New Vegas = returned for full refund

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:47 am

-$60 for Bethesda, +$60 for me. It feels good to speak with my wallet, even if $60 is like spitting into the ocean.

I got a little grief from the game store clerk, but I was polite and firm and wouldn't take "no" for an answer, and he eventually accepted my return.

I won't go telling everyone to return their copies, but I will say that if your game or saves have become unplayable like mine, you might want to give it some thought. Personally I had the 360 version, and lost one of my followers (apparently for good) and was unable to complete a number of quests due to NPCs going missing. The "patch" today for the 360 is what really drove me over the edge, since it didn't fix any issues that I was having personally, and the only visible thing it did for me was cause me to freeze every single time on the wait screen and also when entering VATS.

Fallout New Vegas represents a fundamental flaw in the decision making process in the video game industry. When you let marketing completely drive your industry at the expense of quality, games like New Vegas are the result. I, for one, will not perpetuate this practice with my hard-earned money any longer. Produce good products that I can feel good about spending my money on, or I'll spend it somewhere else.

Sadly, I love the concept of New Vegas. The whole theme and feel of the game is fantastic, it's very unfortunate that it was executed so poorly that it's literally unplayable by such a huge portion of those that were early adopters.

I look forward to the day when my friends tell me New Vegas has been updated enough to be playable, so I can go buy a USED copy of it somewhere.

I hate to sound like "That guy", but I'm afraid that is your loss, sir.

There are many others way you could have played or gone about it than your current one in which glitches and bugs seemed to have messed it up. Furthermore, they just released a patch, so you could've seen if that worked for you first. I also hope you had it installed on the HDD like me.

Also, did you have the newer black Xbox 360 slim? That could be the one with more glitches, though I am not sure.

So far, the only glitches/bugs I've encountered ate auto-scrolling in the caravan, "auto-walking" after stopping and some deal with the boxing gloves and other such non-lethal weapons not actually knocking out enemies and NPCs, but killing them instead. That's about it.

So far, the only things I've seen that remains unfixed are the auto-walking issues and the boxing gloves. I haven't played Caravan again yet, to see if the auto-scrolling bugs remain.

Next time, if all else fails, just explore the wasteland instead or something. Or at least just save your copy until it's all patched up. It's still a good concept and a fun game when you don't encounter such problems. I'm loving it so far.

I was ecstatic when I saw there was a patch this morning. Unfortunately that only seemed to cause more issues, and fixed none of the ones I was having. Specifically whenever I tried to "wait" or tried to use VATS, my game would freeze requiring a hard boot to get it running again.

I wasn't able to install it to my HDD because I have an old Pro system with the 20g HDD, and not nearly enough space.

Ah, I see. That is understandable.

Either ways, I do hope you pick this up again at some point and play as well as enjoy it alongside the rest of us.

You seem to be a man of perhaps impeccable patience. If you are intent on waiting, then I would suggest waiting for the Game Of The Year edition (if that) or a similar version in which it is released with ALL DLC and ALL issues patched up.

Actually are there versions of some games sold that have content exactly the same as GOTY Editions, but without GOTY labeled on it? If there is, then when that comes out (Since, sadly I don't think New Vegas will make GOTY), you should by it as everything should be wonderfully resolved by then and it may be more to your liking and enjoyment.

Also, are you azurelite on the GameFAQs Fallout: New Vegas board?

Yup, that's me. I love the gamefaqs community :)

I'll definitely be picking up this game again, but I'll buy it used after the issues have been resolved. I want to PLAY the game, not sit around waiting for it to get fixed (hopefully).

And I wouldn't describe myself as a man of patience, but more a man of principal.

Ah, I see. So that's it. What will you play in the meantime then, if I may ask?

Also, I slightly disagree on the GameFAQs community. I used to love it until they all starting acting childish, having no sense of humor and generally act like /b/, [censored] in general and like people from Encyclopedia Dramatica.

Otherwise, I suppose it's good. They do have EXCELLENT Strategy Guides/Walkthroughs and FAQs, I'll say that much.

I agree with you. I was like this when Fallout 3 came out, but instead of returning it I did not play it until it was patched.

I don't understand.

The patches should be out soon.

You are returning a game, and fully expecting to buy it again later?

does not compute. :brokencomputer:

Even if you paid exaclty $60 for it and return it, and then get it again for $30. You are OUT A NEW copy and spent time+money to take it back (costs to drive to store and back, then back to store for used copy?).

Yeah I don't get it. Lets go and spend $120 on a game now, instead of $60. You should have just held on to it. What store did you get it from? If it was GameStop they sure as hell wouldn't have refunded you. And if they did that employee would probably be fired.

I am on the 360 as well and I'm not having any save issues. The patch this morning does not seem to have done anything either. But the game is still playable!

I have had the game since Tuesday and never had any problem, until today. I downloaded the patch and now every time I try to click on VATS the game freezes and requires a reboot. Does anyone know a way around this, as the game has become effectively unplayable.

Quite frustrated as I was really getting into it.

EDIT: I have the game on the xbox and I have installed it to the HDD.

I also have it for Xbox 360 and have it installed. I've never encountered VATS freezing on me pre-patch or post-patch.

Do you have the newer black slim Xbox 360? That might be it. I dunno.

I have an older xbox elite. Wonder if I go to an older save game if I will still have the same issue.

Sorry that svcks you had such a bad experience.

However to counter balance, I feel I need to post my positive experience from playing.

I've been playing for around 15 hours. Ive had no freezing, no save issues and I have the Gamestop pre-order DLC installed.
Only bug I've run across are scorpions sinking into the ground, so far. Although I've read about worse!

All in all I'm really enjoying my time playing this game, much more so than Fallout 3 and I loved that game. It svcks you were not able to stick around, but $60 is not anything to sniff at and if it wasn't working for you I'm not going to be one of those people who call you an idiot. Example: My friends all love ford I hate them, I've owned 3 ford cars and had nothing but problems, bought a honda and have been gold since. So there is nothing wrong with what you did. Just remember not everyone is having the same experience you are.

People will make much more of an effort to come here and let their problems be known than they will to come here and say they love the game.

OK if I go back to a save game that was created before the update was applied then it seems to work fine. It is a big sigh of relief as I havent lost that much stuff.

He "should" do whatever he thinks is best, which is what he did.

Also, just like every other person on the planet, the GameStop employees are regular human beings, and if you treat them nicely, they'll work with you in issues like this. I've returned plenty of new opened games to GameStops in my day.

I can understand the decision to return the game, and I think voting with your wallet is important.

I am curious - and this is why I'm posting - about your Fallout error experience. Someone should really make a spreadsheet with errors checked against console versions. Maybe there would be some useful information.

It's actually pretty easy to understand. Imagine you bought a car. You take the car home. Now normally, you expect any car to have a few idiosyncrasies: One tire loses air quicker than the others, takes a little longer to start in cold weather, the gearshift handle feels a little cheaply made, and/or you have one warning light that's comes on briefly and goes off because it's just a little too sensitive. These aren't major issues. You'd be able to drive this car and 90% of the time, these problems wouldn't stop you from enjoying the drive.

Now in contrast... Imagine you bought a car. You take the car home. On the drive home, you find out that transmission likes to hang when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. And when it does shift, the clutch drops so hard it stalls the engine out half the time. (It's the auto model in this case, so you're in trouble.) The windshield wiper sprayers shoot out coolant from the engine. The steering wheel is difficult to maneuver and is shaky at best. And for some reason the radio will only work from presets, these presets being all political talk radio.

How quickly do you think you'd try your best to turn that car back around and get your money back... come hell or high water?

Now the car may have had many other good points, but these problems make it unusable and not enjoyable at the moment. This doesn't mean that won't be fixed later on, but no one wants to pay full price for a broken new car now. But, they'll pay a lesser price for a slightly older fixed and working car later.

This is the same situation. Many people ended up buying the latter example in their minds. The company released a horribly buggy product and they should be outrightly punished for it. I've experienced many bugs that are very obvious and should have been caught well before this point. They rushed the product to meet the release date to take advantage of hype buying, since most people don't have the option to immediately return a broken product.

So my graduations to the original poster for getting a full refund. If more people did the same, maybe we be able to return to the old days where you could return any game within 30 days for all your actual money back. Gaming companies need to be punishable and held liable for the products they produce once again. Hopefully then, they'd realize their their marketing and business staff are a bunch of idiots who don't know a damn thing about producing anything of quality and just know how to screw and con people over.

Anyway the only difference between a new and old copy is the age of the disc. The data is the same.

Your loss. bugs will be fixed. One of my fav games every is STALKER for PC, bugs and all its an amazing series. I can deal with some bugs, with seperate save slots, and wait for patches, if thats all it takes for you to give up on a game that is much better the F03 is, then good for you I guess.

I have seen it also and believe this to be the case - he seems to be looking for absolution over this and it simply isn't going to happen. Within a few days this argument will be thankfully purged into the lower pages of the forums and forgotten.

I think returning a game over bugs Bethesda says they are working on and will correct shortly is, in my view, the height of impatience and lacking in understanding on how video games work. Anyone who thinks that Marketing "owns" the video game industry also lacks understanding on how these companies work, and most of the rest of the arguments smack of bitterness and are devoid of hard facts.

I for one am loving this game, and while I also believe in voting with your wallet, it helps to cast a vote that will Matter. In this case it won't, as Bethesda will count these returns as "lost cause customers anyway" - there is no hope of making them happy. And folks like this crop up with Every video game, even the mega-hit titles. Oblivion had a Very rough launch too, and now look at it. :)

Those who return the game now are missing out, more power to those of us who kept it and are now getting patches to fix the bugs. :)

It wasn't Bethesda's fault. It was Obsidian that didn't properly test the game. I guess you could say Bethesda should of watched over it more, or had a bigger hand in things, but It was Obsidian.
