NHL Thread #5

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:40 am

We reached the post limit on the 4th thread, so I figured it'd be a good time to start a 5th.

Personally, I think the confrence the Bruins are in is pretty weak, other than Tampa Bay. Still nice to see that the Habs are in it though, to keep that rivalry going strong!

Also, you guys want to do that thing like they do with the football thread, where you put the username, then that persons favorite team(s)? Let me know.

Gah, excuse the spelling on Realignment :P.

Should be a solid game for the B's against Winnipeg. 15-0-1? :D

The Penguins got their butts handed to them by the Bruins. I was at the game, and I couldn't believe Pittsburgh couldn't score on at least one of those 5-on-3s. Give credit to Boston and especially Thomas for stopping all of those shots.

Yea. Thomas had some good saves on those 5-on-3s but the Pens looked generally flat for a lot of it. Thomas did have a great game, though, no doubt, but I think that the Bs did a better job hustling overall. But damn, I must admit, I'm terrified every time I see Crosby or Malkin in the offensive zone with the puck. They have that "finishing ability" that the Bruins, until Seguin (and with the exception of Savard, perhaps) totally lacked. But they play great team defense, and by far are the best 5 on 5 team in the league, and by far carry the greatest goal differential in the league. If they started half as well as they're playing now, they'd be on pace for a record season.

As for realignment, I read a good article accentuating the good aspects of it, and it partially persuaded me.

Example:
The league is actually bringing back elements of previous eras with this new set-up. Back in the ‘70s the Bs and Flyers battled for the Cup and will be able to once again after not being able to under the current system. The new playoffs will produce finalists we’d never see with today’s way of doing it. The bad blood should also get amped up among the year after year rivalries that will get worse and meaner, much like the aforementioned era that produced incredibly intense hockey.

Wow, I never looked at it that way before. I think I might just start to warm up to this after all.

Of course, it feels like the NHL is simply trying to ensure that big everyone-cares-about markets meet for the cup, so they can see more $. I feel like this hurts the small market teams as much as it helps the big ones. Also, it seems to anticipate a move away from Pheonix.

I honestly though Phoenix would've moved before Atlanta did. It's only a matter of time, considering the fact that they went bankrupt.

Doucheman can only religiously vie for one unsustainable team at a time. :P

About the alignment, Detroit and Winnipeg are obvious losers, Detroit not going to the East as promised, Winnipeg being the only Canadian team in it's division and with Dallas and Nashvillr being there travel is gonna svck.

Even worse than seeing the Wings play boring teams like St. Louis, Nashville, and Columbus 500 times a season, is now the Wings get to see them even more often come playoffs time. Christ, what were these guys smoking when they came up with this alignment plan..

The other losers are quality teams within the same conference. You could have 2-3 teams in the same conference with the top point totals at the end of the year, but only one will make it out and into the final four teams playing for a cup.

Nucks are looking good.

Hoping they get another shot at the cup.

And what was all the hype with Colombus gonna come on top this season? I guess that fell flat.

If it's just a precautionary measure like they're saying it is, might not be that bad.

Last thing the league needs is to lose arguably their best player (at least, from last season)

Agreed. That hit looked more like a knee than anything. No one knows for sure what hit it was. All the public knows is that he took an ImPACT test and passed, and this was precautionary.

I do know he practiced yesterday with the team, and during an interview at noon, he was commenting on being excited to go to Philly to see how the fans would greet him. He said he didn't think he'd get cheers like Lemieux did when he returned from his long absence, but he wasn't sure how much booing he would get at the beginning of the game either. He suggested that as the game went on, he would probably hear Philly fans reacting to him just like they used to. Something happened between then and 4:00 when the team went to board the plane to Philadelphia because he wasn't on it.

And here I was excited to see him get ruffed up by the Flyers, I guess I have to wait until they meet again I suppose. :sadvaultboy:

So with a 4 point game last night Giroux took the lead in total points in the NHL. :foodndrink:

:) It'll happen. Better losing to the irrelevant Thrashers Jets than losing to a real team. :P They lost because they were out-goaltended straight up, and because they sat Seguin which made the offense lack pop.

I wonder what the NHLPA is going to say about the realignment. I've read that they're gonna be down with it, but I'm not so sure.

I didn't get a chance to see Ovechkin's goal from last night yet, but I heard it was spectacular. I heard his spear was killer, too.

Many things worked for the Jets that game. Bruins had playe the night before in Pittsburgh and had to travel overnight to play the next night. Rask was in net and let in two bad goals. Seguin wasn't playing. Refs called a few bad ones late in the game against Boston after missing a few earlier and fans here in Winnipeg are terrible... The whole goalie-name chanting thing is embarrassing. Stupid prairie hick town I live in :P

Thanks. I wasn't impressed by it. I thought Nick Foligno's goal was better.

The Jets are performing above expectations right now because they have a much more solid, committed management group that actually has some understanding of how to run a team, as well as pressure from an actual hockey market, to uphold certain standards. If the first thing that comes to your mind, on the other hand, is what about the Leafs.. well, that's just it, they're the Leafs.

Indeed. I still don't expect them to make the playoffs, but I do like what I see. The fans... energetic yes but quite arrogant unfortunately. Every call against us is a "bad call" and everyone always try's to chant the goalies name to throw him off. I've seen other NHL hockey before, and I can safely say I've never seen a stupider crowd before.
