An Observation on Highly Specific Weapon Enchantments

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:56 am

Whilst travelling across Skyrim, I've found a few weapons with very specific enchantments that provoked thought.
What I mean by "specific" weapon enchantments is that they are highly selective, and they only offer a buff of any kind against a particular type of enemy - such weapons include Trollsbane (with an enchantment of +15 burning damage to trolls ONLY), the Bow of the Hunt (+20 damage to animals), and the Poacher's Axe (+5? damage to animals)

Allow me to start by saying that I really like the idea of these enchantments - weapons designed to do a specifc job, and to do it well. The issue I have with them is that I think should really feel as though carrying, say for instance, Trollsbane around as a secondary weapom can be justified in case I should run into any trolls.

The thing is though, I don't, because weapons with a +15 fire damage boost (or higher) to EVERYTHING are much easier to come by in random loot, rendering things like Trollsbane useless. Why carry round something that does 15 points extra damage to trolls only, when I can just have 15 points extra damage to everything instead?

I simply suggest that there should be a few more of these "selective" enchantments, and they should also be much more powerful (at least a buff of 30 damage, or whatever the highest random loot elemental buff is), because as it stands at the moment, I can't feel justified carrying one of these around for what-if situations.

There is one notable exception to this rule, which is Dragonbane, which at level 46 does a tidy +40 points of damage to dragons.

Just my two pence.

Am I the only one that remembers Briarheart Geis??? My first play through(before the first patch) I remember finding this enchant and putting it on a bow and my sword with the poacher's enchant. But since the patching started I've yet to re-find this enchantment, are they able to block access to certain stuff via code within the patch?

I heard about it, but apparantly it's not actually in the game, you're not crazy. Again, it's a nice idea for an enchantment but it's just not a large enough buff to be considered at all useful when it's so selective.

But you were able to disenchant it and then the damage would scale to your skill level, it starts a 5 but if memory serves me right I had it up to 20-30. The poacher's enchant is the same way I do believe.

Oh right, that's cool. Still, for non-enchanters, there should always be an option. And some of the more powerful ones shouldn't be disenchantable. to make it justifiable to carry them around as contingency weapons.

Agreed, what I end up doing with em is decorating my house. Once you reach higher levels you are able to craft stuff that's superior so they become decorations/trophies.
