Oblivion Archery

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:14 am

Yes yes I know this has been mentioned before but:

So I changed the archery settings in the ini file so that firing a bow is more like what it is in Oblivion and less like firing a gun.

I would now to take this opportunity to advise everyone - that means you, and you, and even you at the back there with the funky avatar - to change the ini settings.

It is truly awesome because the whole arrow thing is a lot more IRL and I can't believe the number of arrows I have now lost since making the change. :D

So yeah, change it - it's 1337.

Am I the only one who doesn't notice a difference between Oblivion's Archery and Skyrim's? Care to elaborate on the "before and after"?

That's the spirit!

You can change a lot of things in the settings, decide not to use or do things.
It's better than whining about how much better Oblivion was all the time. People like that should just play Oblivion again... But I notice many of the whiners are addicted to Skyrim after all. Complaining is so easy, giving tips like this is much better and useful. You cannot possibly please all (potential) players.

So... thanks for sharing.

Well, there's a thread about it somewhere - I forget quite where now - but basically in vanilla Skyrim the arrow fires above the crosshair and doesn't "dip" as naturally as perhaps it should - so A: you don't necessarily hit what you are aiming at and B: the trajectory is more "bullet-like" if you see what I mean.
Anyway - when you change the ini it makes the arrows go through the crosshair but also have more of a natural arc, like a real arrow - (at least I think so).

Thing is after playing Skyrim for X time with the setting one way, it takes a while to get used to it with the otheer setting!

I should point out at this point that I actually thoroughly enjoyed using the vanilla setting but I actually do prefer the "Oblivion" way.

Ah I see what you mean now. Well I'm a console player for now, so I guess I'm stuck with having to sit on a ledge and study a target and wait for the perfect opportunity to fire. I'd like the Oblivion settings better, but oh well.

I've put in probably 800 hours as a Skyrim archer, I think it is fine as it is. I have no trouble hitting my mark, if I were to fiddle with the settings it'd likely annoy me even if it is more realistic.

I know - but the learning curve - (literally) - is great.
And that's the thing I had no trouble hitting my mark previously but now I have to concentrate that little bit more.
Well I like - I'm just saying, that's all. :D

Niamh is a Bosmer as well, and is very proficient with one. In her world however the lore does not preclude her imperfection.

Oh believe me I'm not saying it's wrong - I'm just saying this gives it, for me, extra depth.

Well, the current settings don't do that either since the only thing this ini setting changes is the distance, in which the crosshair actually is spot on. So you only need to aim a bit higher at long distances and a bit lower up close. I don't really see any need for this setting, since it basically doesn't change anything about the way Archery feels imo.

then don't use it.

(Actually only the navmesh setting changes the distance, the two things are not connected).

I didn't say the distance arrows fly, I said the distance in which the crosshair is spot on.

And I think of something different, when you say "that firing a bow is less like firing a gun".

//edit

I only see merit in this change, if you hide your crosshait at all times and fire by the tip of your arrow. Which would be the most realistic way. ^^

Hm, I might try that one, so I need to thank you after all, for bringing this tweak to my attention.

That might have been what you meant but it's not what you said.
Anyway - life is too short for this.

If you change the setting, rather than aiming above the crosshair, you aim at the crosshair. Over a longer distance you have to aim the crosshair above where you want the arrow to be, because of gravity.
I'm not gonna argue about it with you, for me, although I liked the vanilla method - I prefer this and it has made a difference. Give it a go, and see. You've got nothing to lose.

Dude, you are just rephrasing what I said...

Also your opening post makes it sound like the uberchange to Archery and to me it is a trivial one, which isn't really needed, since the only thing changing is like you said, the position of your aim on the y-axis for different distances.

Seriously, give it a rest.
Unfortunately forum threads often lose the nuances of language, my opening post was deliberately over the top, yes. But that said it has made a difference to the way I play, so it's cool.

I just get into the bad habit of explaining myself and getting a bit annoyed, when people don't get what I mean.

Cookie as a peace offering? ^^ :cookie:

I might try the settings without a crosshair, once I get used to Wars in Skyrim. ;)
