Non-Lethal Magic Build

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:23 pm

Could this be done? I had this idea a while ago but never got round to trying it out. The idea was to try and RP as a non-lethal mage, focusing on Illusion, Alteration and Restoration.

Skills: Illusion - Alteration - Restoration - Alchemy - Light Armour - One Handed.

I think it would be near impossible to just use those three schools of magic without the use of One Handed but maybe only use it for daggers.

Edit: Swap Light Armour for Enchanting.

I suggest you take a look at http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=felix+the+peaceful+monk&oq=felix+the+peacef&aq=0&aqi=g8g-m1&aql=&gs_sm=1&gs_upl=229l4587l0l5980l16l14l0l2l2l0l214l1330l4.6.1l11l0, it's a pretty neat way to play the game but I personally lack the patience.

I like to kill stuff. :/

I've seen some threads about non-lethal characters, but not mages. Might want to add sneak if that fits with your character idea. Illusion with calm & invisibility, Alteration with Paralyze, Restoration for turning undead, and sneak might work. And if you can get the throw voice shout it would be good to distract enemies so you can sneak thru doors etc....

That's a bit too extreme for me. Also I was thinking of changing One Handed to Destruction and only use Shock spells, as a RP idea the use of Shock is him harnessing the energy around him.

sneak might work.

Yeah maybe but if I use Sneak I'll only take maybe one or two perks.

If you're using illusion, you probably won't need many perks in sneak tree anyway. :P

You mentioned enchanting and that will help with either -cost reduction and/or resists (magic or fire/frost/shock).

For enemy mages, the Atronach stone for absorb magic as well as the Alteration perk for absorb magic might be a good idea. Or you could go the Alteration resist magic perk route too.

Not sure how your idea of shock destruction magic fits into a non-leathal mage build, but if it fits into your RP idea then that's fine. If we had spellmaking you could add an illusion calm or fear effect to the shock spell for a cool RP idea, but oh well.

I don't want to make a pure non-lethal character, I just like trying to play the game in different ways, running around hacking and slashing doesn't really do it for me. I like to find interesting ways to play. So the idea of a character that specialises in more non-lethal ways of killing kind of appeals to me. Also I'll will come up against enemies who will be immune to my non-aggressive attacks and I'm trying to figure out the best way of killing them. The use of daggers or the use of shock.

Ah, so kind of like Kwai Chang Caine (Grasshopper) from the Kung Fu tv series in the 70's. (Yes, I'm old, wanna fight about it!! ) He walks the earth, having little adventures, fights only when needed. And I said "kind of" as I'm not expecting you to actually play a shaolin monk.

I'm young and the only reference I got is the one from Family Guy

But yeah basically I wanna respect the land and my abilities and only use lethal when have no choice.

That's a really neat idea. My character is similar, but swap illusion for destruction =p More of a historian than a warrior, but I don't shy away when something must be done!

I think I would make mine a scholar, becoming a book collector is something that I've been wanting to do for sometime now. One small thing that has stopped me so far is I will need a lot of bookshelf space.

I don't own a home, it's feel very out of character for my character, so I only keep a few that I really, really enjoy. The rest I sell to Urag gro-Shub at the college, because Dromok knows they'll be in a good home. =)

I like the idea, but I find sneaking around dungeons without killing any of the enemies can still do what you need to do.
After all, you can just pickpocket keys.

Also running. There will be a lot of running.

My idea was to permanently stay at Inns, taking all the books with me and leaving them in the room. When I was done pack up and more to the next hold.

Very cool, does this character have an ultimate goal he's trying to achieve?

Not yet. When I get a backstory things will become more clear. I'm thinking an ageing Altmer, that's about all I got so far.

I always go with conjuration on my passive mages, why fight when someone else will do it for you.

and later, if the urge takes you to get involved, you can call upon the weapons in the school

My character kinda has an ongoing goal, but it's very minor and is often second fiddle to his research. I'm very interested to see how it turns out for you! =)

I'm thinking of doing something similar-a non lethal warrior character based on the brave Sir Robin from Monty Python's Holy Grail.
