PC-only games I must have

Post » Fri Jul 29, 2011 8:31 pm

So tomorrow I'm putting together my first ever gaming PC. Assuming zero explosions and only minor electrocutions I should be up and running by lunchtime. I need to know your top recommendations for PC-only titles in any genre apart from RTS (I hate RTS) to get me started. That includes games which are on PC now but which might be ported to consoles later. I already have WoW. EVE is a no-no. I'm not interested in old games from the early 2000s and beyond, although I could make an exception for Diablo 2. If you want you could include titles which are on console but which are a million times better on PC thanks to mods and other stuff (Oblivion and Morrowind for example).

:thanks:

Deus Ex. It's an old game, but it's still the best PC game ever in my opinion. :)

Why is EVE a no?

Battlefield 3 isn't PC-only, but it might as well be. I can assure you it's awesome. Granted it isn't out until November, but still.

Why not open to older games? Neverwinter Nights is a great game if you can find some good modules for it, and there are quite a few out there. Baldur's Gate 1&2 are good as well. Also The Sims 1, 2 or 3 would be a good choice for some fun.

Simcity 4 is one of my favorite games ever, but since it's from 2003 I shouldn't be mentioning it should I.

Oh, and of course Crysis.

The Witcher Series.

Never played the Witcher, myself. But from what I know The Witcher 1 actually uses a highly modified version of the engine that Neverwinter Nights used.

Anyway, the Far Cry games on PC are quite a bit different from the console versions up to, and including, some plot differences. Dragon Age: Origins is much better on PC in my opinion, plus it has mods.

I kinda miss all the weird faces of that strange looking fellow that was your avatar.

I cba paying £14.99 a month on top of a WoW sub.

I totally forgot about NWN. Should I get the 1st or 2nd one? NWN 2 has a bad score on Amazon compared to the 1st.

I forgot about this too. Am buying this right now

I like both, but, to be honest, I can't even tell you how the first one is like. I've never actually played it. Not the campaign that ships with the game, that is. I have been playing modules exclusively since I bought the game.

On that note: Neverwinter Nights 1 has many more modules then Neverwinter Nights 2.

Tried to buy a hard copy of Amnesia Dark Descent but I can't find one. Is there a way of buying this in the UK without Steam?

X3: Terran Conflict is absolutely amazing. It is a very slow paced game though, so if you are looking for space action right out of the box you will be disappointed. Amazing trading sim though.

You can't go wrong with The Orange Box, every game in there is a masterpiece.

If you pick up The Orange Box, be sure to pick up Garry's Mod if you like building/creative games.

I didn't know that they made hard copies of Amnesia.

But speaking of Steam: Half-Life. Good game. It and it's sequel. Also, Minecraft. Oh, and TF2 on the PC is so much different from the console version at this point that they may as well be different games.

I don't know about the UK, but here in the US I got a copy at WalMart. Maybe try Amazon? I quickly shipped it to a relatives house as I didn't actually like it.

I'd put in a vote for Mount&Blade.

Of course you should make an exception for Diablo 2 it is only the most addicting game ever made.

Starcraft Brood War or SC2,

Fallout(Not the originals since that is not what you are into but I still recommend), Fallout 3 and New Vegas

Nox

Red Alert 1 and 2

Command and Conquer Tiberiun Sun, FireStorm, Generals, Red Alert, ect. The new games for this series blow.

Age of Empires... uhh

I don't really know, most of the good PC games were the "old ones". :sadvaultboy:

He said no RTSs and the newer Fallout games are anything but PC exclusive. Of course, given the Bethesda aspect of them, there are a whole ton of mods to choose from.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series (lots of mods available to improve the graphics, etc) - and they're currently very cheap in the U.K!

If you're into simulations, there are shed loads from planes to trains, including trucks, buses, John Deere Tractors, cranes, roadworks, mining and tunnelling (I didn't realise there were quite so many - I'm finding these on Amazon.co.uk!), tanks, diggers, farms, ships, boats, submarines, space shuttle, tow truck, demolition, helicopters ...

Am I the only one who wasn't impressed by Deus Ex? It felt dated and was generally not much fun. I can't remember any specifics, but after the first couple missions I uninstalled it.

I'd say the Orange Box is a must have.

Minecraft of course.

Plus Battlefield 2, Crysis, Team Fortress 2 (not PC exclusive, but might as well be) and I would say Age of Empires 2, but you said no RTS's (TBH I'm not a big fan of the genre either, but AoE is one of my favorite games of all time).

Some of these have been named already, but i'll list them anyway for further emphasis:

Oblivion
Morrowind
Daggerfall
Nehrim: At Fate's Edge
Deus Ex
The Total War series (turn-based, not RTS)
Mount and Blade: Warband
Gothic I and II
Baldur's Gate I and II
X3: Terran Conflict (although there's a new one out soon, so you might just want to wait for that)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent

NWN is good, I liked the original campaigns, I'm actually one of the only people who did. Didn't really play the modules for it. Tried playing NWN 2 but my PC couldn't handle it. I have a new PC now (almost 2 yrs now!) but I still haven't tried to play NWN 2 again. It's more linear than the first and I think less fun overall.

The Witcher is pretty good I hear, I wanna play that sometime. Maybe when I get my new graphics card.

Diablo 2 like you said, the vanilla game and with the mod Median XL. Both are fun.

Vampire Bloodlines is a good game too, I've played through it a couple of times and it's pretty fun.

If you like Sim's games, Sim's Medieval is fun too..but I haven't been able to get into it really because it makes my GPU run too hot. Of course that's when it had a major dust bunny issue and it might run better now.

I have Baldur's Gate 2 but I haven't played it much because I don't find it all that fun..but maybe that's not my type of RPG. I also have Titan Quest but that doesn't even work on my computer, so I haven't been able to play any of that.

Also you might wanna check out Lord of the Rings Online and maybe Dungeons and Dragon's Online if you haven't, since you can play them for free. Guild Wars too if you haven't, that's some what fun and free to play online.
