash the BIOS of the graphic card to update it, but I can't find any files that are updates to the BIOS.

bla bla bla... In short you are a god hacker... so fix the code then. After you fix the failing GPU on your stupid GFX card because of a flaw with the soldering material.

I have never in 15 years of working in the IT industry met a single person that was actually a "GOOD" coder or "GOOD" hardware engineer that thought they were anything but "just learning"... The people that spew the crap that you are spewing are the ones that I feel badly for, because they are so trapped in their own narcissistic little reality they believe everyone around them believes them. Also being as amazingly knowledgeable about this hacking / code as you are why is it you don't have a job that allows you to replace an obviously defective card?

In short stop making comments with no basis in the rest of our realities, they are NOT constructive and only serve to inflame an already bad situation. In my experience cards that show the stripes, or checkerboard patterns are failing from the same exact thing that causes the frigging RROD on Xbox360's. Reflow the card with a reflow station or a friggin oven.

Please stop. You still have not provided any help to this thread. If you have something constructive to say then I will listen and give it a try. Otherwise, I'm not on this forum to put up with this. I'm only looking for answers. Thank you.

Umm... I don't know where you have been, but software can break hardware. Try reading a CEH or CISSP book. You can send machine code to a CPU and cause something to burn up or over work itself. China and the US hack into each other and send machine code to the CPU to gain control or destroy a computer. Software can definitely cause hardware to break and my CISSP instructor did it in one of my classes 2 years ago to a computer in the room. These GPUs have their on CPUs and the software send machine code to it all the time. You can have a application demand more and accidentally exploit the software of the graphic card to tell the CPU to do something that it shouldn't do. Bethesda Softworks should have tested this, known about it, and if anything... notify all Nvidia users what their software DOESN'T work on a Nvidia 9800 GTX. If it says it should work on a Nvidia 9800 GTX then it should work with a Nvidia 9800 GTX.

You seem to have left a word I used out...."Game software". Unless you are suggesting the devs are hackers and out to destroy our rigs? I know hackers can and do do it, but I doubt we have anything to worry about with Bethesda/Obsidian was my point, not hackers.

Please read my post from before. I stated that I know they are not hacking, but software can be coded by accident to cause problems. You can obviously see all the graphical problems occurring with everyone's GPUs on this forum. The software could have caused the CPU of the graphic card to over work itself and in effect break it.

Wrong. There is no such thing as "overwork", only "underdesign". If the cooling system isn't adequate, that isn't the fault of the primary software, although resultant damage could be the fauit of the drivers / firmware that doesn't include adequate self-protective provisions.

I'm just going to agree with Gorath again. As far as I understand these things, he is again correct.

(Not saying I am right, but it's how I understand it until otherwise proven. Please educate me with proof and I'll happily change my stance. Excluding any malicious hacking type software. We are discussing legitimate games software here.)

Actually I have told you whats wrong, YOUR GPU IS DEAD FROM A DEFECT!!!. Stop blaming FO:NV for killing your GPU. My GTX280 has a known design defect resulting in thermal runaway, I can run the card up to 105c in a matter of seconds with furmark, should I blame furmark for making my GPU overheat NO! FFS My GPU died playing DA:O does that mean it's defective as well?!?!

If you are looking for people to jump on your whole FO:NV killed my GPU bandwagon I don't think you will find a very receptive audience on these forums. This thread should have been locked right after the OP posted his nonsense about the game killed his GPU.
