Off-skills for a ranger?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:43 pm

I′ve been away from Skyrim for a while and want to reroll. I want to play a character using light armor, 2h and bow and arrow. I have problem choosing offskills however as none seems to appeal to me.
Stealth: Too overpowered.
Smithing: Too overpowered, unless you really limit leveling it anyway.
Enchanting: Too overpowered, unless you really limit leveling it anyway.
Conjuration: Too overpowered, unless you use frost atronach which just blocks your path and cant walk through doors.
Illussion: Never really used this but it seems overpowered with the crowd control possibilities.
Destruction: Bland, also no point in using it with bow and 2h.
Alchemy: Fill ? your weight with ingredients? No thanks. Also overpowered if leveled too high.
Lockpicking: Well I'll use this but putting perks into it is just pointless.
Pickpocket: Why?

This leaves me with little skills to choose from. I guess I'll just have to play a very basic ranger.

Are you going for a LoTR-type of Ranger (aka: Aragorn)?

If so, Alchemy is a must... as long as you restrict it to healing and/or stamina potions. Personally, I'd have this setup:

1. Light Armor
2. Two-Handed
3. Archery
4. Alchemy (sticking to beneficial potions only)
5. Sneak (in little moderation)

But it's all up to you and what you envision what a Ranger should be like.

Yeah well I tried something similar before and I just think sneak with archery gets ridiculous after a while (such as shooting someone from sneak and they don't even detect you after the arrow hits). I guess I could limit how I use it more though. Otherwise the list sounds fine, I like the idea of skinning and leatherworking aswell but it doesn't take long before skins are replaced by ore so I guess that's out. I'd like to use one magic school atleast but none really appeals to me.

Well it kind of makes sense that an NPC doesn't detect you after you've shot them with an arrow while sneaking. Unless your character is shouting "BANG!" everytime they let one loose.

I'd 2nd the Marksman, 2H, Alchemy, Light Armor, and Sneak. Aragorn even chides Frodo about his ability to remain hidden at the Prancing Pony. Since you won't be using daggers you won't get a major boon of sneak which is 15x dagger damage.

Perhaps down the light armor path won't be quite so overpowered...

Do you own a home or have a room at the college?I leave all my ingredients at home and make my potions to take with me.It's amazing how much they weigh.

I'm going to make a Drizzt style Ranger but remove the Archery ability.

One-Hand Dual Wielding Swords (Scimitars specifically)
Stealth
Light Armor
Illusion (for taming/calming/etc)
Conjuration (just for Familiar)

I may do some in other places but not much.

Might as well do sneak, because you have to join the Thieves to get the most ranger like armor.

I'm doing an archer (roleplayed as beastmaster), who only has archery and alchemy as primary skills. I will depend on light armor, lockpicking and speech to level up to 50 (hopefully), which will be slooow (which is good). No melee (as then I would just become a normal warrior that uses his bow as a mere opener), and no magic. Alchemy is great with archery as it makes your character more interactive, like magic does. You can slow or paralyze fast opponents that you can't kite, hurt mages mana pool and regeneration, boost your bow damage, protect yourself from the elements, etc. etc..

I'm not a troll, I sincerely think that you have to watch out for using certain skills (or atleast combinations thereof) to avoid braking the game. I want a enjoyable and atleast moderately challenging experiance that doesn't rely on simply doubling enemies health and damage output.
I had completely forgot about speech, thats a skill tree I like. I prefer to play without loading over mistakes so the ability to bribe guards is neat.
I haven't tried using poisons, that's something I could look into.
I like the idea of conjuration but I find the AI of summons and followers to be so crude that it just annoys the living hell out of me. I keep blocking myself with them or running into them or they keep me in combat. I supose illusion would be a better off-skill for me.

In that case I got:
- Archery
- 2-Handed
- Light Armor
- Illusion
- Sneak
- Speech
- Lockpicking

I think that's something I could be satisfied with. Thanks for the advice!
