I agree; play whatever you want. But do it this way:
1) choose a type (the link above is a good starting point), develop a backstory and stick with it. Place limits on yourself and role-play. For example, right now I'm running an archer/thief. My parents were trappers who were killed by bandits. That is to say, my father was a trapper; my mother was a hedge-witch who tried to teach me magic. Unfortunately, the only spell I was ever any good at was a simple healing spell (mostly because it was the only one that I thought was the least bit useful). Mom taught me all about herbalism and Dad taught me how to make and repair anything I needed. My thieving skills I picked up on my own, lol.
2) Go against the grain: Conventional wisdom (such as the above link) would dictate that I be a wood-elf if I wish to be an archer. Instead, I'm a Nord. Just because my race seems to be attached to big unwieldy pieces of metal (personally I think it's about over-compensating, lol), just mean that I have to buy into it.
3) Don't fast travel if at all possible!!!!! I did that my first run-through and didn't get to see what an amazing world I lived in.
Hope this helps.
