Now I am getting really angry: Creation Kit completely [cens

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:48 am

I am a mod author and I have worked a lot in the past with the Creation Kit.

As a tool, it had some limits and some weird behaviours (such as [censored] up textures which are set on vanilla meshes and worked till 10 sec before!), but it worked.

Now, about 10 minutes ago, the following happened:

I have tried to make an archive of my updated mod data and I've overwrote the BSA data of my mod into the Skyrim data.

That was the request to the STUPID toolset...

...and it showed some kind of activity...

...then you check into the folder and what??

You find a BSA into the Skyrim data folder and ANOTHER into the main Skyrim directory.

The problem is that the second seems to be more updated than the former (which you told it to overwrite, which it didn't!)...

...and I never told that STUPID tool to save there!!

...so I've tried a check and moved the BSA of my mod from its location outside the Steam folder, to check if was that or the other the data of my mod...

...and what?? The CK crashed!!!

...retried...crashed again!!

...and then? Data folder disappeared!!

Now, I want a blasted answer:

What your idiotic Creation Kit did to my Data folder????!

To say that I am angry is an absolute misstatement...

...I am going [censored] berserk on this!!

How is it possible that the toolset saves in a location which isn't intended to???

If I say it to save inside the Data folder HOW could it IGNORE a direct and clear order??!

And, finally, how is it possible that it could [censored] up my Data folder???

I have made a more accurate check.

Only God knows how, but the Data directory, which I never moved, seems to have somehow moved to my Games directory, when I copied the "weird BSA" created by the CK into that directory. So, at least, I've not lost everything...

However, thinking about it with cooler mind, the following crazy issues arise:
1) I have packed archive into the Data folder, telling the CK to pack with the name of the original BSA, which in 99.999999999999% of applications means "overwrite"...and it didn't do it!
2) While this could have something to do with the fact that I have, for certainty, make an incomplete upload to Steam to be sure that the archive was created (since in the past it was the way
to have a proper archive), that doesn't explain why no update was done to the file into the Data directory.
3) Moving the BSA in the Skyrim archive somehow seems to have moved the whole Data package with it, which is a complete insanity!

Point 1:

Please don't make up statistics like that, almost all of my programs are set to rename the duplicates with either - or () where n is the index and doesn't append it at all at index 0.

Point 2:

I'm having a really hard time figuring out what you mean there.

Point 3:

Uh, I think you mean directory.

In all honesty, I think you accidentally did something on your end. However, it's extremely hard to tell as your posts are not very clear and mainly just raging.

Clear, concise, and level headed is the best way to get help as it makes figuring things out so much simpler.

Now I have checked:

Moved both files to another directory and tried to repack the archive.

Create Archive obviously has some real issue with overwriting and may be...it's possible that the Steam Workshop upload saves into the Skyrim directory?

Now I have still two archives. I'd guess that the one in Data is from Create Archive, but why it doesn't overwrite/update the archive????

No. Confirmed:

The IDIOT keep saving into the Skyrim directory even if I keep telling it to save into the Data directory!

Now I'd like to understand how your Creation Kit could be so STUPID???

Dude you cant save directly into the Data folder because STEAM is installed in the Program Files folders (most of the time), your best bet is to create a project folder in your documents and save your work there.

Also you'll wanna tone down the attitude, Almighty http://www.gamesas.com/user/76969-rohugh/ is watching :)

Yeah. While it's weird, it could be...I was absolutely berserking when it kept saving into a different directory.

However, it's extremely hard to tell as your posts are not very clear and mainly just raging.

Ok, after a few checks, the clear, concise and level headed version is this:

The Creation Kit doesn't take in account my indications when I tell it to save into the Data folder with a certain name for the BSA.

The file is name with that name (yes), but on the main Skyrim folder, which is one level up.

I really don't understand how it could do such a nonsensical thing, because obviously Data folder is the place where all BSA should stay!

You mean it does that on purpose?

I am saving inside the Steam directory, which isn't into the Program Files folder (which could be restricted), but the problem is that it doesn't allow me to save into the Data folder even if it's under Steam...

The whole Program files folder is restriced I think, if you really wanna save in the Skyrim folder try this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

EDIT: And then take ownership of the whole Skyrim folder lol

Only on the C drive. The best solution is this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129

Emmmh...sorry, guys...that doesn't explain this:

I am saving on a drive E: because C: is left for the operating system.

Steam is saved into a Games directory of E: and Skyrim is inside SteamApp directory...so, in theory, there is no reason for that directory to be restricted.

Ok, you weren't really clear up there.

Do you mind taking some time to clean things up some to make things easier to follow and post it in one post?

Just a thought. :)

Taking ownership doesn't help.

However, now I have found this:

Create Package saves inside the main Skyrim directory.

Upload Plugin and Archive in Steam saves inside the Data directory.

...is this normal?
