On Opinions

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 4:25 pm

I was reading through a thread that was loaded with opinions posturing as objective facts and I got to thinking about Dirty Harry: "Opinions are like @ssholes, everybody's got one". I was thinking how that one-liner was actually kind of lame and really more of an excuse to show off Dirty Harry's absurd and crass nature... and also an excuse to throw in a curse word in an 80s flick. But then I started reflecting deeper on this wise maxim. It has several layers you see. First, the character who gave us the maxim was named Dirty [Hairy]. It couldn't fit any better. But, one thing @ssholes all have in common is that they stink. They are portals for excrement and toxic gases. They are the last place on earth that you'd want to touch with your bare hands. They are unsanitary. Is that what Dirty Harry was actually implying? And wasn't that just is opinion anyway?

I've heard the phrase before but I can't say I looked that much into it's possible hidden meaning. Interesting.

As long as people don't mind other people having their own opinion all is good. Opinions that go against facts can be an issue - No, the earth is not flat. Then there are those that just want to make an argument because it makes them feel smarter - No, the sky is not blue, it's Periwinkle. Those kinds you just have to let them rant and move on.

Well, if i remember well that Clint "original joke" was about "the balls" not asses... :biggrin: from "Magnum Force". He has re-interpreted it in a more non-sixist way in that '80s movie form the series.

However, i can assure you that someone like even "to mess" with those things above mentioned ... :tongue:

I think that the only thing that this statement implies is that opinions are useless and unworthy to be shared at the end,'cause every human being remain with his own beliefs.

p.s. i've used already the "balls quotation " from Magnum Force in the past here -and not accidentally

Perhaps asking a moderator to move this to the dedicated section would have been more constructive,don't you agree ?

it's possible to make a mistake and open a topic in the wrong section :wink:

I don't want it moved. I'm just saying that's where it will be heading in the near future.

Read a link before type with your fingers on your keyboard next time...

"For off-topic discussion not related to games published by Bethesda Softworks."

@the plebeian

i suggest you to ask to a moderator to move this discussion to the section above if you don't want it to be closed :wink: we are all wrong to discuss such argument here,in the hurry i've not noticed immediately sadly.

I disagree, this isn't a lame one liner, I'd laugh if someone dropped that into a conversation... Besides isn't he merely pointing out that everyone is entitled to one? Freedom of speech blah blah blah.
