[Relz] Mr. New Vegas's Secret Stash

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:41 am

In light of the success of my Fallout 3 mod, "More Where That Came From," people have been asking me to release a follow-up for Mr. New Vegas's insanely repetitive radio station, and so I have. Available now at the New Vegas Nexus, I present "http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37029", a mod that adds (with the help of Jarol and gamerzworld's extender .esps) 60 new songs to Mr. New Vegas's playlist. And not just any songs, but the songs referenced in the names of the games's quests. Head on over to http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37029 and you will find the mod broken into three parts. The songs were culled from various public archives such as the 78RPM Preservation Project.

Specifically, this mod adds the music that served as the inspiration for the following quests:

Insanely popular More Where That Came From mod? That would be an understatement :). Glad to see you working on New Vegas, Downloading as I type.

Will this be the entire selection, or do you plan on adding more tracks later? Either way, it's a definite improvement over vanilla.

BTW: Welcome to the forums, http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg :hehe:

I'm probably going to add two additional packs of 20 songs, but these were all the ones referenced in quest titles that I could get my hands on.

Fantastic! I'm already using the 100 songs from your mod in New Vegas currently, but it would be much better to have lots of songs that fit the NV setting better. And that they're all referenced in quests makes it even better!

If you're looking for suggestions, I think these songs from your previous mod could fit in:

19. "A Hundred and Sixty Acres" by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters
39. "I'd Like to Give My Dog to Uncle Sam" by Ozzie Waters
58."Don't Fence Me In" by Roy Rogers

I would've mentioned 10. "Jingle, Jangle, Jingle" by Kay Kyser and His Orchestra but yeah... :D

Of course more 'new' songs would be nice too.

And thus, did Radio New Vegas become relevant again! CONLRAD tided me over, but I miss Mister New Vegas' sweet, sultry vocals.

Very glad to see you work on this, I was hoping you would make something similar to the GNR mod because this game needs it desperately. It's awesome that you are putting in tracks that the game references in quests / dialogues that for whatever dumb reason aren't in the game to begin with. Needs "In the Ghetto" though, heh.

You could always add the More Where That Came From mp3s to http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34999 instead, it works very well.

Very nice!

But are there no rights issues? All of these are public domain, I presume?

The packaging is a bit confusing, and the readme doesnt explain anything about the different esps from the additional. I assume, having used the FO3 version, you only need SecretStash60.esp (Maybe this one should use a similar name structure as the others: RNVExtended[60]v3b1.esp instead of SecretStash60.esp) and not any of the other esp files if you want to use all 60 songs.

I'd add some clearer installation instructions, or you can bet you'll get people reporting bugs because they have all 3 esps active. :P

Right. All you need is SecretStash60.esp if you're going to use all three currently existing track packs.

Actually, there is a way.

  • Download http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36835's mod which lets you create a custom RNVExtender of however many songs you want up to 9999 songs. (In this case you'll want 160 for both mods)
  • Then unzip the Secret Stash somewhere different than its default location.
  • Go to where you unzipped it in Explorer, ctrl-a to select all the files, then right click and 'Rename' them all at once to 'Temptrack' or something like that.
  • Go you your rnvextend folder and do the same thing (ctrl-a and rename) to all the mp3 files in there.
  • Delete the mono.ogg files in both locations. Copy over the Secret Stash mp3 files from that temporary directory.
  • Use Jarol's renamer utility to rename the tracks automatically and generate new oggs.
  • In this case it should leave you with files named 1.mp3-160.mp3 and the corresponding oggs.
  • Now load up the RNVExtender.esp you created with Jarol's app--it defaults to your Data directory and is named ExtendedNVRadio.esp.

Of course, the reason I'm making a RNV playlist is because I don't think More Where That Came From fits the New Vegas aesthetic--even though I do like the songs, obviously. But to each their own.

...
If you're looking for suggestions, I think these songs from your previous mod could fit in:
...

I'm trying for no overlap between the sets. That's why, for instance, I went with a different artist for "Someone to Watch Over Me," which is already in the More Where That Came From. And one of the bonus tracks I added is an alternate take of 160 Acres which should pleasantly surprise when it comes up.

The one thing I've noticed thus far is some songs are really, really quiet.

On this, there seems to be no happy medium. When they made Fallout: New Vegas, they apparently broke the code that quieted down songs during dialogue. To compensate, they reduced the volume of all the ingame radio stations. Fallout 3 had native songs of about 94db. New Vegas's songs are about 79db. I've increased the volume in all of them to about 81db and I'll upload the new versions today. If they still seem too quiet to you, I recommend downloading http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php and adjusting them to your personal liking.

Just an FYI. This wreaked havoc with Wrye Flash until I opened up the SecretStash60.esp in the GECK and just saved it.

Doing that caused it to go from a 47kb size file to a 12kb size file though. So not sure if it screwed anything up, just passing it on.

Seems to work ok in game, haven't tested 100% yet though. Thanks for the extra songs!

FYI, Track Pack 4 for the mod is out. It adds one more quest song that I missed on the first goround, "Veni, Vidi, Vici" by the Gaylords. (I'd assumed that the quest title was just a reference to Caesar's quote, but what do you know, it's also the name of a song from the 50's.) The other 19 tracks are either from artists already in the game or similar to those who are, in the spirit of More Where That Came From. Including new versions of "Maybe" and "A Kiss to Build a Dream On". Head over to http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37029 to grab it.
