Only utilizing 30% GPU?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:27 pm

This game is running horribly. When using the on-screen display options in MSI afterburner, I discovered that the GPu is only 30% utilized.

I run a GTX 460, and the utilization of the GPU never cracks 30%. Something is very wrong there. Naturally I don't even get 30 FPS and I have a nice gaming computer.

Why on earth is this game not using more than 30% on my GTX 460?

This game is unplayable right now, and I waited 2 months with it on preorder for nothing.

This is a real problem you are reporting, but this sentence makes no sense unfortunately.

AND YES, THE GAME DOES SEEM TO USE ONLY A FRACTION OF THE VIDEO CARD'S POWER.

Ok I fixed it... I didn't think the sentece was too difficult to understand...

Only using a fraction of the cards power doesn't make sense. You state it (yell it...) as if thats the most normal thing in the world for a game to not utilize the GPU fully... thats not normal at all.

What makes it even worse is that I didnt have any of these problems in fallout 3 or oblivion, and they are using the same engine. How do you screw up this bad by just reusing the same engine...

Anyways, anyone else having this issue? I have heard it mentioned on gamefaqs forums, but nothing is going to change by posting on that forum.

I'll repeat what I said elsewhere here. (Pretty much.)

My crossfired 5870s hit an all time high of 35% on 1 card, 0% on the other. Though both cards fire up into 3D mode. (Read: Max clock speeds.)

It's time to retire the Gambryo engine and get something a bit more modern!

Well I am having problems with my Radeon 5770, but I'm not sure if we're talking about the same problem. My frame rate seems more or less fine when there are no human NPCs or enemies on screen, but once I look at a live human NPC or enemy, my frame rate drops terribly. It happens with ED-E as well, even though he's not human, but no scorpions or anything else. Groups of enemies or groups of NPCs in towns slows me to under 10 FPS.

You're describing what seems to be the most common problem for almost everyone at this point (nvidia people anyways).

I am speaking of something else, although I also have the human NPC FPS drop issue...

Never does this game use more than 30% of my video card's GPU. Both of these are signifcant issues however, did not occur in Fallout 3, and are completely game-breaking.

Same here, 280GTX single card, it never gets above 45, it's mostly in the 20's.

To have both problems would drive me insane. Sounds unplayable. At least I get decent FPS when not dealing with humans. If I had to put up with framerates like that all the time I'd probably just quit and wait for a patch.

These things wouldn't bug me as much if I wasn't looking forward to the game for so long.

Yes it is competely unplayable, I tried fighting the surveyor guy just to check FPS, it drops to 8-16 FPS during the fight. On a GTX 460, Phenom II x4 955 3.8Ghz... nice.

This is so appalling. I have had the game preordered for months...

Theres times where it's utilizing so little GPU power, my card actually downclocks for 405mhz instead of my 870mhz OC (which is stable in OCCT, Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, etc...).

Something is seriously borked. Clearly this game wasn't tested at all, nice way to stick it to your loyal fan base and paying customers.

I'm in the same boat as you. My specs are in my sig, and honestly, I run Crysis on enthusiast settings on max resolution MUCH better than I run this game. It's a shame really.

I'm in the same boat as you. My specs are in my sig, and honestly, I run Crysis on enthusiast settings on max resolution MUCH better than I run this game. It's a shame really.

Its not even that the game doesn't run optimized or something like that. And its worse than a shame.

I just fiddled with settings to get an even bigger picture:

1.) On "Low" settings, with every graphics option set to low or off, I still get 15 FPS when i shoot at any NPC.
2.) On "Ultra High" is EXACTLY the same story, 15 FPS when i shoot at an NPC.
3.) Even weirder is that the GPU never cracks 30% utilization EVER, and is usually hovering around 14% for me.
4.) EVEN WEIRDER STILL, My Video card continuously is downclocking (from stock 725mhz to 405mhz) while the game is running. is it not because my OC is unstable. I have tried running the game on default video card clocks and it still downlcoks the game. Something is horribly wrong.

AMD Phenom II x4 940 (OC'd to 3.5ghz)
Radeon 5850 OC'd to 840/1300
8GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 @ 5-5-5-15

GPU usage never goes above 30% here. NPC lag issues, etc etc. What a mess.

Do you get the downclocking issue though? since we have the same problems i wonder if you can add that to your list also. It's a complete mess.

Someone created a sign here if you have this problem thread here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122958-sign-here-if-you-have-the-npc-lag-issue/

Maybe that will get more attention. Sign there and post specs I guess.

Same problem. Just ran Fallout 3 NV in windowed mode so I could keep an eye on my video card usage. Rarely got over 30%

Turn of vsync for starters. That would limit your game to 60fps most likely. Even though the graphics settings can be turned up higher, this game was designed for an xbox 360/ps3, which have far less power than a recent graphics card...
