Nightkins

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:27 am

Just a thought I had the other day, but haven't seen any discussion or confirmation about this on the various outlets.

Nightkins, the grey/black supermutants with the addiction to stealthboys... Will we be able to see them on the compass as a red hostile icon, even while they are using the stealth feature?
Any thoughts? Ideas how this could work if it weren't already in there (see: speculation)? Anybody already got confirmation of how this will work (I know some of you have been to PAX and other events where you've played the game)?
Let's...DISCUSS!

We shouldn't be able to.
That would defeat the purpose of them being invisible.
Maybe with a perk at mid-high level but only if there are more enemies that can sneak. (To make it worthwhile.)

well im guessing it would be like the dragoons from operation anchorage, in that DLC if you have played it (dragoons are chinese soldiers wearing sort of like an automatic stealthy suit) the way they work was that they were like not completely invisible but you can see the light reflecting off their bodies. so you can catch a glimpse of them but you couldn't use VATS while they were invisible, which was great because it made u super paranoid but it was kinda annoying how they would travel in packs of 3-5 other dragoons

any way im pretty sure that the dragoons don't appear on your compass while they are invisible :disguise:

I guess if your Perception is high enough, then you probably would naturally be able to.

I'd like something like this. I think it'd havta be on a Perception of 10, but nothing lower, just for balance sake, but I'd like a passive attribute bonus as opposed to taking a perk. Now if it were available as an non-selected perk (for example: taking the ant might/sight perk did not count against your perk choice at level-up) thenI could get in on that option.

If you check out the companion profiles, the Eyebot's special perk seems to shed light on this question.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/09/15/fallout-new-vegas-for-ps3-meet-the-companions/#more-35908
"Perk: Enhanced Sensors – while ED-E is a companion, the player can detect enemies at an increased range. Additionally, enemies will appear on the player’s compass and can be targeted in V.A.T.S. even when cloaked."

This suggests that without assistance, cloaked enemies not only are untargetable in VATS, but can't even be seen on your compass.

Correct. Unless you're paying very close attention, usually the first hint you have that a Nightkin is around is when it de-cloaks in front of you with a piece of rebar swinging toward your head.

By close attention, do you mean the stealth field is like Fallout 3s? (Where it's more chameleon than invisible)

I seriously hope that the only indication you have is their heavy breathing.

So the way I'd read Sawyers answer: We don`t see anything on compass until the Nightkin de-cloak.... Assuming the battle goes long enough that the Nightkin recloaks, will they disappear again from the compass?

While I am 100% certain I will be annoyed as hell the first time this kills one of my characters, it's good to see the opposition starting to use tactics in battle. This also means I will need to stay on my toes while clearing out a location, since there might well be a hidden Nightkin or three waiting to ambush me while I rummage through a file cabinet looking for spare ammo.

Hopefully this will be a risk, and the Nightkin WON'T just rush you as soon as they see you. It'd be beyond cool to have stealth enemies like this actually stalk the player until they were in a vulnerable position.

On oblivion invisiblity was like 90% chameleon because you still could see your character, while 100% chameloen was completely gone.

Maybe with a Perception of ten and if you had elephant ears, otherwise no. Unless it's an extremely clumsy new recruit. :o Maybe the higher your Perception the bigger your ears! ....no?. okay.

This would be awesome if the enemy could sneak on you. I'll finally have a reason to use land mines for protection, rather than setting ambushes. I would say that I hope they'll still show up on the compass with a 9 or 10 PE.

They appeared on you compass as friendlies and you could target them in VATS but couldn't shoot them. There was still a problem there because once you exited VATS, the dragoon was right in your crosshairs. Maybe they've fixed all this.
