My oppinion of the PC UI and what I would like it to be.

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:46 am

The way this game plays is not like most pc games out there, using arrow keys to move and hot key spells to keyboard numbers/letters and having a targeting system. Most of the intuitive hot key pc game standards are not used (m for map b for bag t for target closest mob)
I am VERY displeased with the movement. moving around the game sound not require me to use the mouse. Trying to turn with the mouse tends to make me "sea sick". targeting, i have to put the cross hairs in the direction of whatever is hitting me and hope that my spell/melee swing hits. The way you do spells/melee is awful due to the cumbersome way of trying to cast or melee on top of no targeting system. trying to move back or turn while clicking the mouse and trying to get the cross hairs in the direction of whats hitting you is awful.

Please Put a basic UI like most of the RPG or MMORPG's out there.
Targeting: I would greatly enjoy a targeting system, either hot key to target nearest enemy or click target. Tabbing to switch targets would be wonderful also.

Inventory: Sortable, bag slots where you can see what you have and not this funky list you can only see half of (scroll does not always work btw) a character screen where you can see what your toon is wearing.

Keyboard hot keys/ui: have spells or melee hot keyed to the keyboard not the mouse, with the addition of the cast bar.

Movement: This frustrates me the most. I would like to move left or right on my keyboard.

Camera angle: put an option in to keep the camera angle in One spot.

Killing a mob "kill video": Make it an option to turn this off. yea i know i killed the mob, i don't need another angle on it let me target the next and keep moving.

It would greatly improve your sales of this game and you wont have your pc players complaining about the "consolising" of a pc game. As it stands I tell all who ask about this game to NOT buy it that it is a cumbersome way to play on the pc. I will even go as far as inviting people to try the game on my pc. Because of the experience of the horrific ui they will not buy the game.

Please fix the UI so PC gamers can enjoy this game.

Thank you,
Vynlora

Still the controls are awkward at best.

You can also set numbers 1-8 to spells or inventory items . (e.g. Sword, armor) in the favorites menu.... Just set a spell or item to favorites and in the favorites menu highlight it and press the desired number.... On my mage I bind all my good spells to 1-8 and it works out great... a bit awkward compared to an MMO but much better then sifting through menus mid combat.

Oblivions UI is 1000x better than Skyrims IMO, Even better still with BT Mod and elven map redux....Skyrims UI is horrible and ugly and whoever decided it was a good UI should be sacked..

SkyUI is also horrible and ugly but still considerably better than Bethesdas effort.

i have tried to bind the keys but they come unbound, or it will repeat that i cannot unbind the key bind.

I agree that SkyUI is horrible and ugly and does little to alleviate the frustration. If i could return this game i would.

Sounds kind of like you think the word RPG means "like WoW". The actual interface in Skyrim is trash but SkyUI is amazing at fixing that. As far as the play style of the game....well have you ever played an Elder Scrolls game?

Buy the game for a console?

Seriously though, if you just moved left and right with the keyboard, how could you possibly function in a 3D environment? What about looking up and down? Do you want separate keys for that too?

I agree that the UI could use some tweeks, but come on, son.

I agree with you about the UI. It was designed for console controlers and they should have remade it for mouse and keyboard instead of making the minimum changes just to be compatible with PC controlers. But about asking for an auto-targeting, I couldn't disagree more.

Sorry impulse "son" not quite.... but as far as panning up and down ... I typically use 3rd person view, and use page up and page down.

I agree with you. And I disagree.

The inventory/bag system is terrible. SkyUI improves it a lot. But even then, it's still not good. I agree that bag-system like we see in MMOs would be a lot better. Morrowind had such a system. I loved that. I don't understand why we can't have it in Skyrim too. (Ok, because of controles on consoles probably). in Skyrim, the GUI is build with special software, not with the Construction kit. So it seems hard to redo the GUI.

The keybinds and favorites system is also rubbish. Lots of bugs. But also the basic design is a pita. If you change certain keybinds (F, T, tab) other functionality stops working. I had changed all my keybinds. I couldn't recharge my enchants. I couldn't rename enchanted items. I couldn't use tab to get back in the menu-structure. It was terrible. Clicking "reset" didn't work. When I reinstalled my game at some point, I never touched the keybinds, and now stuff kinda works as it should. Which is still not good.

I agree with you, OP. Skryim should have a system with actionbars. Put any action, spell or item in an actionbar slot. Bind any key you want to any actionbar slot. Just like MMOs do. That would make keybinds so much easier. I do think actionbars themselves should be hidden. And only show themselves during configuration mode. I love how minimalistic the GUI is during regular gameplay.

I disagree about the targeting system. I like how Skyrim does it now. I really dislike the "targetting" of enemies. Having a big colored circle underneath them. Again, I love minimalistic GUIs. I play a melee character, without a bow even. Yes, aiming at an enemy might not be easy. But still I think it's more fun than the auto-aimbotting of MMOs. But if you want a "tab" auto-target key, I think that should be doable. It should just make your character turn towards an enemy. And hitting it again should turn you to the next.

About movement and aiming. I think you should just get used to it. It will take a while. But everybody can learn it. I'm an old guy. :) I started playing games (in the nineties) when I was already older than most people on these forums. Still I could learn it. (I must say, I play with a trackball and keyboard. Done that for years. Even played FPS games with that setup. Because I find a joystick (with lots of buttons) much more convenient than a keyboard). Skyrim could add keys for turning. But then, you still have to move your aim up and down. So you would need 4 extra buttons just for aiming. I think if you got what you asked for, you might not like it as much as you think.

You ask for spells/action to not be bound to the mouse. I assume you mean: using your right hand and left hand ? Those can be bound to other keys. I use Y for right hand, and left-mouse for left-hand. It works. I haven't had any problems with it. I assume you will be able to rebind both functions if you want. Try it.

If you get seasick by turning with the mouse, try changing your mouse settings. In game, and in the control panel. Slow down reaction speed of your mouse. Turn of acceleration in the game, see if it helps. Personally I prefer a trackball (Logitech Marblemouse, it's symmetrical, so it works in the left-hand too).

But reality is: Bethesda will not change any of this. They made these design decisions years ago. They stuck with it. They think this is best for their average customer. Even if they come to realize they were wrong, they will not change it. Just because Bethesda never changes anything after release. We are already surprised and happy they did fix quite a few things in the last months. Personally I hadn't expected them to release a patch with the compiler-settings-optimization. It amazed me they acknowledged they messed up big time there, and fixed it. But they will never come back and change major design decisions, like their GUI. If you want something changed, you have to rely on user-made mods, on tweaking your own PC, and use your own wits to get an acceptable GUI. Sorry.
