How do I obtain this weapon? I've tried pickpocketing with and without a stealth boy. He always detects me I've even tried when he is asleep. Please can somebody tell me why this isn't working?

I'm sure people have said you can only get it by killing him. Whats your sneak?

Pickpocketing? While he has it equipped, its not in his inventory.
You have to reverse pickpocket him with a better weapon. Then take his weapon. When its in his inventory.
If you have already done that, and you see the weapon in his inventory, and you try to take it but fail, well its because of your Sneak skill. Is it high enough?
There are 2 ways to get the weapon.
1. Reverse Pickpocket and take.
2. Kill him and take.

Edit: I'm not sure you can get it by Reverse Pickpocketing.

My sneak is 18 but shouldn't a SB boost it to 100?

When you have the SB on, is your Sneak skill: 100(+)?

Yeah its 100+. Alright the rifle is in his inventory when I go to pickpocket. While I'm pickpocketing do I need to put a better weapon to replace before taking it so he won't notice me pickpocketing?

But I'm not sure you can get it by Reverse Pickpocketing.
I think killing will be filling the spot of Pickpocketing. You'll be picking it up. From the body you struck. With a bullet. Don't be pulling it.

I'd rather not kill him considering the quest involving him and also a [censored] load of NCR soldiers to deal with. The wiki says you can pickpocket it but I would like confirmation from some who has done it

I got it! I shot the gun out of his hand, picked it up, and then holstered my gun!

I have tried it. But I've failed about 25 times.
So I followed him for a walk. He goes all the way to near Black Mountain.
While he was on his walk, he got killed by Cazadores. I took his rifle from his dead body.

Shoot it out of his hand. Don't need high sneak, just shoot him with a weak gun, then when he pulls his weapon on you, shoot it in VATS with a high powered gun, then put away your weapon immediately. Pick up La Longue Carabine. You should do this without followers though, since they mess things up.

Wouldn't shooting him turn every soldier hostile? Do they all cool down when you put your weapon away?

Solve this problem by shooting him on the "walk" I mentioned my last post. I've never tried doing this, but I think it might work.

The carbine will appear in Sterling's inventory only after you got his ammo supply.
It took me forever to play that trick with Chief Hanlon to get ahold of his Ranger Sequoia...



Being unencumbered, light or no armor at all, Sneak skill in the 35-50 range helps alot when pickpocketing. Also, try to stand in the darkest corner possible,
and please... Turn off that Pip-Boy light.

I have the feeling that a Stealth boy goes 'on top' of your natural sneakyness,
since back at the time my Sneak skill wasn't that high, I was getting caught alot even when I would activate one.

Sneak, remove his ammo. Go in to McCarran airport then come out. His rifle will no be in his inventory. Sneak, steal, then blow his frigg'n head off.

You can pickpocket it from him, I've done it with about a 25 sneak skill before, it just takes awhile to do.

Oh, just shoot the guy in the face and take his stuff. If the rest of camp McCarran, or Camp Forlorn Hope, has a problem with that shoot them in the face as well. It's not like they'll be able to stop the Courier or anything think remotely like it.
