Nostalgia and your past

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 7:51 pm

So I was remembering old times, well not that old, just maybe 8 years past when I had a best friend. I introduced the Fallout series to him, Fallout 1&2 to be exact. I was 12-13 years old then and I was in middle school.

We would skip school just to stay at my house and play video games, I had a PS2 and a PC. We would take turns between the two. I remember the early morning hours after dawn when it was around 7pm and my mother would be at work, so we had my house to ourselves. They were the best times of my life, at the moment.

I also had another friend who was the opposite of my best friend, we would drink and smoke. But I showed him Fallout as well, and he was hooked. He passed away 3 years ago.

We eventually faded away from each other and moved on, I moved and moved again.

So, what are some good times you remember that make you very nostalgic?

There's nothing in my life that I really feel nostalgic about.

My mum and dad's farm in Kenya. I loved that place, and I miss it dearly, especially my 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

My photobucket account is pretty old. I've had it since I was 14 or 15. Every year i'll log on to it and reminisce about all jokes I had with friends and all the bridges I burned.

The most amazing part is my complete disconnection with who I used to be. Its almost like I was born 5 years ago. I can't remember acting the way I did when i was in highschool.

I guess its called..growing up? I don't know.

Two things make me really nostalgic. Visiting a school I went to earlier in my life, and video games. When I visited my elementary school at 12 at night with my friends, it was the weirdest feeling I've ever had. And when I played the first Halo again with my cousin, or play the original Pokemon games, it always makes me smile remembering the good times.

I led as boring a life back when I was younger as I do now, so there's not much to be nostalgic about. I have some nice memories of video games, played with friends or alone. There are a few standout moments I fondly recall that revolve around the end of high school, like the failure that was senior prom, the class trip to a nearby water park, my valedictorian speech, and the few afterparties. That's about it.

I didn't have a good childhood, but I frequently find myself reminescing about my first relationship. I'd never been that close to someone, and it was nice being able to cuddle all the time.

King of the hill in a quarry.
Block long water gun fights.
Ramping my bike in the barranca.

These are the fond memories.

Not much really causes the nostalgia feeling, but there's one song that does it every time. I was around 12-13 when it came out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGytDsqkQY8

Mainly because I used to play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q26rqNGFA-E(Later renamed to Active Worlds) around then and made a few good friends on it. The world we frequented had an object programmed to play a midi version of that song. So this song always makes me recall those times. Oh and the Braveheart theme makes me think of it too because an awesome server called "Mutation" had it playing too.

I get lots of nostalgia when I reminisce about skipping school back when I was 12-13 to play Diablo 2 with my best friend. I'm probably going to shed tears when I first play Diablo 3, because it just won't be the same.

Life is so weird sometimes. Like what is the future? The future is now. Now it's the past. But your reading this in the present, which is now past. Aghhhhhh.

Yes, that would be called the passage of time. :P

I get massive nostalgia listening to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1Dl9rUa6-0. I spent about half a year sailing in the Caribbean with my family when I was 12, and we listened to a CD we'd bought in Puerto Rico almost the whole time (in addition to Bob Marley, of course! :P). Definitely the best time of my life.

The most nostalgic thing I know of is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235138/, my favorite childhood cartoon. Even imported the soundtrack from Japan a while ago and it's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIjcKFNp4sQ

And then various C64/Amiga games

Oh, and of course the place I grew up, still think about it now and then. Lived next to the forest and had a marvelous time there. Unfortunately, my parents sold the place back in 2003 :(

So, what are some good times you remember that make you very nostalgic?
--1st backpacking trip in the Sierras, age 12
--A couple of camping vacations hubs and I took at a lake (before we were actually married) in our early 20's during a drought (lake was very low, it was hot, we were practically alone). Drove past the official campsites and camped right on the drought-level edge of the water. Fishing. Swimming. Goofing off. Perfect.
--Camping overnight at the beaches with various friends/couples, complete with driftwood fires.
--Being in a state of not-sober and playing RISK with buddies all night long, on many occasions.
--many other such scenarios.

I had a really great childhood, so the whole of the 90s + early 00s is just one big nostalgic memory for me.

90s music in particular makes me very nostalgic, and I often associate certain songs with a certain time or event in my childhood. I also get very nostalgic about some of the video games I played as a child, and also some of the old websites I used to spend a lot of time on (like Neopets and GaiaOnline).

I actually feel really bad for the people who say they can't / don't experience nostalgia. For me, it's one of the best feelings in life.

I vividly remember the seven years of my childhood from 7 to 14. We had an awesome house in a great town. Lots of family get-togethers, lots of friends in the neighborhood and life was pretty carefree even for the advlts (dad always had a good job, mom was able to stay home). My older siblings feel the same way about that house - it was a home base for the entire family that will never be duplicated. Even other families on the street - I occasionally hear from childhood friends and they all have the same feeling about growing up there. It was safe, fun, relaxed and there was a strong sense of community (something that's hard to find in most California towns and cities in 2012). I still have dreams about that place years later (such as finding it for sale and buying it).

I had a very similar story though it did not involve Fallout and the second friend turned to drug abuse and started hanging around neo-Nazi skinheads. Haven't heard of him for years.

Other than that no personal experience makes me feel nostalgic but some media pieces do, like the children's show http://yle.fi/vintti/yle.fi/lastenohjelmienhistoria/kuvat/rolli.jpg who was a troll-like creature who spent his days in a forest wondering the actions of "human-creatures" and trying to scare them, though he always felt bad about it afterwards. The show was quite popular and spawned a truckload of spin-offs, and had a strong environmentalist message.

Walking into the squadbay with a copy of Shadowrun first edition and a bag of dice..

[back then, as probably now there were strict anti-gambling laws enforced under the UCMJ on Pendelton] :whisper:

"What the [censored] is that, corporal?" Asked our A-gunner, a Louisiana boy who bore a striking resemblance to Grog, from the comic BC..

"It's a book, Grog.. but don't worry, it has pictures." -with rank, comes the privilege of put downs..

"Gather round devil-dawgs, cuz this is the only way any of you are *ever* going to roll dice and plays craps legally on this base."

Fun times

Very nostalgic about my childhood. Life with my parents wasn't good, but there was a strong community and loads of kids the same age. Wonderful place to grow up, the design of the area meant there were no busy through roads, there were lots of open spaces, a large meadow and modern schools within easy walking distance. The '70s were actually a pretty good time to be a kid, I think: in spite of the industrial strife (which was over my head anyway) it was a time of great optimism before the money-obsessed cynicism of the '80s and people weren't afraid to talk to each other. The summers were also incredibly hot and sunny, and I was too young to really worry too much about the TV news programmes showing reservoirs dried out and cracking up. I remember visiting the kids next door often who were my best friends and was told off by their parents for knocking on the door: I should just wander straight in. Oh, and of course the newsagents always maintained a pair of the latest arcade machines!

We moved to another part of the country and I found it really tough, I wanted nothing more than to move back there. After about 20 years I did visit properly and realised that you can't go back to a place, because it was another time. Everyone had moved on and it now looked a bit small and scruffy; part of the secondary school had been pulled down, the meadow had been built on and the remainder grassed over, the shops now had graffiti-laden metal shutters over their windows. Sad, but I guess I should remember to grow up when I did: it was a pretty idyllic childhood in many respects.

When I get up in the morning and realise I have work, it makes me think of how good secondary school was, then that makes me think of how awesome primary school must have been. I want a time machine damnit, work svcks compared to school :ahhh:

I get enjoyment from games, just by remembering certain times when I've played those games. Such as a few years back when I was playing DDO a month or so after I first discovered it, I was having a lot of fun...enough that it was one of the most fun (I have a lot of these) moments in my life. I think it was because I was on a pill that was supposed to make you focus at the time, but hey I remember it being really fun.

Morrowind has many of those events, and really that's the only way I can enjoy the game anymore..remembering that stuff. Most of the time it's from when I was first exploring it. Oblivion does too, but it's not as strong as Morrowind.

Pretty much every game I've deeply enjoyed to some extent. I can remember certain parts about them, and really it's those thoughts that excite me from time to time..and then I want to play those games..but once I do the nostalgia dissipates and I get bored pretty fast. It's like the excitement just comes from the thoughts of those certain moments when I was playing the game.

I used lived in a small town with almost no traffic and allot of playing fields, these where the first 10 years of my life and the things i am most nostalgic about is all the stupid [censored] me and my friends did. but i moved away and they all grew apart because they went to different schools. About a year ago i started hanging around again with a friend from that time but we kinda stopt doing that because we have just become so different. However this weekend my old class has a reunion so i guess i am gonna get a major nostalgia trip there.

It's not old enough to be nostalgic, but 2009 was a very good year for me and I often think back on it.

There are older, nice memories, but nothing I'd consider myself nostalgic for or nearly as fond as 2009.
