[LOOKING FOR IDEAS] Nordic Necropoli: Massive Ruins

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 5:31 am

I've just been looking through Adam Adamowicz's concept art for Skyrim, and discovered http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7189/6877481575_156071b830_z.jpg gigantic cliffside nordic ruins appearing often, and in many different varieties.

As soon as I saw these I wanted to add them to Skyrim. They are epic, beautiful and giant, and would make for a fantastic mod. Im planning to take several different locations, and create massive necropoli/ fanes, each the size of a city in all, and possibly even bigger.

So, what I'm asking is:

Would you want to see a mod like this?

Where would any Necropoli/ Cliff cities pe placed? (thinking Sarthaal, Labyrinthian somewhere else in the reach, and on the coast near Solitude.)

This would be truly impressive. Adams designs are wonderful - I really hope you can pull this off. Even the name is awesome, "Nordic Necropoli: Massive Ruins" - it'd be quicker to ask who DOESN'T want to see them!

Funny, I just saw the concept art and thought "Why isn't something like this in the game?"

Go, do it!

And yes, I'd like to see the labyrinthian extended as well. It's quite annoying you can't get in there unless you join the mage guild.

Definitely, I don't think you'll find many who would be against this.

With ruins that big, I'd be looking for at least 2-3 hours worth of exploring and perhaps a quest that gives a back story as to what it actually is.

Actually, looks like the fifth one became Makarth. The city is surprisingly close to this original sketch.

I'd definitely like to see this. Maybe something in the style of Boecklin's http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0b/Arnold_Boecklin_-_Island_of_the_Dead,_Third_Version.JPG where the Nords would bring their dead by boat. In that way I wouldn't conflict with any quest or other mods.

Maybe make it one of those towns listed in book on Farangars table in dragons reach?

A lot of this stuff became Markarth, but the concept art sure looks like it could become an awesome ruin! Maybe another Dwarven city, like Markarth, that became abandoned?

I think sketch 4 is my favorite. Just the remnant of an ancient city clinging to a crumbling cliff side, overlooking the ocean. Treacherous ruined pathways and cascading waterfalls. Who knows what lurks if you make the ascent and venture into those deep corridors? ; )

I might also suggest that you focus on the structural modding, and see if you can get some talented modders excited to populate it with quests and possibilities. It'd be a monster job to do it all yourself.

Yeah, I thought so. Which is wierd, considering that it is very definitely nordic architecture.

These look wonderful, but I'm afraid Skyrim is just too small to fit all these massive ruins, like these: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7040/6877521361_74d2375eb2_z.jpg

This is one of the reasons why I complained so much over Skyrim being the same size as Oblivion when it was first known. Because I knew then that we would never see such epic ruins, epic valleys, epic mountains, etc...

There is some ingame novel about a deserted island up on the northern coast that was erased from all maps back in the 2nd era and now hosts nothing else than graves, ruins and a guild of necromancers. I forgot its name.

Yeah, that Skyrim would've been a lot bigger. But I still think a largish coastal ruin is a good idea.
It should be on the coast, ideally. I haven't had a look recently, but could it fit under solitude? or somewhere else pretty sheer, cliff-wise.
A story would be nice, perhaps told through diaries like the ruins under Markarth. However, I also think there should be a tribute to the man somewhere. Perhaps a reference in a book, or a unique item? (Gifted Quill, which gives a bonus when carried, like the scales of justice in oblivion?)

Finally come back to this (I know, its been a while) and started working on it. The focus of the mod has changed somewhat, instead of making a new dungeon the goal is to enhance and extend Labyrinthian, turning it into a massive, ruined capital instead of a (while quite long) normal dungeon. The focus is on exploration, not combat, although there will be monsters around and inside the ruins.

This is the Necropolis, the gigantic barrow that houses all of the Nordic dead within the city. It is somewhat inspired by http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7187/6877504777_21b4d8be2c_z.jpg
http://tnypic.net/b977a.jpg

Its far from finished, of course. I am also in the process of extending and overhauling the exterior. The outskirts will flow outwards from the southern wall, while the areas within the wall wil house the high fanes, palace and dragon court chambers.

You should definitely do this. I myself have been dabbling with the creation kit (Dungeons in particular) and I really enjoy making them. They do, however, take a lot of time to do the misc clutter and lighting as it is all handplaced. Good luck to you.

Plural of necropolis would be necropoleis (Greek) or necropoles (Latin), not necropoli.

i think alot of new architecture would need to be created, stuff that matches skyrim, but has a more distinct feel. just to somewhat remove the copy paste feel i get whenever i see the nord ruins as they are now.
and as hlvr said, skyrim was not large enough. and thats a damn shame.

A mod that adds unique new places and additional content? Why would I want that!? /sarcasm

YES! I would love to see this.

Though just as a note, those are his concepts for Markarth. :P
