Next Xbox to be unveiled at E3 2012

"A 'high-ranking industry source at Crytek' told the website that while specifications for the next console have not been finalized, Crytek is using Microsoft's DirectX 11 for next-gen development. The source says Microsoft will announce the new Xbox in the next year, likely at E3 2012."

"Meanwhile, the source also claims TimeSplitters 4 is currently in development using CryEngine 3 and is already being demoed internally."

Interesting news, as long as 360 games are fully backwards compatible of course.

This is all speculation, naturally. But it does seem likely that Microsoft is developing the next Xbox, even if it isn't to be released for another year or two.

Discuss. :)

A question: why is Microsoft doing all this crap for Xbox 360 and "revealing the future" as their conference was called if they're just going to put out a new console that soon?

I presume Kinect will be compatitable with the "Xbox 360 2/Xbox 720/other stupid names"

What an excellent find. I think we can be sure that games will be backward compatible given that it's one of the strengths of the 360's PC style hardware. What's more of a concern is that with cloudware will we at all see new hardware coming in the ways we've known? Games will run remotely so there go all compatibility concerns and the joys of boxes and hardware with it :-(

Maybe, but I'd say they're just as likely to put out something totally new with it... for $350. <_<

This. It also makes sense if 360 games are backward compatible, that way all Kinect titles released thus far would work on it.

The two things I would expect from the next Xbox would be a big jump in hardware capabilities and a different disc format. Likely Blu-Ray.

As for a name... How about... The Nextbox? :P

I'm happy as long as they put a harddrive back in by default. And do not [censored] change the joypad (except for the d-pad)!

They'll probably remove the Joypad altogether, it'll be fully controlled by waving your arms around.

I think this is a rumor, it's too soon for them to come out with another console especially when they have so much invested in the Kinect and I'll believe DirectX11 when I see in action.

The 360 came out in 05/06 if I remember correctly. We're at 5/6 years already so that by the time the "Awfulpunbox" comes out in will be like 8/9 years atleast in total which isnt that soon personally.

Like someone in another thread said, they should make it upgradeable! Either some feature that allows you to go to the store and pick up parts yourself, which can be easily swapped out, or you take the console to the store and get it upgraded there. Games could then have minimum specs.
Not sure how this would work out price-wise though. I reckon i'll end up buying a PC instead of the next gen console.
