Official obsessive compulsive skillpoint thread

i have a problem. no matter how hard i try i CANNOT stand weird skill numbers. if i see something at level 23 i cant help but dump a couple of points into it to make it 25. all my numbers have to be multiples of 5 no matter what, even if its a skill that i never use such as hand to hand.

the problem gets even bigger if i raise an attribute that effects the skill. now i have to dump some more skill points into it on top of the few that i had initially put in. i figure that i lose around 20 to 30 skillpoints by the time i get to the end. my current character hasnt done it yet because im trying to convince myself to wait till i have all my attributes set and the implants bought. its really hard though. :sadvaultboy:

That is not a bad compulsion... you are most likely giving your characters more options and not pigeon-holing yourself by doing so.

I can see the aesthetic appeal of that, and do try to get my skillpoints ending up in 0 or 5 too, but it doesn't get to the "obsessive" level, thankfully :)

I do this myself, early on I get all skill into multiples of 5 then go from there. I like things neat...

All checks are at 5 point intervals, so it's not a bad thing to do.

guilty as charged. as a person i'm rather messy and slobbish (confirmed bachelor :P) so i definately wouldn't say i was an obsessive compulsive type (even though i have a routine for the perfect cup of tea) but yeah i like my stats to be rounded

I do the same thing. I'm only able to resist about 1/2 the time but the uneven numbers still tick me off lol.

Always got to be a multiple of 5. Always. Drives me nuts if I see a skill - even Energy Weapons (which I hate) - that is not a multiple of 5 and I have to fix it as soon as I am able.

I do all kinds of ridiculous crap to make this happen.

It's human nature for the most part I think.

I simply can't resist buying ammo or 'just one extra gun', even though I don't need it, probably won't use it, and really probably can't afford it.

It's the same as some people collecting certain stuff. I'm not as bad in FNV as I was in F3, but I still tend to do it.

As far as skill points go though, I am topping up skills that I really don't need to....don't know why, I know that I'm never going to make molerat fricassee with deathclaw sauce and baked mojave agave dumplings served with a radscorpion cocktail...or make a nuclear device out of a packet of detergent, an empty tin and three medical braces....

I did it for the longest time but it always ended up with me finding a skill book and upsetting the balance...

This time around I'm gonna wait until I'm level 29 to fix everything up...

I usually do this for the skills I care about, but the others I ignore because I don't want to "waste" the points.

same here, and fortunately there's a practical benefit for used skills, because most bonuses kick in at round numbers. 25/50/75/100 for locks and terminals, perks that require 70 or 40 or whatever in a skill, and so on. I'd miss out on a lot of those if I waited another level to go to a round number.

I switch back and forth. I may focus on getting things rounded but if I'm aiming to increase a particular skill on the level up then I won't care at all. I'm leaning more towards the latter in FNV where I was much more the former in FO3.

I always do that... Its a hold over from when bumping a skill from 21 to 25 would actually change your chances from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4.

I do the opposite, I increase the skills I care about as much as possible, no matter whether they are even or not. But for the skills I don't care about I do it. If I've got 27 in medicine I'll go ahead and bump it up to 30 just in case there's a 30 point skill check for medicine, even though I don't care about medicine.

I do the same thing. I bugs me when I have to put points into something and it comes out to be something other than a number that ends with 0 or 5.

Yeah, I have that same problem. Never did it in New Vegas though, because I used skill points on skills I was focusing in. However, in DAO, I would always use cheats to get all my attributes to 20.

Yea I had the same issue with it. Then I realize drugs could even them out to the require skill checks so I left it at that. Sometimes I have a residual single point which made a skill point odd. But it was a marker to keep improving the singled skill.

I never had that type of compulsive instinct on skill points, but for guns yes.
I always have to repair it. Constantly.

If my gun is just the slightest bit down in condition, it's automatically repaired with a repair kit. I can't help but making sure all my guns are in top condition.

I don't have this problem. Sometimes I'll distribute points between useful skills to make them into multiples of five. For instance, instead of having guns at 72 and lockpick at 53, I will bump guns to 75 and lower lockpick to 50. However, I never add points to skills I don't use simply to make the numbers orderly.

I'm obsessive in other ways though. You should see me in Sim City. It's always the densest zoning and the best buildings of each type. I absolutely hate building something, and then having to go back to destroy it, in order to build something better. That's why I can't play RTS games either. I always want to build the best turret, even if it means suffering huge losses while I build up the resources to create it.

I'd rather increase as many skills as possible. I usually try to get two points into as many skills as I can. The skills I rely on the most are given three or four points as often as I can afford to put that many points in one skill. Guns, repair, sneak, speech, and barter take precedence over the others. It takes a little longer this way but I usually have a high enough score in different skills to succeed in conversations.

Sometimes I wish I could snag a couple of points from the skills I never use to pad the ones that I do use.

That's actually a bad compulsion. Since implants and attire boost your skills, putting them at round numbers is usually a waste of points. Unless you mean having skill points rounded outside of the level up screen and in your overall.

I too have this problem. I went so far as to design a build that will, by level 30, have an even 80 points in every skill save Speech and Barter which will have 70 in each skill. I just like knowing that if my main method of success is not possible, that I have options, and that they don't necessarily svck.
