My News Years Resolution

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 6:59 pm

So I am a notorious restarter. However I really want to create and have a character for a very long time. So from now until January 1st I will be taking arguments, comments, ideas, ect for this character. Im leaving it wide open to discussion as far as what race I should pick, what skills, what birthsign, ect. Then at midnight of near yearsI will post up what I decide to go with. Hopefully this topic stays relevant until then. Let the discussions begin...

The only thing I can really say is don't be boring like everyone else and pick from the same handful of birthsigns. The world needs more variety, not everyone is going to be born under the sign of the Mage/Atronach/Lady.

Perhaps use your actual birth month to decide your sign? Saves the trouble of picking it yourself.

Try to make a character as close to your real self as possible. You can't change yourself in real life, so you shouldn't change yourself in-game. ;)

Or you could go the other way and make a character that is your complete opposite. Let's say you are a large, physically active man. Make a Breton woman devoted to academia who relies on illusion magic and sneak to study Ayleid ruins undetected. When she is forced into confrontation, have her summon a meat shield and retreat into invisibility. See how long you can go without ever having to hit anything.

Or you could always be a Bosmer tank.

I made a character that was a copy of me in-game and it was TERRIBLE.
I'm also a restarter so my next character I decided to make the complete
opposite of me..

It worked. :celebration:

Just make a main character that does everything, all the quests and levels up every skill. If you try and roleplay stuff you'll get bored faster :P

Ive already put myself in the game, done opposites. Im more looking just to see what peoples favorites things are and who can make the best case for why I should play that way.

Well, you know me, I play as assassins.

Check out my huge post over in the "I Want To Be An Assassin" thread somewhere on this page, and you'll see the build I suggest the most. (I personally use the Assassin default class as my main, at this point, and an Imperial over Khajiit, but I wrote that post from a stats. standpoint, not RP)

Oh Zak! I know you have wrestled with restartisits for quite some time now, and I wish you the best of luck.

I suspect you know what works for me. I go for a gimped, challenging character who is rather opposite of myself. I then travel with her as an unseen mentor. This includes routine conversations, disagreements, arguments and everything else that one might expect in any relationship. You have done most of what is in the game, so if your character begins to go astray, you may or may not be able to coax them onto a smarter path. At any rate, you shouldn't mind if your character does not attempt to 'do everything' since you have seen it all.

Bobg is another player who does not suffer from restartitis. Like my character, his character is a powerful personality in her own right and bobg simply travels along with her, occasionally offering advice. And occasionally his character listens. One difference between us is that bobg plays dead is dead.

It seems mirrocu is another player who happily plays a 'permacharacter'. I'm not sure what mirrocu's secrets or techniques are, but it is clear they work.

Again, best of luck!

I am going to Amend this as well. I have had a hell of a hard time with Restartitis. I think I want to make an assassin. I vow to keep this guy until Skyrim... any ideas for a roleplay? I want to use a weird birth sign as well. Thanks.

Sorry for butting in your thread Zak, its just that this is relevant for me too.

This suggestion may be taken as a joke (it is, sort of...), but it may be a hint of how to possibly come up with a character that's different from what you normally play. Morrowind players will recognize the following build...

Fargoth
Race: Bosmer Male
Class: Commoner
Birthsign: The Thief
Attributes: Personality, Endurance
Major skills: Hand-to-hand, Sneak, Athletics, Speechcraft, Mercantile, Security, Blade. (Alternative substitutions would be Acrobatics and Block; these skills are taken directly from the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:NPC_Classes listing for Commoner.)

The birthsign would be your option. I picked the Thief, since it seems to fit Fargoth's character (and what his likely occupation would be.)

The idea is for roleplaying. You take an unlikely "hero" character, somebody you already know from another context, and you put him into the role of "hero," and find out what the world looks like from his point of view.

Maybe... Fargoth doesn't look like he could even step out of a city. Though if I remember correctly he gets some good prices at the stores.

here's a build that I posted on the 'I want to learn to play an assassin' thread. I built her strictly for roleplay purposes so the decisions I made are not optimal. Her setup is:

Race: Dunmer – Because of their reputation as sixual beings.
Class: Courtesan – I just like the way it sounds for the character build
Birthsign: The Lover – Mooncalf gives the ability to paralyze a target for 10 seconds with a kiss, at the expense of 100 pts of Fatigue. A little gimped, to be sure, but I don't want her to be too powerful.
Spec: Stealth – Of Course.
Fav. Attr: Intelligence & Personality – Again, chosen because they fit the roleplay. Agility & Personality would also work.
Major Skills:
Alchemy – She relies on potions and poisons for her craft. Sure it levels fast, but I’m not overly concerned with that for the roleplay.
Illusion – The single best school of magic imho. Being able to charm, frenzy, paralyze, or command fits with who she is. Nightvision and the ability to disappear at will are nice bonuses.
Speechcraft – Because her particular brand of assassin gets great mileage out of high dispositions.
Acrobatics – Years of training gives her the ability to access rooftops when she needs to. And what client doesn’t want an acrobat in the bedroom?
Sneak – Another skill that levels incredibly fast (especially with a stealth specialization), but it just fits the roleplay.
Marksman – Because there are rare times when she needs to attack from range, and the practice of archery engages both her body, and her mind.
Blade – As a last resort, she always keeps an enchanted dagger concealed on her person.

Hope it helps.

Try to make a character as close to your real self as possible.

My advice is the exact opposite of this. Playing "as oneself" is absolutely the most boring thing a player can possibly do, in my opinion. For a roleplayer in particular it is a guaranteed recipe for restartis.

I see 3 awesome ways to play Oblivion-
1. Mystic archer with drain speed bow (we all know who that is......)
2. Master level mage who uses the area destruction and a heap of dremora lord conjuration spells.
3. Role play a naked man who hides under bridges and stabs people who pass by. (Solofront's crazy character)

Zak what happened to that imperial you started? Seemed like a cool class I've never actually used an imperial now that I think about it.
When I make a new character my biggest challenge is mixing armor to look cool. Right now my dark elf has iron guantlets/boots fur greaves/hat with an elven cuirass looks cool to me.

Someone mentioned an archer character before I think marksman is fairly fun, just don't like that I can't improve the speed the character knocks an arrow.

In that case, might I suggest a self sufficient Nord Ranger type character? In fact, I'm in the process of trying to create one.

For example, someone that wears light armour, uses a bow to hunt for food and either an axe/mace/sword for up close. Alchemy would have to be included imo, as any character living in the wild needs it (again, in my own opinion).

I'm not overly fond of basically building a fully functioning character for people, as there are many different ways to build custom classes and I know you and I use different methods. But the basics are there, and you could flesh them out if you wanted.

Hunter characters make for the best RP for me. So if you simply do a Hunter RP with a Nord, it may work well.

Well, I think everyone knows my type of characters: natural spirits/faeries, custom race that is distantly related to Bretons and Nords, very tiny but very strong magically, archers or spell casters.

Also, I tend to restart a lot because I enjoy the development of characters rather than simply wandering through the world. That's just me, though, and it's a bit different than restarting due to being disappointed with the character, per se (I have never really been disappointed with a character except perhaps for the first one or two used to learn the game).

Won't we be seeing a ton of Nords in Skyrim? :D

Today I tossed around the idea of a concept I have termed "Blade Runner":

Breton (F)
Steed
Magic
Speed, Strength
Alteration, Athletics, Blade, Conjuration, Illusion, Light Armor, Illusion
