Future DLC explanation maybe? Where we find that lab or some research notes.

What bugs me are the lovable huggable centaurs only have one head.

I was hoping for a lab, too.

On the other hand, I really liked the pre-release theory I read on the forums that suggested they could be actual Chupacabras that happened to thrive after the bombs fell. Something like that would've been pretty awesome.

They're not bad, you see them hunting in packs, since they're so weak alone, which shows that someone took the time to make a nice little AI for them, I've seen them use effective hunting tactics against a Giant Radscorpion, one attacked from the front, two more ran around behind it, the other two joined from the front and the two behind attacked it then, they all died, but it was nice seeing them using some method to taking down something larger than them, gives the game more of a realistic feel.

A backstory for them would have been nice, just some insight on how they were actually created.

And one slight correction for you, they're not FEV created, it's a Coyote with Rattlesnake genes spliced into it, FEV would make them sterile, and you find Young Nightstalkers, so they must be reproducing.

They make more sense than giant geckos. Fire breathing geckos, for that matter. Never liked them much in Fallout 2 and they're just goofy and silly looking as they gallop toward you, tongues wagging. Rattlesnake wolves, despite lack of back-story, are just cooler and scarier.

FEV was used to create many wasteland creatures that reproduce just fine.

Yeah, It was mostly just Super Mutants that were sterile.

Exactly, apparantly it's only some sort of human gene that prevents Super Mutants from breeding.

@Raven- I have no problem with them for who they are, its the fact that their backstory is virtually nonexistant. No indications whatsoever they were scientifically made.

The Master messed around with the vats combining animals to see what he could do at one point. Afterwards he started the Unity.

I'm disappointed in their low numbers and actual threat level.
But it would have been nice with some backstory to them, I guess it's for DLC material.

There's a lot of "classic" fallout monsters that were never well-explained though.

Deathclaws were only explained in non-cannon sources as far as I know, and they never explained Wanamingos at all.

I like a blend, myself. I'm a hgue lore wonk but then again, I hate it when everyone and their little sister seems to know hidden forbidden lore because it's plot-convenient in an RPG. gamesas and Obsidian are both very good at not doing that to us.

Deathclaws - FEV creations meant to be used as biological(?) warfare.
Wannamingos - FEV creations meant to be used as biological(?) warfare.

Deathclaws were an experiment to be used on enemy forces. (Chinese.)

Same for Wanamingos.

Where was that explained though?

I thought that the origin of deathclaws was only definitively stated in FO:BoS?

Fallout 2's Enclave told the origin of Deathclaws, And Fallout 2 (I forgot where) told the reason for Wanamingo's.

"The deathclaws were originally created before the Great War by the United States Military in order to replace humans during high-risk close-combat search-and-destroy missions[1]. They were Jackson's Chameleons[2] genetically modified with the DNA of various other species.

Deathclaws being genetically engineered before the War and later refined by the Master is mentioned only in the Fallout 2 Official Strategies & Secrets strategy guide, written by Fallout 2 lead designer"

Thanks, so that's the FIRST mention, it's not in canon FO2.

What about wanamingos? is that ever stated? It'd be easy to write them off as natural mutation if they didn't show up on the ship too...

Wanamingos were stated in game to be the product of FEV mutations on an animal. (Not specified which animal.)

Probably just the creation of some mad scientist. The load screen mentions the DNA splicing, so maybe there'll be a DLC about a scientist who's creating crazy animals, or maybe there's already something in a computer somewhere in the game that explains who made them. I'm sort of ok with not knowing/meeting the person who thought this would be a good idea, a half coyote, half rattlesnake that hunts in packs and as we find out in one quest, can become quite... stealthy :-)
