my google-fu is weak, so I'm having a hard time figuring out what exactly the 'unique' box in the actor window does. Does it make sure no random actor is generated with the same face? or does it have something to do with invulnerability?

It means that you cannot create more than one instance of that actor in the game world at once. You cannot have an army of, say, Ulfrics.
