Same thing as the base game, theyre making it a steam exclusive, and even if we paid for the product we'll have to crack it if we refuse to have that malware on our systems.

There will be an external download on the site for the CK just like the G.E.C.K. You don't have to grab it through Steam (But question isn't, why wouldn't you want to?)

The CK is only available to download off Steam, it requires it to run.

However Steamworks integration is optional. You can still upload mods to other sites.

Are you sure about it?
With the GECK it was the case, but I haven't seen it confirmed for the CK.

Oh, right. Forgot the Steam works integration. I guess you won't be able to externally grab it.

No, both the game and the editor require Steam.

Please forgive me if I should have started a new topic for this, but I try to make use of existing topics that have to do with my question when possible. I wasn't sure if this was too old a topic on which to attach my questions.

Anyway, I am trying to make sure I understand the Steam/CK buisness. I apologize if I seem to be slow. I have not created any mods, yet, but am wanting to for Skyrim. Now, if I understand correctly, I can't do that.

I bought a copy of Skyrim for $59 US a few months ago. Was excited when news of the CK hit, because, having come up with some unique ideas, I decided I would give modding a try. However, and here is the part I need to confirm, it looks like I won't be modding this game.

Can anyone tell me whether or not any of the following is correct?:

Only people who purchased their copy of Skyrim through Steam can download the CK;

or,

You don't have to have a Steam copy, but you do have to register at the Steam website to download it;

and/or,

You have to install a Steam program on your PC in order to use the CK.

I don't want to use Steam; there is no reason for me to use it. I purchased a retail copy of the game, I download mods from PES or Nexus, I use only Wrye Smash and BOSS (because, really, what else do you need?), and I don't want Steam (nor anyone else) to force updates nor mess with times/load order, etc. Personal preference.

I know I am something of a dinosaur in my views, but even if I felt otherwise, how am I supposed to use Steam when I already have a retail version of Skyrim? Buy another copy, via Steam, use my current copy for a door stop, and submit to Steam's way of doing things? If the CK is only available to those with a Steam copy of Skyrim, then why was there a retail version at all?

Please forgive me, again; I realize this has morphed into a rant, from simply asking questions, but I am incredibly frustrated. I guess I can just learn modding using Oblivion - nothing wrong with that - but I wanted very much to do something with Skyrim.

Am I just out of luck?

I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this poorly-worded quasi-rant of a post. I haven't really been able to get accurate information anywhere, and I have been Googling and reading for a few days. Perhaps I just looked in the wrong places initially, but I figure if there is anywhere I can get some solid info, it is here.

Thank you.

Do you not have to register retail copies of Skyrim with Steam? I'm sure I've seen that said here before.

Regardless of however you own Skyrim, the Creation Kit is only available through Steam.

One with a retail copy does have to register with and install Steam, unfortunately.

You do.

If you own a copy of Skyrim for PC, it must be registered to a Steam account to verify so you can use it. So either you already have Steam, or you're lying to us. (Or I am unaware of a way to purchase Skyrim without it requiring Steam DRM)

Mind if I ask; what country do you live in and what language of the game do you own? As far as I know, all PC copies of the game require Steam to run.

And yes, the CK is also only available through Steam, which shouldn't be an issue, because Skyrim requires it. >.>

You CANNOT install skyrim without installing steam before, steam activation is needed for the installation and the game launch. So... i suppose you have steam. :)

Now I am really confused....No, I don't have Steam. I have never used it, nor would I use it. I bought my copy for $59 - which was painful enough - and had never even heard of Steam until I started trolling for mods. So, idk.

Oh hell...I think I have an idea what's going on. I think I have to murder someone now.*

*Gross exaggeration...I wouldn't murder anyone. Just covering my @$$.

I am in the US, and I bought the game from a local gaming shop. I think I have to go have a talk with them, however; I fear I might have inadvertently purchased a bootleg. JFC, I thought I was smarter than that!

It looks as though I will soon have a Steam copy after all - I don't like the other option, not a bit - and will then have the CK, no problems. Someone else, though, close to me, is about to have a problem. Count on that...

EDIT:

@ Alexander J. Velicky: Please, no, I am not lying to you. I just think I got played, and I will deal with that.

Thank you, all, for replying - and so quickly - to my questions. I appreciate it very much.

You sure you didn't just install it and not realize it? I'm not sure if you need the full version of steam to run skyrim, or if it just installs some mini version for registration

Well since you have to create a steam account to use steam, I'd be wondering how he could have installed it without knowing...maybe he's used Portal or HL2 and just didn't remember that he has it installed?

Malware? Odd...Malwarebytes doesn't object to Steam...

Do you actually need to have a steam account? I had one so I put it onto mine, but I wouldn't be surprised if I could have installed it without steam. What about people who want to play Skyrim without the internet? They wouldn't be able to install if it needed steam and an account. I remember when I installed the game it had a steam looking installer, but as I was saying, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't require a full steam install or an account.

It requires both. The executable has a Steam wrapper on it that launched it through Steam no matter what.

Also, no internet, no Skyrim. But nowadays, and since (at least in the US) like 99% of people have some form of access to the internet, most of that being through home or phone, it's a safe bet to say most people can activate Skyrim to play it.

@Xtynct, Redwood Elf: No, I didn't unknowingly DL Steam, but I can see how something like that might happen, I suppose. I am extremely particular about what I put on - or allow on - my PC. I didn't even know about Steam until I started poking around in the mod downloads at Nexus. Kept seeing mention of it, then the CK came out and I got confused.

No Portal, no HL2...I don't have money for games, usually. Hell, I didn't have money for Skyrim, but I made room (read "cut corners severely for two months"). Now, though, I have a situation I need to rectify, as I am more and more certain, as I ponder it, that I was sold an illegitimate copy of the game...how else could I play it without Steam?

Of course I am assuming that I know what happened, but what other explanation is there?

I must seem like some kind of exaggerated idiot to you all. I have been playing games since Pong, if you want to get technical about it (yeah, I am an old woman). I should have known. The copy of Skyrim that I have - the packaging, the DVD, everything - looks so legit, though. Could have fooled me. Oh wait, it did.

I think I will go back to purchasing the rare games I do at major retailers. Again, thanks for your help.
