Hi, been playing Morrowind GOTY and Oblivion, you didnt have to be online playing those games and they worked just fine. It seems the only reason for being online in Skyrim is so Steam can spam you with those (censored) commercials about games to buy. I am fed up with those ads by now and I wonder, how do I play Skyrim offline, a step by step information would be appreciated.

Play steam in offline mode? Not quite sure how it all works to be honest, but if I recall correctly, there's an option to play in offline mode.

You don't have to be online to play Skyrim. The only time I have Steam in online mode is when I know there's a patch or other stuff I need to download.

Open Steam, do not start any games, in one of the drop down menus from the tabs along the top of the Steam window there should an option to go offline. Choose it and Steam will restart in offline mode. It should stay that way until you tell it to go online again. Works for me, anyway. When Steam starts up I get a pop-up reminding me that it's offline and I just tell it to stay that way.

You are only required to be connected to Steamworks for validating, patching and acquiring DLC. Other than that, the game can be played in Offline Mode.

In addition, you can disable advertising. Click on 'steam' in the upper left corner, go to settings->interface, uncheck the 'notify me about additions' checkbox.
