Am I a noob for playing on Novice?

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:36 pm

I play on Novice difficulty on Skyrim ive tried higher ones and I can somewhat handle them but I don't find the challenge of enemy's fun but the adventure of doing it more fun so that is why I play on that difficulty setting, am I a noob for doing it or just a noob for asking if im a noob for doing it?

Games are played to have fun. Who cares?

I only care about someone's skill at playing a game in two instances: if they're on my team or if they're on the opposing team. Neither's relevant here.

There is no shame in lowering the difficulty if you find the game is not fun due to it being too hard, I've done it myself.

Precisely. The whole object in life is to have fun. Gaming especially!

If you like being the Super-Overpowered-úber God of Everything then go for it, no one else can say that's a bad way to play. ^.^

Why is that even something to be asked on a forum? You play how you want to play, period...

I play novice too because I prefer focusing on story and exploration than being challenged.

Noob.

Just kidding. TBH, you may find this detrimental, eventually. The game gets ridiculous with its leveling power. In one part, you can one-shot-kill. In others, you're scrambling for safety. The good thing is you can adjust these settings at any time.

Try adept, and if the battle gets harried, switch it down. Just don't want you end up bored because it's too easy for you.

Is the game more entertaining to you on Novice?

Do you find that difficulty to be just right in terms of Challenge vs. Frustration ratio?

Then "ur doin' it rite"! I see no noob, here.

Anyone that tells you anything along the lines of "Master or GTFO" has waaaaaay too much to prove to people they have never met, and likely never will. It's got to be unhealthy.

Nah, some people just like the game and don't really want a challenge. i for one only play Novice when I get far in a dungeon and die. I'd rather not struggle through the thing I just struggled through.

I hear a lot of "Y U NO PLAY ON MASTER???" but everyone has their preferences and there's not anything wrong with playing on an easier mode. Personally I hate getting one-shotted all the damn time. It's frustrating, and as I don't have the patience to grind armor skills my characters tend to be made of paper so I play on Adept.

It depends on what you're looking to get out of the game. If all you want to do is run around and pick up interesting stories that are in the world, and not have to worry about having enough potions etc. to get through the next fight, then Novice is perfect for you.

Heck, Skyrim is my first ever single-player non-puzzle game where I'm stacking on difficulty. Normally everyone else is like "I'm playing Halo on Legendary!" and I'm all "I... I had a really hard time on default..." I play Skyrim on Master, but I understand the "agh I cannot do the difficulty setting everyone else seems to be on" feeling.

I did my first two playthroughs on Novice. Granted I didn't know what the "difficulty" I was setting referred to, it was only later that I found out it was just controlling the damage given/taken ratio between me and my enemies. But I was new to TES and to RPGs in general, so my main goal was to have fun and explore a whole new world and figure out how everything in it worked. I moved up to Adept later but that's as high as I've gotten, maybe I'll bump it up if I stay with a character so long that I'm completely OPed and combat is never a challenge any more. But, I dunno.

As others have said, the whole point is to enjoy playing and if you can't get what you want out of the game with your current set-up, you change it until the game becomes fun again. There's no shame in wanting to get the most enjoyment you can out of something you bought expressly for that purpose.

I'll echo all the above, no reason not to play on novice if you want.

On a related note, are there *base* increases to XP gain on higher difficulties, or just the fact that it takes more spell casts/sword swings to kill things raise your XP faster?

Pretty sure it's the latter.

Just that it takes more hits to kill, and thus would give you more XP per fight. There's no increases to the calculations the system makes, as far as I know. Every hit still gets you the same amount.
