not enough snow

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 2:52 pm

does anyone else find it a bit strange that some parts of skyrim have no snow(such as riften) yet when you were at the top of the map and looking into skyrim in oblivion the entire area was covered in snow.

skyrim's weather does not seem as harsh as its described in my opinion

only snow would be boring

in fact, i pretty much hate the snowy areas and if skyrim would be full of it, i would have quitted playing a long time ago.

Because if everything was covered in snow it would be a bland game. I remember them saying pre-release something along the lines of not wanting all snow, but making Skyrim more diverse with forests and valleys.

It would've been nice, if the foot tracks were left on the snow. Snow just doesn't have enough depth in Skyrim. Although it does looks nice in the air.

I really don't get this one. There is a lot of snow covered areas in the game, so much so that I'm glad for the areas that are more varied.

bear in mind that the place in oblivion in which you could look into Skyrim was at the top of a mountain range where it's colder where as Riften is located in a low valley where it's warmer

I'm glad that the middle of the map has no snow, I like the autumny feel of Riften and the tundra of Whiterun. Verity is the spice of life.

Let's remember that just because there isn't snow on the ground that it doesn't mean it isn't cold. We just can't feel it.

Personally I think the best way that the Devs could have avoided this was have the Seasonal changes, such as displayed in the Gamejam video.

That way it could fit more easily with previous descriptions, and would allow the game some variety.

Alas, this isn't the case and I'm glad that it's the way it is. I'd rather it re-wrote the lore a little bit, than was bland.

It would be monotonous in the extreme if all of Skyrim was snowbound. Scandinavia has summer, spring and fall, too.

Sorry for the double post, but that's a good point. In some cases it can be warmer when it does snow.

It actually wasn't all snow you saw, when you peaked beyond the border in the northern parts of the Jerall Mountains, if I remember correctly. What you saw, if I am correct geography-wise, should be the area south of Rifton?

Personally, I am happy that Skyrim isn't all snow, though I have a very hard time spotting wolves in the woods, especially when I make a move at night.

I am already bored of the snow, i much prefer the lush green lands in Cyrodiil. So i am personally very glad that all of Skyrim is not covered in snow.

Don't fast travel, and see how many times you can go from the College of Winterhold to the house in Solitude before you stop saying not-enough-snow.

The weird thing for me is how fast the transition from snow to almost summer weather is. It`s very, very quick, too quick for natural weather systems and I don`t FT. But I suppose it`s a limitation of the game engine and distance. the game world is simply too small to reflect realistic weather changes.

However, get really high up and the snows, blizzard and wind is quite impressive. It actually looks cold. there should be some kind of ingame cold hit to your health for it.

I love the eclectic environments in Skyrim. I think the surroundings are one of the best things in the game! Every place is so beautiful and different than the others. Snow, or the lack thereof, is an important creator of variety.

Come to think of it... There is the feauture in the game of ice magic slowing people down. This could've been a good add in some places where there would have been very much snow. You couldn't move as fast as normally because the half a meter snow drift is slowing you down! (That could've been a pain in the butt, though. Lack of dynamicy in a video game? One cannot possibly live with it!

...
