Does the game continue after the main quest line or stop pre expansion as FO3 did?

It stops. But warns you ahead of time so you don't get stuck in a room.

So you can "leave" and do other things?

You are warned beforehand (I don't know how, but have been told by varying sources), so you can simply stop going down that quest path, and make a save to do all your other stuff with.
